Report: New York City Apple Stores sold out of iPhones
Tuesday, March 25, 2008 - 04:13 PM EDT

"New York may now have three Apple stores, but there's not a single iPhone among them," Danny Shea reports for The Huffington Post.

"Apple Store employees at all three New York locations — the original SoHo store, the 59th Street location, and the most recent addition, on West 14th Street — have confirmed that each store is sold out of iPhones, and they don't know when they'll be getting new ones," Shea reports.

Full (brief) article here.

MacDailyNews Note: We can confirm (via iPhone, no less) that each of the three NYC stores are reporting "currently sold out." The iPhone is still available at AT&T Stores in and around Manhattan.

MDN - Thank you for making the distinction in your headlines that it was New York City stores that are sold out.

Peace.

Mar 25, 08 - 04:27 pm Comment from: silverhawk

I guess we here in the Twin Cities (Minneapolis/St. Paul and surrounding suburbs) are really important because we have four Apple Stores!

Mar 25, 08 - 04:31 pm Comment from: Macromancer

I can't wait for the 3g phone to come out so that people will realize it's not all it's cracked up to be and people will STFU about it finally.

Mar 25, 08 - 04:33 pm Comment from: iWill

Reminds me of the time last October at the 5th Av NYC store when I saw people lined up to buy iPhone and iTouch. It was lunch hour and the line up to the little folding table was 12 deep for an entire hour. The Apple folks were swiping credit cards and selling these two gadgets as fast as, well, hot-cakes!

It literally blew my mind to see this unparalleled rate of consumption. I knew then that this was no phenomenon, it was an industry being born before my eyes. And yes, I wept tears of joy at this prophetic sight.

So at that rate, how come they just ran out of iPhone/iTouch now? Emptying product channels maybe? Hmmm....
Stay tuned!

Mar 25, 08 - 04:33 pm Comment from: TowerTone

Even the Apple Store takes 5-7 business days to ship an iPhone? This could be good news.

On another note, I have been to three different Best Buy stores and noticed that none have the TV. It is not even available through their web store. This has been going on for a month. One employee told me they are waiting for the next generation, due by June. (And yes, I had an entire shaker full of salt with me....)

Zillions of tourists devouring everything in sight!

Word of the SDK and impending third party iPhone apps have people salivating.

With the dollar's value down the tubes and iPhone cracks so easily got... wouldn't you get one too?!

Mar 25, 08 - 04:37 pm Comment from: sfstevelong

I went to the Stonestown, San Francisco store several times to buy a 16 gig and was told that none of the stores had them. I went back several days in a row (around 10 March). I finally ordered it through the online store on the 13th. It didn't ship until the 20th and I finally got it yesterday. There seems to be a lot of demand for the 16 gig. The ATT stores have the 8 gig (my brother just got his recently).

Mar 25, 08 - 04:41 pm Comment from: Mad Mac Maniac

No iPhone for me!!!

I love Apple but are people stupid or something?

3G IS THE SH*T!!, it's lightning FAST. I know I tried it on a LAPTOP, yes A LAPTOP!!

Storage on current iPhones is a frigging JOKE!!

The camera is nearly about worthless unless it's 8MP or better.

GPS, where the FSCK IS THE GPS???

Zooming the iphone screen is another joke, WHOOPS hit a link by accident? Got to wait until the page loads and then go back and then try again.

All over the SLOW ASS Edge network!!!

The iPhone is sold out in NYC because Apple keeps supply short as to generate BUZZ!!!

It's a old tactic, but the masses are waiting for the "RIGHT" iPhone.

1: GPS
2: More Storage
3: Open carrier/3G
4: Connect options, USB 2+, wireless
5: Better camera
6: Stylus

etc etc.

And what would sell the iPhone like crazy?

VOIP.

Right now I can get a free device that plugs into USB and then I connect a regular old phone into that and can make UNLIMITED CALLS to/in the US for only $20 A YEAR!!!

$60 a month for At&T;and $600 for a iPhone that does a half assed job of a $800 laptop? FSCK THAT!!

Fix the iPhone Apple or die trying. Also fix the lousy glossy glary screens too.

Mar 25, 08 - 04:47 pm Comment from: @Mad Mac Maniac

Apparently most people still want the iPhone in spite of your rant.

Mar 25, 08 - 04:51 pm Comment from: HMCIV

silverhawk,

That extra iPhone store is helping you fat cats in MN subsidize the iPhone crisis while the rest of us beg in the streets for accessories & protective cases.

Mar 25, 08 - 05:01 pm Comment from: Blue Dream

@Mad Mac Maniac...I can tell you a great place to stick your prehistoric stylus craving.

Mar 25, 08 - 05:11 pm Comment from: Goople

I'm not surprised at all. its a hell of phone. I wouldn't be surprised to see Microosft fully embrace it with software and live services.

Mar 25, 08 - 05:15 pm Comment from: Mad Mac Maniac

My daddy's on welfare and hasn't worked since 1987. I have a Tracfone..

My father is retired quite wealthy in fact, I don't need any of his money. I've made my own.

Actually I do have a Tracfone and a AT&T;Razr and a 3G card for my MacBook Pro. (along with a few iPods, 160GB, 80Gb, nano, MacPro etc) Each have their respective uses.

One phone is always on, the other isn't. Lots of people do that, it's nothing new.

So in my opinion as a 30 year, highly technological user (and abuser), the iPhone is a over rated POS (translation: piece of sh*t) in it's present form. Much like the first few generations of the iPod were, but at least the prime function was useable, storing and playing all of your music easily and simply.

The iPhone is a frigging hassle to make a call and everything else it does it doesn't do very well.

I had one and gave it up.

Try again Apple, get it right in iPhone 2.0 that all.

Do you feel the love?

Mar 25, 08 - 05:19 pm Comment from: Afib

No iPhones in Gotham?

1. Apple didn't expect the increased consumer demand.
2. Insufficient parts in stock to fabricate more iPhones.
3. New iPhones soon to be released.
4. SDK run on iPhones.
5. Apple renegotiating with AT&T;.
6. Apple negotiating with someone other than AT&T;.
7. Someone forgot to order more iPhones.

Mar 25, 08 - 05:25 pm Comment from: Mad Mac Maniac

is triple M Zune Tang?

No. I'm a old Apple critic that has gone under zillions of nicks on this site for well, over a dozen years.

I praise Apple for good stuff and abuse them for sub standard crap because I know Steve Jobs reads this site religiously.

I also have been in Cupertino HQ last year, trust me. YOU DON'T WANT TO WORK THERE!!

So to you Apple Store employees, be glad your at where your at. Don't dream of moving to HQ.

Mar 25, 08 - 05:29 pm Comment from: coolfactor

@MadMadManiac

Wow, dude. Chill out. You're spewing is disturbing.

Stylus???? Come on already.

And you completely ignored the fact that the majority of iPhone users will be using a WiFi network when browsing the internet. Sure, 3G will be a nice boost when not near a hotspot, but if you're going to criticize, at least paint the full picture.

Apple _needed_ AT&T;(or any competent carrier) in order to establish a maintainable distribution/support system for the iPhone. It's not just a matter of selling an unlocked phone to millions of people. A clear channel of support needs to be in place.

Mar 25, 08 - 05:34 pm Comment from: Mac-nugget

The where also sold out past weekend before last, hear in Houston Texas. So, who said these things aren't selling?

Mar 25, 08 - 05:42 pm Comment from: Rainer

A lot of them are going to Europe, I must assume.

People are literally boarding planes to NYC with nothing but what they wear just to go on a shopping-spree to even buy the suitcases.

Now excuse me while I have to remind my co-worker to bring a time-capsule back from his vacation in Florida...
FYI: the 1 TB TC costs 729 USD (at current exchange rate) here in .ch, including 7.6% VAT.

Mar 25, 08 - 05:47 pm Comment from: Rich

@ Mad Mac Maniac,

You gotta lay off of the coke and the hip-hop attitude/ jargon.

The iPhone isn't for everyone and that is a good thing.

Mar 25, 08 - 05:56 pm Comment from: @Mad Mac Maniac II

Dude, you might want to dial back on the coffee. You sound pretty caffeinated. No, let me amend that: REALLY caffeinated.

Also, face facts: you're a purist. A railbird. A perfectionist. Even when Apple does issue what you listed above, I'm sure you'll come up with a new list of demands that would make any iPhone beneath your dignity.

Given the demand for the iPhone, either the market is wrong and we're all idiots but you, or you're underestimating the market. Your choice. But know this: you're very much in the minority. For a product that's barely one year old, even the most difficult to please critics are quite impressed. Given that perspective, you might want to soften your stance.

Finally, consider that you're a consumer and not the producer. The producer, in this case, Apple has to contend with the following, much of which is not under its control:

1. 3G is not yet available on the iPhone because its partner, AT&T;, is still behind on its nationwide build-out of 3G. It may be that the money they're making on the iPhone is what's underwriting AT&T;'s build-out of a 3G network. While 3G coverage is getting better in metro areas, it's still spotty elsewhere. Apple can't change that, except to drive demand for 3G.

2. As reported, 3G chips have been VERY power hungry. If Apple had come out with a 3G iPhone out of the gate, it might have been slapped with fierce criticism that the iPhone has no battery life. That could have killed a great product immediately. We know that much more efficient 3G chips are coming, but to my knowledge, none have shipped yet.

3. GPS: that's another way to suck battery life. Like 3G chips, GPS will improve a lot. But in the mean time, there are workarounds that do the job pretty well.

4. More storage: We've already seen significant expansion of memory on the iPhone. But it's still expensive on the open market. Apple does not make the memory chips. But the demand that Apple has created for them is driving down the cost. My advice: be patient.

5. Camera: If you want a good digital camera, buy one. Get a Nikon, Canon or whatever. A camera is a nice-to-have, but it's not the primary component in the an iPhone.

6. Other carriers: when pigs fly. Apple and AT&T;have a contractual agreement. Pendantic rants won't change that. In time, this will change. Just not now. Deal with it.

7. Stylus: Maybe you should get a Palm or a Windows device instead. I'm SURE you'll love those. Or you could increase your medication. It's your choice.

People like you make my head hurt.

Mar 25, 08 - 05:56 pm Comment from: MacSmiley

Welcome to South Dakota, NYC dwellers. We've never had iPhones available here... no AT&T;and no compatible network for jailbreakers either.

Mar 25, 08 - 06:16 pm Comment from: Whatever

@ Mad Mac Maniac - Just because you can't operate the simplest phone around doesn't make it a bad product - you can keep your shit phones and I will happily use my iPhone that I have had since day one and Love it. It is the best device on the market - I can't stand to touch any other phone out there as they are all crap.

The thing that worries me is the other device makers are making touch screens that everyone will think operate like the iPhone but they don't so people will think that the iPhone is the same and they might not even look at one after those other pieces of crap.

Mar 25, 08 - 06:37 pm Comment from: Heig

Mad Mac Manic…the name says it all!
He and Zune Tang must be brothers.

Mar 25, 08 - 06:50 pm Comment from: Chris

I have to agree with Mad Mac Maniac. The iPhone is a worthless toy until it has all of the following features built-in:

1. HD video recorder with 2 hour capacity
2. Real-time worldwide SATCOM
3. A dedicated egg timer
4. Live spoken language translation

Mar 25, 08 - 06:51 pm Comment from: iPhoner

I was in NYC last week looking to buy a iPhone 16GB.
No luck at all in all 3 Applestores and now this...!

Mar 25, 08 - 07:07 pm Comment from: Reclaimer

Chris, I couldn't agree more!
In addition the iPhone needs:

5. Antigravity capabilities
6. Multidimensional transport
7. Warp drive phase discriminator
8. Universal Translator
9. Built-in personal shield generator
10. A flint knife

Mar 25, 08 - 07:08 pm Comment from: Heig

Sorry about the spelling. I'm drunk right about now.

Macromancer... Agree 100%

And if you don't live in a Metro area good luck getting G3, check AT&T;G3 coverage.

Mar 25, 08 - 07:55 pm Comment from: AliceKK

Washington State is out of iPhone 16gb, slowly trickling in.

Mar 25, 08 - 09:25 pm Comment from: RafMac

All iPhones are OUT OF STOCK in Orlando and Tampa Bay Apple Stores today. Heard that Southern Florida Apple Stores are also out of stock since last week.

Mar 25, 08 - 09:34 pm Comment from: Ampar

To Reclaimer:

I agree with all of those except number 10. A flint knife.

If we've learned anything from Naomi Campbell, you can take someone out with your cell phone by channeling the rage of Joan Crawford and by aiming for the head. If you just need a sharp edge, take out the SIM card. And starting a fire is easy but it might void your AppleCare.

Mar 25, 08 - 09:46 pm Comment from: igads

@Mad Mac Maniac

And you are comparing it to what exactly? Take off your reality distortion goggles and see what is in front of you and not some whimsical non-existent product.

I know people like you. Waiting for the the kitchen sink approach and never buy anything and criticize everything. Zune Tang, Mad Mac Maniac or whatever your name is, your sense of humor is not funny. Your rants are boring and quite frankly you show the level of your maturity in your first sentence. "Are people stupid or something?

Yes, some are and you are their leader!

Mar 25, 08 - 09:58 pm Comment from: Victor Meldrew

igads, we couldn't have said it any better.

Cheers!

Mar 25, 08 - 10:01 pm Comment from: Brian

It seems that Mad Mac Maniac and Zune Tang were twins—born joined at the scrotum!
Those boys need years of therapy.

Mar 25, 08 - 10:40 pm Comment from: ragarcia

I don't know about the flint knife, but if iPhone2 doesn't come with a toothpick then they might just as well call it the ZunePhone.

Oh, and when oh when will we be able to print things like our boarding passes from the iPhone?

Mar 25, 08 - 10:45 pm Comment from: marcos

Not good. It takes half a day to move them into NY from someplace else. Not good to be out of stock. Must have been a busload of Chinese or Bulgarian tourists in NY with fresh new unlock software. Or alternatively, Marketwatch is preparing a headline which says: "iPhone not possible to sell in NY"

Mar 25, 08 - 11:13 pm Comment from: @mad mac maniac

You are clearly just a frickin idiot.

None of your criticisms makes any sense - no sense at all.

In fact your post is so alarmingly idiotic that its a miracle of kindless that you have been treated well by the replies.

In that spirit, I reiterate - you are a frickin IDIOT, asleep at the wheel of your life, drifting in a fantasy patched together by your overblown ego.

Its time for the Journey to the East.

Mar 26, 08 - 12:46 am Comment from: Mad Max

We just came back from the Apple Store in Pleasanton, CA. They had no 16G iPhones. So we ordered one online with a 2 year Applecare service. $622. Whew!

I don't know. Mad Mac seems more like a critic than a hater. Although he could up his tact just a litte.
