Beleaguered Gateway to ditch consumer electronics to focus on PC box assembly

“Gateway’s newest gamble will be to ditch consumer electronics and focus on its original offering, PCs, according to The Wall Street Journal. This represents yet another shift in direction for the company, seeing how it recently shuttered its retail stores, getting together with retailers such as Best Buy and CompUSA,” Alyce Lomax reports for The Motley Fool. But, it won’t be easy, Loxan reports, “Gateway is struggling to steal market share from other PC heavyweights such as Dell and Hewlett-Packard. There’s even Apple’s loyal following to contend with, and what no longer seems like such a far-fetched possibility — that the popularity of the iPod could excite sales of Macintosh computer products.”

“This gamble of Gateway’s may, of course, pan out as the company struggles for a turnaround.

  1. Sigh. I remember back in the days when “Beleaguered” was only used in front of “Apple” in headlines. Gosh, there’s been a lot of tonic water under the bridge since then…

Maybe Gateway should just change their name to “Dell Lite”? Saves consumer confusion.

  2. Er.. jeez.. what a lame news item..

    I mean.. yeah, it’s funny..

but.. yawn.. Dell’s barely making a profit on those low low end $500 PC’s.. they make great money in the Enterprise market…

    Gateway.. yawn..

  3. Dell stinks, Gateway stinks. I have to fix Dells at work. It’s a joke. Their “customer service” lines always hang up on me and their equipment is garbage.

I’d NEVER pay money for a gateway or a dell.

  4. RIP Gateway.

With this business strategy they are gonna be dead and buried in 5 years.

There is too much competition in the pc market – what do they offer that’s better than Dull or HP?

    NOTHING!
