25-year PC vet dumps Microsoft’s Windows for Apple Mac, finds ‘digital heaven’
Monday, March 31, 2008 - 11:55 AM EST

"I was an avid fan of PCs for 25 years. I was an ardent supporter of Microsoft Windows, even during the dark Me years. However, when Vista came to my desk last fall, I lost my passion for PCs," Dave Murphy, founder of ITrain.org, blogs for SaysDave.com.

MacDailyNews Take: Déjà vu: 15-year Windows vet tries Apple Mac: ‘My God! This is amazing!’ - December 04, 2006

"For the last two weeks, I have been in computing heaven," Dave writes. After his "Sony Vaio, running Windows Vista Business Edition, crashed for the umpteenth time," Dave's wife, "a computer engineer, overheard my under-the-breath comments and suggested that I finally give up on Vista, as it seemed to require more time to maintain that to productively use. She suggested that I call Apple and order a MacBook; she was sure that they could deliver it within a day."

Dave writes, "Today, it has been two weeks since my Vista computer last crashed. I don’t care; I am in heaven with my MacBook Pro. I have been more productive on this machine than I ever was on a DOS or Windows machine... I cannot imagine ever buying another Windows notebook."

Great story. Maybe the Mac conversion IS a religious experience! I felt the same way back in 1997 when I got my first iMac. All my friends were getting PCs. They had to install multiple discs of software, connect an endless array of thick wires and plugs, and had utterly unreliable components (dude, I need a new ___). When I got my first Tangerine iMac, all I did was plug it in, and it was ready to go. Now that was a change in affairs!!!

PC vs. Mac? No comparison. Never was while Steve Jobs was around.

Welcome, Dave!

Dave's not here man.

Mar 31, 08 - 10:40 am Comment from: Walter Chillum

I dumped windows way back in the days of 3.1. Although I'd used computers on and off since the late 1970s (pre any type of window interface) every time I used a non-mac computer either something would go wrong or I'd have to fix something that had gone wrong for someone else.

In 1993 a friend gave me his ageing Mac Plus. In all that time I'd only ever lost two paragraphs of work, and that was when I was using OS 6x. Needless to say I don't use a Mac Plus anymore.

Nowadays, I take a lot of satisfaction in switching windows users. It's not a matter of telling people how superior macs are (which many of the mac fan boys insist on doing) rather it's about getting windows users to experience hassle free computing. Using a mac is fun whilst using a windows machine just means problems. That's what it was like in 1993 and it hasn't changed in 15 years.

@Steve

Uhhhh...Tangerine iMacs were not available in '97 it was like '99 for the "colors" to arrive. The Bondi Blue was not even available until '98 and it was the first iMac.

I heard the guy´s grandfather finally gave up the horse and buggy in 1943 - 25 years after the first cars came off the assembly line.
Said the man in 1943 -" I guess horses aren´t the future for transportation."

@Harvey: "Two ways to impress a Windows user."

Why would anyone ever need to do either of those things? - Whether it be on a Mac or Windows.

Two ways to impress a Windows user.

1. Shortcuts

Put a file and a folder on the desktop. Make an alias to the file. (the PC user would call this a shortcut.) Double-click to demonstrate that the alias works. Rename the file and move it into the folder. Double click on the alias--the file opens! [A Windows shortcut would produce an error message, would volunteer to find the file, and fail.]

2. Video

Open a web page with any kind of animation. Grab the window with the mouse and jerk it around all over the screen. The animation remains in the window and keeps playing. [On Windows the animation doesn't move with the window; you have to put the window back in its original position to see the animation again.]

I showed a PC user #1 at Best Buy yesterday. It was enough to induce him to buy a Mac.

Mar 31, 08 - 12:02 pm Comment from: Harvey

Things used to be different, but today, there is one fundamental difference between Microsoft and Apple: Apple makes products for its customer to use, while Microsoft makes products for its partners to sell. I think that explains everything.

Mar 31, 08 - 12:08 pm Comment from: Bill Gates

Yes I would rather consider people to switch from Windows PCs to Macs because I have been using Macs for 5 years now after I have released Windows Vista. I am planning to retire this year and would keep on using Macs rather than Window Machines.

Mar 31, 08 - 12:11 pm Comment from: olternaut

Where are the PC fanboys when you need them? They are awfully quiet today aren't they?

Mar 31, 08 - 12:12 pm Comment from: Reclaimer

Well he can't be a Windows fan as Windows hasn't been around that long.

One of the things that I like to remind the self righteous Windows users and IT people that long before there was Windows, there was Mac OS.

More and more people are coming over to the Mac, many more are Mac curious and come over at some point.

How could anyone be an "avid fan of PCs" for any time at all, never mind 25 years? Accept it, yes, live with its limitations, yes. But have any kind of "passion" for the PC running any flavor of DOS or Windows? I can't see it.

Mar 31, 08 - 12:45 pm Comment from: @Reclaimer

He said DOS and/or Windows, and DOS was certainly available in 1983.

I got my MacPro last week. Now that is "computing heaven". The migration assistant only took two hours and a half, and my entire setup was up an running. Other then updating a couple of drivers for my Wacom tablet and my printer everything, including the Adobe Creative Suite 3, migrated perfectly. I love my Mac, heck, even my old G5 which paid for half this MacPro through keeping their hi resale value, was a great computer.

Mar 31, 08 - 02:18 pm Comment from: DogGone

I got an MBP last week. My last 2 macs were a PB g4 and a G4 desktop (Sawtooth). The new machine really kicks ass. Since I have to use Windows at work, I installed XP via boot camp and used Parallels to have the two OSes side by side. The performance of the machine running both OSX and XP is unbelievable. You can really have your cake and eat it with the Intel Macs.

Funny thing is that Word 2003 (XP) launches immediately whereas the OSX (2008) version takes 30 seconds to launch. M$ must have really tried to bog down the Mac version.

@Harvey; "Two ways to impress a Windows user."....

Why would anyone, whether a Mac or Windows owner, want to do either of these two things you posted???

Why would anyone be impressed about something that one never does with their computer???

Mar 31, 08 - 02:53 pm Comment from: James L. Buckman - Mac Owner

It says on D. Murphy´s website that he is the founder of ITrain, International Association of Information Technology Trainers.

So, Dave, you going to refund all the money you took from people you have been training wrong and misleading them on Windows technology for the last 25 years???

Mar 31, 08 - 02:58 pm Comment from: Chris

Harvey,

I tried both of the things you suggested on Windows XP. They both worked fine.

HAL: I'm afraid. I'm afraid, Dave. Dave, my mind is going. I can feel it. I can feel it. My mind is going. There is no question about it. I can feel it. I can feel it. I can feel it. I'm a...fraid.

HAL: Good afternoon, gentlemen. I am a HAL 9000 computer running Windows Vista Ultimate. I became operational at the H.A.L. plant in Urbana, Illinois on the 12th of January 2002. My instructor was Mr. Ballmer, and he taught me to do a dance. would you like to see my Monkey Dance?

@Macster - you're right, it was 99. My bad. Geez, only 9 years on the Mac. Makes me feel like a newbie.

Mar 31, 08 - 04:41 pm Comment from: Macster

@Steve

9 years is definitely not "newbie"...hell you were around for Classic Mac OS! Oh, I bought a tangerine iMac too in '99....I still have it and it still runs great!

Same reason Ford sold the Escort to so many people.

Mar 31, 08 - 05:46 pm Comment from: ken1w

It's amazing to me how so many Windows folks never even consider getting a Mac until something REALLY bad happens or someone else suggests it (or both). Momentum is a powerful thing, and Apple needs to come up with even more ways to put that idea of switching into the brains of Windows users.

Mar 31, 08 - 06:40 pm Comment from: old scool

One of the things that I like to remind the self righteous Windows users and IT people that long before there was Windows, there was Mac OS.

Also remind them that long before Mac OS, there were Apple II's running VisiCalc... in businesses no less.

I too started on PC's, but eventually saw the light and switched to Apple. That was in 1983. smile

Mar 31, 08 - 07:49 pm Comment from: Spark

"Momentum is a powerful thing"

It's Inertia. A body at rest tends to stay at rest. Few buy new toasters until the old one starts to burn the bread. The fact that Vista did not provide a deliverance from flawed XP has put a lot people with aging PCs between a rock and hard place. Microsoft has ceded the desktop to Apple. This is just the beginning. My sister in law just bought her first Mac to replace her PC that was so infected with spyware and adware that she couldn't use it any longer.

This is the kind of good news story I need after learning it takes 2 minutes to hack a Mac.

Somebody tell Dave to install Firefox, at least until Safari gets patched raspberry

Apr 01, 08 - 03:31 am Comment from: vanfruniken

The story just goes to show how efficient the advertising machine has been to inspire fear in potential switchers (and how inefficient the Apple advertising machine -- up until recently, that is).

Apr 01, 08 - 05:39 pm Comment from: Marcos El Malo

I stuck with the Mac thru Apple's dark days, back when our dirty little secret was extensions. Anyone remember trying to troubleshoot extensions with Conflict Catcher? I basically had to reboot my Mac to enable different sets of extensions for different tasks (or to play games). What a huge PITA!

Thank God that Apple bought NeXT (or NeXT bought Apple for negative 200 million, if you want to look at it that way), and we got both Steve Jobs and OS X.
