$30 WiFi -only SlingPlayer iPhone app to be released within the next 24-hours
Tuesday, May 12, 2009 - 01:30 PM EST

"Apple sometime in the next 24 hours will release Sling Media's highly anticipated SlingPlayer application for the iPhone onto its App Store, but the software will arrive without 3G wireless support," Slash Lane reports for AppleInsider .

"Sling Media submitted the application to the App Store nearly six weeks ago but it has thus far failed to see approval amid rumors that AT&T had asked Apple to deny the software in its original form because the carrier was concerned about the app's potential to saturate its 3G network," Lane reports.

"Those rumors appear to have been true. AppleInsider spoke to SlingMedia on Tuesday and confirmed that Apple will push the application onto the App Store sometime between 12:00 a.m. and 6:00 am eastern time tomorrow... The version Apple approved is WiFi-only," Lane reports.

... which only shows how bad the ATT network really is, and how far we have to go to have a totally wireless internet.

We will get there... but damn, it's going to take forever

@jtnol
It might take quite some time but I think the iPhone and App Store are the catalyst the market needs to make the necessary improvements to networks.

May 12, 09 - 12:56 pm Comment from: NGC598

Or it shows how far the iPhone can take a network. If the iPhone should land on Verizon, how fast before there system start to grind.
Over half of the internet in the US goes throught the iPhone via ATT. The other percentage goes through all the other carriers. If the fact that over half the internet is controlled by the iPhone.
Whatever the case maybe, I will bet that Verizon will moan when the iPhone land in the millions on their network.

May 12, 09 - 12:56 pm Comment from: scott

I know it's a cool app, but people could simply not buy it and write to apple and say I'll buy it when 3G is enabled.

May 12, 09 - 01:09 pm Comment from: R2

Is SlingPlayer over 3G/EDGE disabled for all the other smartphones on ATT?

May 12, 09 - 01:15 pm Comment from: NOFX

$30 for WiFi only! Are you kidding me! If you're gonna pay this, which unfortunately I probably will, please make sure you have the correct SlingBox before you pay the money... Remember, Slinging with the iPhone will only work with newer models from what I've read... I'm not sure of the exact models Sling units, but you can find out on Sling's site.

May 12, 09 - 01:15 pm Comment from: Trottier

That's a lot of money for us original Slingbox owners ... We have to buy a new Slingbox (which according to reports technically isn't necessary) and pay $30 ... They have made this move a razors edge decision for a lot of people. Then you throw no 3G...

May 12, 09 - 01:16 pm Comment from: Anonymous©

It's not that the ATT network is so bad, but that iPhone users saturate the network, because they use it 10x as much. AT&T;can't win for losing.

May 12, 09 - 01:16 pm Comment from: mike_in_helsinki

@JB

Bullshit.

AT&T;should not be expected to provide landline broadband capability in their network. Or put it another way, they will, no problem, but guys like you will bitch and not want to pay.

They Joe the farmer will bitch because his farm does not get 3G capability. etc.

And that is why Apple also wont let you run background processes. Its to save you from your own stupid self. Consumers are idiots and need wiser souls to step in and do the thinking for them.

Wise policy by both Apple and AT&T;. Helps to reduce the whining babies that crop up when their diapers get soiled.

Thirty dollars? No thanks. This app should be free for SlingBox owners.

May 12, 09 - 01:17 pm Comment from: critic

As a non-slingplayer user, I am really glad that they didn't allow the ATT service to be slammed by this. Even if I did use sling player, I would still rather not have it work on 3G and be able to make a phone call when I need to.

May 12, 09 - 01:17 pm Comment from: Anonymous©

It'll work with Sling Pro, Pro-HD and Solo.

May 12, 09 - 01:19 pm Comment from: Demon

All Wireless carriers in the US suck.
Sling Player for any smart phone will kill the Wireless network if you have 2 or 3 active users on a single base node.

May 12, 09 - 01:26 pm Comment from: dl

Such a shame, an application as good as Sling Player, sure won't be worth $30 if it is just WiFi capable. Just one more reason I wish Verizon had picked up the iPhone. AT&T;service stinks !!!!!!

May 12, 09 - 01:27 pm Comment from: TheMacAdvocate

No surprises - except maybe the price. Don't know where they picked that point‚ but lol.

Apple is so close to smashing the streaming media market. I just wish they'd pull the trigger.

So as other smartphones become more intuitive and customers begin using them for data in higher volumes, will the carriers start gimping the capabilities of their third party apps the same way ATT does?

Why is the iPhone being punished for its success?

Kill your television!

May 12, 09 - 02:04 pm Comment from: dave

That AT&T;can't handle SlingPlayer on the iPhone over 3G is because the iPhone is TOO POPULAR. People are actually using the capabilities that they have been sold (namely a so-called "unlimited" data plan).

SlingPlayer already sells their software for other phones that does permit viewing over 3G, but it's not a problem because there aren't that many people actually using it.

If SlingPlayer were enabled to work over 3G on the iPhone, it would show how massively AT&T;has oversold their network.

It's not just AT&T;, and it's not just wireless. Virtually the whole rest of the world has better networks than we do, which shows what happens when greed is the prime motivator for every business decision.

May 12, 09 - 03:13 pm Comment from: Gabriel

@ Cubert - http://whitedot.org/ is another good site.

And $30 for an iPhone app that's WiFi-only? What kind of crack are these guys smoking?

May 12, 09 - 03:15 pm Comment from: Gabriel

@ alansky

I sure hope the antitrust crackdown that's apparently coming puts a *strong* focus on any company that provides internet access. Between the phone companies and the cable companies, there's a lot of 'splainin' to do about why we're so far behind the rest of the world.

May 12, 09 - 03:48 pm Comment from: dl

Great comment Gabriel, $30 for a WiFi only program !!!!!! They definitely smoking something.

May 12, 09 - 04:48 pm Comment from: Britney's Pregnant Sister

Wi-Fi-only. $30. DOA.

May 12, 09 - 07:39 pm Comment from: Coltrain

Of course its WiFi only - to all the people complaining you don't understand what it would mean to ATT in term of cost and customer satisfaction to allow an app like this. Please try to put things in perspective, it not all that important.

May 12, 09 - 10:03 pm Comment from: cogitoergomac

@ alansky:

Greed? Perhaps, but that is not the whole story. it's also a legacy of having a very early technological deployment. Those countries whose telco infrastructures have evolved primarily in this or the latter part of the previous century, are bound to have some advantages over our own. But Gabriel, I can only assume you have not traveled much. Spend some time in plenty of Latin American countries, or quite a few third world countries, and you will see that we are not behind the rest of the world. I cannot begin to tell you how, when I travel to certain parts, I breathe a sigh of relief to be back home to reliable internet access. Not everywhere, mind you. Quite a few countries are better than ours, and often for reasons that have nothing to do with greed. Sheesh, the bitching, pissing & moaning is unreal.

May 12, 09 - 11:30 pm Comment from: Anonymous©

The app is up. It's $30 as expected. They sell their other mobile apps for $30, so I'm not too surprised, but a little disappointed that it wasn't $20

May 13, 09 - 12:43 am Comment from: NGC598

We are also behind due to a simple fact that our country cover a large geographical area. A lot of countries are cover much less area and can afford to saturate the area with towers, fiber, and cable. Try that with this country, China, or Russia. You find the cost in towers, fiber, and cable becomes very massive. Take Japan and look at the surface area and then cover it over our country.

Factors that few take in consideration! Hello!
