“MacRumors user, Peace, discovered that the wireless card in the new Core 2 Duo 20-inch iMac is identified as a Broadcom 802.11n Network Adapter under the latest version of Vista,” arn reports for MacRumors.
“The Broadcom 802.11n adapter provides a draft version of the 802.11n wireless specification which is not yet finalized. The new protocol promises significantly faster transfer speeds than existing 802.11b and 802.11g wireless networks,” arn reports.
The real data throughput is estimated to reach a theoretical 540 Mbit/s (which may require an even higher raw data rate at the physical layer), and should be up to 50 times faster than 802.11b, and well over 10 times faster than 802.11a or 802.11g.
“There has been speculation that Apple’s iTV device will also incorporate the 802.11n protocol. Steve Jobs described the wireless technology only as “802.11” — without specifying the exact protocol,” arn reports. “The new card capabilities were discovered when booting the latest version of Vista. The 802.11n capabilities of the device do not appear to be recognized under Mac OS X at this time.”

dun, dun, dun . . .
Interesting he used vista to figure out what the card was. This is empirical proof that vista is, in every way, shape, and form, better than OS X (and about 3 times as big!).
So that’s what Vista is good for!
That makes me love my new iMac even more (as if that was possible!!). But is there any other ways to confirm that?? Like any programs on the web that can determine the protocol used in the wireless card??
Hmm. Wonder if my new Core 2 Duo 17″ has it as well…….except I don’t want to put Vista on it.
Well an 802.11n wireless card is still kinda useless if the base station doesn’t operate at the increased speed. I’ll celebrate when that happens.
“Interesting he used vista to figure out what the card was. This is empirical proof that vista is, in every way, shape, and form, better than OS X (and about 3 times as big!).”
I’ll assume that was sarcasm.
In any case, why would OSX recognize a device with a non-existant or currently usable standard?
Most Apple retail stores are OUT OF STOCK on Airport Extremes, have been for a few weeks, with nothing in the pipe…
dun dun dun, indeed…
Coming This Tuesday:
Airport Obscene Basestation, featuring 801.11
$179.

I think you meant Fistula not Vista. Check it out, you’ll see.

I don’t think I’m going to click on any link that includes “Anal” and “Fist” while I’m at work….
On that note….has anybody looked at a recent iMac’s wifi hardware with some of the Mac hardware snoops to see what they say?
This is a big deal. With iTV pre-announced and Apple wireless HDTVs rumored, the lack of the required 802.11n wireless for streaming video from the new Macs would be a show stopper for some.
That 24 inch iMac is looking sweet.

The Mac wireless insecurity problem is bigger than we were led to believe, a hardware flaw most likely.
I knew about this a few years back, and have gotten completely off wireless, even bluetooth.
I live in a *cough* very high *cough* military sensitive *cough* neighborhood so I have them as well as their adversaries attacking my equipment regularly.
As always Apple ignores my phone calls and emails on the subject.
Of course it is extremely possible that Vista incorrectly misidentified the wireless technology used by Apple. It is possible that the Apple hardware simply fit a Broadcom definition.

l33th@xx0rz,
Gosh you must be really really clever.
well, folks..when my 24″ iMac arrives on Thursday, I’ll let everyone by Friday know if I find a ‘n’ card in it.
“Coming This Tuesday:
Airport Obscene Basestation, featuring 801.11
$179.”
This is Apple you are dealing with. Price would be more like $299.
That Anal Fistula is some nasty stuff. So glad that article didn’t have pictures. To those wondering, it’s work safe… it’s a medical condition.
I got my 24 inch iMac last week, and would gladly look this up if anyone can tell me how to find out the card type under os x, I don’t wish to install any form of windows.
I’ve been holding off buying a 24″ iMac since His Steveness announced iTV.
I don’t want to be caught out as the AirPort card in the iMac isn’t upgradeable and 802.11g isn’t really fast enough to stream video especially HD.
If this is confirmed that the AirPort card in the 24″ iMac is 802.11n (or pre-n) then I’m ready to buy now.
