What will Apple name their next cat?  Mac OS X 10.6 Lion?
Thursday, May 08, 2008 - 01:07 PM EDT

"What name will Apple use on the next version of Mac OS X?" Ron McElfresh asks for Mac360.

"Forgive me, but I’m doing the chronological order from memory, and if memory serves me correctly, OS X launched as Puma, then Cheetah (or, Cheetah, then Puma), then Jaguar, advanced to Panther, became popular with Tiger, and finally exploded on the world scene and increased market share with Leopard," McElfresh writes.

McElfresh writes, "If Apple sticks with a big cat naming convention then what’s left? Lion?"

McElfresh writes, "Somehow the king of the jungle seems far too cartoonish, especially after Panther, Tiger, and Leopard, one after the other ate into Microsoft’s market share... The only big cat left is Lion, and... besides, most Lions just seem to lollygag around and not do much."

"Lions are out," McElfresh writes, "So, what’s in? What’s left?"

Washington State University Cougars!!!

May 08, 08 - 01:19 pm Comment from: Jeremy

If they get the Zeta file system working by then they could change to OS-Z I suppose. The bad part however is that to US citizens this would sound like "Oh Ess Zee" which is kind of feminine compared to the (original) "Zed."

May 08, 08 - 01:19 pm Comment from: Steve516

Well, there is nothing to say it has to stay with a big cat.... Apple is changing lots of things as they evolve. Perhaps the naming will change too.

I vote for Cougar grin

I like Cougar. Sounds like something that'd kill if it got the chance.

I say no on Lynx, though. Like Jaguar, it just reminds me of an Atari game system that was a commercial failure.

@ WAZZU

Not a good idea. All MS would have to do is call Windows 7 "Husky" and Apple would be doomed. wink

May 08, 08 - 01:21 pm Comment from: HMCIV

Nittany Lions!
Puma

Oh, what about Tigger? (T-i-double g-Grrrr!)

Polydactyl for the new multi-touch interface.

May 08, 08 - 01:22 pm Comment from: almux

Is Apple bounded to cats?
Even not sure if there's gonna be any animal name to be given next time.

Could be galaxies, super novas... whatever great universal thing...

May 08, 08 - 01:22 pm Comment from: Blue Dream

How about "Tom" for Tom and Jerry, or Garfield?
Oh, wait...those would be good for the next Vista.
What will happen when we get to OX 11?

SaberTooth

Mr. Bigglesworth

To inspire world domination.

May 08, 08 - 01:27 pm Comment from: Military Police

Earthmover ... oh, that's a different kind of Cat.

Ocelot was the one in my mind when I read the title link, and it was funny to see that as MDN's suggestion.

How about ... Saber Tooth. grin

Or what about domestics: Tabby, Calico...

May 08, 08 - 01:28 pm Comment from: Tommy Boy

Lion should be the last of the big cats in the OS X naming convention.

May 08, 08 - 01:28 pm Comment from: SMacSteve

Cougar is a another name for the Puma in case any of you didn't know. So technically that cat has been used.

My favorite is Ocelot is my favorite that I've been waiting for. I think this one is more likely the next one. Then Lynx or Bobcat, which are to different cats. I think Lion will be used for a much bigger release. Like 10.8 or something.

May 08, 08 - 01:29 pm Comment from: HotinPlaya

We will have to wait for the next German tank

May 08, 08 - 01:29 pm Comment from: Ampar

Cougar is nice. Then Apple could run a "Got MILF?" ad campaign.

May 08, 08 - 01:30 pm Comment from: little tiny nitch guy

Fritz the Cat!

May 08, 08 - 01:31 pm Comment from: the steen_machine

Margay? Because they like to chase Ballmers...er, monkeys?

May 08, 08 - 01:31 pm Comment from: DudeMac

I'm guessing they'll use Cougar grin

May 08, 08 - 01:31 pm Comment from: Think

Mr. Bigglesworth

Yes, very good.

or

Octopussy

In the name of fighting evil.

May 08, 08 - 01:33 pm Comment from: Blue Dream

Seems to be double duplicating for some reason.
How about Labrinyth or maybe get into the Tyrannosaurus Rex thing...something that munches on the competition.
Should sound techie/futuristic...please don't let Intel help name it...I detest the names they come up with. Longhorn was so awesome...let's let the team that came up with that name our next OS. What are some of the names on Larry Ellison's yachts??

May 08, 08 - 01:34 pm Comment from: Passerby

Apple could use some of their cash to geneer a new big cat, name it something cool, then name the OS after that.

May 08, 08 - 01:34 pm Comment from: Ampar

Apple has registered Lynx and Cougar as trademarks.

May 08, 08 - 01:35 pm Comment from: Think

Then you could get to say Octo twice.

Wanna see Octopussy running on my Mac Pro Octo-Core Tower?

Might get into trouble saying that in the office.

May 08, 08 - 01:35 pm Comment from: Steveeee

How about eating the lion share of the pie?

May 08, 08 - 01:36 pm Comment from: Ampar

Lynx has a good homonym association to computer-related functions and the WWW.

Lion? Not so much.

May 08, 08 - 01:39 pm Comment from: s

I believe Lynx is already taken by another vendor.

How about going international: Tora

May 08, 08 - 01:40 pm Comment from: Ampar

"Wanna see Octopussy running on my Mac Pro Octo-Core Tower?"

And if it overheats, you could blame it on a yeast infection.

May 08, 08 - 01:41 pm Comment from: Harvey

Since Apple already registered Lynx and Cougar, those will be 10.6 and 10.7 (not necessarily in that order). Then there might be a lion, I suppose. They'll have to change the naming convention eventually, or we'll be running Tabby, Calico, Siamese, Tom, and Stray.

May 08, 08 - 01:42 pm Comment from: HolyMackerel

Felix - "…he reaches into his bag of tricks."

Sounds like Apple!

Or 'Storm' - a dark cloud over vista.

May 08, 08 - 01:42 pm Comment from: qka

Names used to date:
OS X v10.0 - Cheetah
OS X v10.1 - Puma
OS X v10.2 - Jaguar
OS X v10.3 - Panther
OS X v10.4 - Tiger
OS X v10.5 - Leopard

So Cheetah and Puma are out. Years ago I saw a rumor that 10.6 would by Lynx.

I know that in North America there are many common names for cougars/mountain lions. Just the same, I suggest Catamount, the New England version of the name, and the mascot of the University of Vermont.
