Monday, July 23, 2007 - 01:53 PM EDT

A video has surfaced (via YouTube) that claims to show aspects of the 6th-generation (6G) Apple iPod user interface:

Direct link to the video via YouTube here.

[UPDATE: 1:53pm EDT: YouTube has pulled the video, leaving only the message: "This video is no longer available due to a copyright claim by Apple, Inc."]

Believe it when you see it ®

Jul 23, 07 - 11:04 am Comment from: MadMac

Why so shady? If this is real, where's the device? If this new interface is just running in test mode on a Mac, then show the darn thing.

I'm raising the BS flag early.

Though the animation fits with what we've seen them do in the iPhone.

Jul 23, 07 - 11:04 am Comment from: MikeR

Just release it already!

Jul 23, 07 - 11:05 am Comment from: Robo

Looks fake to me

Jul 23, 07 - 11:05 am Comment from: Poos

That is NOT the new ipod interface..

1) Look at the second hands on the 2 clocks....They are not in sync.

2) Look at the Beatles tracklisting....Half of those songs are NOT on the Love album

3) It's a bit bland

Nothing to see here...Move along.

Jul 23, 07 - 11:10 am Comment from: artsea

Maybe a nano interface, but if that's an iPod Video, sales will plummet by millions a month and Apple will crumble...

Jul 23, 07 - 11:13 am Comment from: M.X.N.T.4.1

I bloody well hope not.

Jul 23, 07 - 11:17 am Comment from: Mr. Reeee

Whatever...

Just gimme a widescreen iPod.

Jul 23, 07 - 11:19 am Comment from: unsure

this was posted on macrumors on the weekend and it was removed. reason given that Apple Legal contacted the site and told them to remove both the images of the new ipod and the video. if that makes it true or not i dont know but was removed pretty quickly.

Jul 23, 07 - 11:20 am Comment from: Reclaimer

A Zune could NEVER do that!

Jul 23, 07 - 11:24 am Comment from: pog

MacRumors.com got an Apple Legal takedown notice for posting this, which kind of lends credibility to it being real. Apple don't issue legal take downs for fakes.

Jul 23, 07 - 11:31 am Comment from: Farlo

I'm raising the "I don't care until I see a real iPod flag!" After that, well....still don't much care. Okay, a little.

Jul 23, 07 - 11:34 am Comment from: ping

Fake. Not even a good one.

MW: "serious" - not really!

Jul 23, 07 - 11:38 am Comment from: Macaday

Probably a version that was kicked onto the scrap-heap months ago..

Competitors are no doubt rummaging through the Cupertino 'trash cans' as we speak...

Jul 23, 07 - 11:40 am Comment from: OzzysCross101

As someone said already, the interface and animations are reminiscent to the iPhone and what we've come to know from Apple, but I, too will believe it when I see it.

Although, I'm half-hoping this is true; my poor monochrome 4G is on its last legs :(

Jul 23, 07 - 11:44 am Comment from: Eamonn O Cathain

There aren't 20 songs on Rubber Soul

Jul 23, 07 - 11:55 am Comment from: bloo

I sure hope Apple wouldn't put out something this dumb looking.

I don't really see how they could put out anything less than a touchscreen iPod.

Jul 23, 07 - 11:56 am Comment from: NeverFade

I call complete and utter bullshit.

Jul 23, 07 - 12:01 pm Comment from: Mittens Romney

bloo said: "I sure hope Apple wouldn't put out something this dumb looking."

I guess you haven't seen an iPhone. Apple already did put out something that looks like that.

Jul 23, 07 - 12:03 pm Comment from: macman

Why would Apple deviate from the iPhone's iPod interface? Just doesn't make sense, both economically and from the fact that Apple always strives to maintain consistent interfaces.

Jul 23, 07 - 12:24 pm Comment from: tommy

wasnt this on macrumors like last week or so?

Jul 23, 07 - 12:27 pm Comment from: Mikko

The UI differs from iPhone because it won't have OS X in it and it will be controlled by click wheel, not with touch screen.

This is also marketing strategy from Apple. If you are someone who wants large capacity iPod but also nice interface and a real lifestyle product, you have to buy them both.

Jul 23, 07 - 12:28 pm Comment from: lbuschjr

Hoax. Why would Apple design completely different clock software from that which is on the iPhone, which is running OS X.5, rumored to be the OS that will drive the next iPod?

And if it really was the next iPod, why all the transitions, etc.? Much better to hide the fake production, that's why.

Jul 23, 07 - 01:27 pm Comment from: R2

If it's still being navigated by clickwheel, then it better be that touchpad on the back like we saw in an Apple patent application a few weeks ago.

The screen can't be any smaller than that of the iPhone.

Jul 23, 07 - 01:34 pm Comment from: john

Fake!!! Worthless features and still using the old interface. I don't think Apple would have had to spend this much time on the 6th Gen if that's all they were going to develop. My belief is that the next gen will have the same touch screen as the iPhone with OSX powering the device. Also it will have the same touch scroll features as the iPhone. The video shows the same old interface which Apple could have released long ago.

Jul 23, 07 - 01:38 pm Comment from: gaufre

the link is dead.
bummer.

Jul 23, 07 - 01:59 pm Comment from: R2

If it's so fake, why is Apple on a mission to get it pulled from everywhere?

Jul 23, 07 - 02:02 pm Comment from: jay

With this being pulled at Apple's request, could this be the real deal, or is Apple trying to fake everyone out by "protesting" this version, when they know it really is a fake? What's Apple done in the past?

Jul 23, 07 - 02:16 pm Comment from: @ Eamonn O Cathain

"There aren't 20 songs on Rubber Soul"

Correct, there are 14 in the original UK and current CD versions... however, if you factor in non-LP singles released at the same time - the sort of thing that might appear on an expanded version of Rubber Soul, it would likely approach 20... that's only three singles... makes me wonder what's coming...

Jul 23, 07 - 02:41 pm Comment from: ChristopherOne

Fake. As someone mentioned above, when the two clocks were running at the same time, the second hand movements were off. That alone should speak volumes about how fake this thing is. Apple would never miss something that big (for most, read windoze et al, that is a tiny thing, but for Apple; might as well be a cracked display).

Fake.

Jul 23, 07 - 03:14 pm Comment from: Gil

Another posibility is that Apple maybe sending out disinformation just to get a reaction. Just my 2 cents....

Jul 23, 07 - 03:32 pm Comment from: Rainer

Nice idea to host the video on youtube, a wholy-owned subsidiary of Google, whose CEO also sits on the AAPL-board.

Jul 23, 07 - 03:39 pm Comment from: Yours Smugly

Must be real, Apple's reaction is a 100 % sure indicator of that. But a real what? That's the question. We can't say if it's for a next gen iPod, for an 'iPhone nano' or something else.

Jul 23, 07 - 03:55 pm Comment from: Jeff

That thing looks so fugly it could only be a Zune 2.0

Jul 23, 07 - 04:51 pm Comment from: DarkDog

It couldn't be fake - else Apple can't claim trademark.

However, it could / probably is an early proof of concept—which may or may not ever see the light of day. And Apple may just kill it because it was leaked.

Jul 23, 07 - 06:29 pm Comment from: The Dude

What is even more strange then the seconds... it says 5:55 tomorrow on the right of each, but only one clock actually points to 5:55, that other is not even close.

The Dude abides.

Jul 23, 07 - 07:03 pm Comment from: Macgoog

The idea seems reasonable. Looks like todays interface with some cover art added. This seems reasonable with the screen size and time line for development.

Jul 26, 07 - 05:29 pm Comment from: Huck

Wow. It's pretty ugly. I guess even Apple can't bat a thousand.
