10 ways Apple’s iPhone beats out the Mac
Monday, February 16, 2009 - 11:46 AM EST

"Apple's iPhone beats out a desktop computer in some important areas for me. I've even gotten into the habit of grabbing my iPhone instead of jumping onto my computer for various tasks," Seth Weintraub writes for Computerworld.

Here are 10 things I'd rather do on an iPhone than my desktop:

1. Weather
2. GPS Maps
3. SMS and Phone
4. Facebook
5. Music
6. Checking Email
7. Contacts/Addressbook
8. Gaming
9. Notes
10. Twitter

Evidently he doesn't have a very good desktop. If he prefer the slower and smaller keyboard of the iPhone. If both are sitting side by side I go to my MacPro first.

I can certainly see why you'd want to see the weather on your iPhone - is this rain going to turn to sleet or snow? And GPS is pretty much useless on a Mac Pro or iMac, seriously!
Now we get to "phone". My wife has recently discovered iChat A/V. From Newton, MA to Brighton, England and to some suburb of Edinburg, Scotland. Face sharing and desktop sharing ... you can't do that with an iPhone. ... more stuff ... then Gaming! Can you play Warcraft on an iPhone? Would you WANT to?
Finally, #10 ... Twit. No, that's all you need. Twit!

Ummm.....how about.....making a phone call?!?!?

Yes, almost all of that list. But, also, near the top is the calendar app. with it's alarms to keep me on schedule and then photos.

When can I run Photoshop on my iPhone???

Feb 16, 09 - 12:35 pm Comment from: alansky

I love my iPhone, and I do reach for it first sometimes. But an iPhone is not a substitute for a desktop computer. Period. As for preferring to take notes on the iPhone... that's laughable! And the Calendar app can only set alarms up to the event time. And the screen is so small that browsing websites with Safari is a very slow process unless you're visiting a site designed specifically for mobile phones. I really do love my iPhone. But better than a Mac? Pul-leaze!!!

Radius, there are image editing apps for the iPhone/Touch.. not photoshop... but good for what they are.

Feb 16, 09 - 12:39 pm Comment from: Jay

The previous posters are idiots. This guy is simply saying that there are common everyday tasks that he now turns to his iPhone for instead of firing up his computer. He is not saying his iPhone is better for Photoshop... you moron.

I agree with the writer. I will sometimes go days without going to my Mac for checking E-mail and the Facebook App for the iPhone is a much better user experience than opening Safari and going that route. I never go to Mapquest anymore, I use the iPhone Maps App. Notes, Weather and Music are the same.

This is a great little post to get people talking about how they don't use their computers as much now thanks to the awesome power and functionality of the iPhone.

Radius "When can I run Photoshop on my iPhone???"

As soon as Adobe gets Flash running natively on the iPhone, they'll work on a custom installer App that replaces Mobile Safari with Opera and installs Photoshop.

You'll of course have to buy it in a bundle with the entire Adobe Mobile Creative Suite CS™.

I will NOT buy an iPhone until it can run Aperture on it. I expect Apple will update the iPhone to run this program by next month. I need to process around 10,000 photos/month and using the iPhone to do that will help me be more productive at my job. It is a veritable crime that Aperture has not been included on all iPhones sold so far. Come on Apple!!

I rather use my Mac for Facebook

Actually there are some really great phone apps for the Mac. Try PhoneValet for example. This is an incredibly powerful phone system that offers all kinds of features...especially when it comes to voicemail and call recording.

Not to mention there are things like Skype or iChat AV.

Like everything else, the iPhone may be a better experience because it fits in your pocket and works almost anywhere, but that portability comes at a price in terms of power, speed and ease of use, as compared to using a Mac desktop or laptop.

What we love about the iPhone is that all of these features and apps work well, and are well designed to maximize functionality in a portable device.

For a lot of people who don't have heavy duty email needs for example, checking email on an iPhone is going to be a much better experience than the user who sees checking email on their computer as a process of turning it on first, logging in, launching their email client, and finding that they have a handful of actual emails a week. On the other hand, if you sit behind your computer most of the day, have numerous email accounts, receive hundreds of emails a day, and use your email client for notes, schedules, tasks, and so forth, you'll find that the iPhone is a great device for allowing you to check your email when you're away from your computer.

Feb 16, 09 - 01:33 pm Comment from: Eh?

Who are these douchebags demanding photoshop and aperture on the iPhone? Don't hold your breath, the iPhone doesn't have the stones to run these apps right now. Or, maybe you should hold your breath, then the rest of us could be spared your ridiculous comments.

Feb 16, 09 - 01:52 pm Comment from: TheConfuzed1

Although I do not believe the iPhone to be a replacement for a computer, I definitely do find myself using my computer a lot less than I did pre-iPhone.

Read the posts again and then look up the word 'irony' in your dictionary...

and then grow up!

Checking Email?

Pffft. Ever try to look inside a 2 Mb attachment on an iPhone?

Checking email without being able to reply using copy/paste is nothing more than a tease.

Get real.

Notes? Again, copy/paste.

What a useless blog entry.

Make no mistake. Aperture on the iPhone is the next big thing coming. The market will not stand for an iPhone that cannot run Aperture or Photoshop CS4. Apple certainly will not get a sale from me until they can run these very important programs.

Searching APP store is a hell of a lot easier on iphone than on itunes. Or safari.

Nothing against the iPhone, but I use my desktop iMac more than 10 ways.

Feb 17, 09 - 06:54 am Comment from: Andrew

I can't see why they can't build phone capabilities into a mac laptop. Probably never use it (like wireless or blue tooth if you don't have any w/bt devices) but handy if you're out and get a chance to use it in a practicle real world sense.

I think having the internet in your pocket is the best feature. The iPhone does this better than any other mobile device. It won't replace my desktop or my laptop, but having a usable mobile internet is the "killer app" for me.
