85% of Apple Phone users browse mobile Web; iPhone is top device for news, information access
Tuesday, March 18, 2008 - 02:21 PM EDT

Nine months after the iPhone’s U.S. launch, has the device changed the mobile landscape? According to M:Metrics, the mobile media authority, the answer is yes. Today, the measurement firm reports that the iPhone is already the most popular device for accessing news and information on the mobile Web, with 85 percent of iPhone users accessing news and information in the month of January.

“The iPhone has certainly delivered on its hype,” said Mark Donovan, senior analyst, M:Metrics. “Beyond a doubt, this device is compelling consumers to interact with the mobile Web, delivering off-the-charts usage from everything to text messaging to mobile video.”

M:Metrics found that a staggering 30.9 percent of iPhone owners watched mobile TV or video, versus a 4.6 market average, and more than double the rate for all smartphone users. Usage of social networking is also popular among iPhone users: 49.7 percent accessed a social networking site in January, nearly twelve times the market average. Twenty percent of iPhone owners accessed Facebook, one of the first Web properties to customize its content for the iPhone, versus 1.5 percent of the total mobile market.

“This data indicates that the iPhone’s widgets are and effective means to drive mobile content consumption,” observed Donovan. “Two featured widgets, YouTube and Google Maps are extremely popular among iPhone users: 30.4 percent accessed YouTube and 36 percent used Google Maps. In comparison, only one percent of all mobile subscribers accessed YouTube and 2.6 percent checked out Google Maps.”

M:Metrics is also the first to report use of the music playing capability of the iPhone, with 74.1 percent of iPhone owners listening to mobile music in January, compared to 6.7 percent of the total mobile audience. Eighty four percent of iPhone owners who use an MP3 player use an iPod.

M:Metrics revealed the demographic composition of iPhone users, which are similar to the demographics of other smartphone owners. They are more likely to be: male, aged 25-34, earn more that $100,000 and have a college degree, than the average mobile subscriber.

“While the demographics of iPhone users are very similar to all smartphone owners, the iPhone is outpacing other smartphones in driving mobile content consumption by a significant margin,” said Donovan. “In addition to the attributes of the device itself, another important factor to consider is the fact that all iPhones on AT&T are attached to an unlimited data plan. Our data shows that once the fear of surprise data charges is eliminated, mobile content consumption increases dramatically, regardless of device.”

M:Metrics applies trusted media measurement methodologies to assess the audience for mobile content and applications. As the world’s most authoritative mobile media measurement firm, M:Metrics delivers the most accurate mobile market metrics through the world’s largest monthly survey of mobile subscribers as well as automated data collection methodologies. Below are the findings of its January Benchmark Survey.

Based on continually refreshed samples of nationally representative mobile phone consumers, M:Metrics reports summarise market size, device reach, and key demographic and mobile phone usage characteristics. The data presented here is drawn from an extensive survey questionnaire that collects specific device model and carrier subscription information from each month’s sample of mobile phone subscribers, and also drills down into specific details related to current and past usage of various mobile phone applications and content. Data collected from each sample are statistically balanced and projected to the total national population of mobile phone subscribers.

Wow. You make something usable and people use it. Imagine that.

Mar 18, 08 - 02:38 pm Comment from: ping

One interesting aspect to consider is that "all smartphones" in the US contains a considerable portion of iPhones as we know - splitting the top survey into "iPhone" vs. "other smartphones" would lead to an even larger contrast.

“The iPhone has certainly delivered on its hype,” said Mark Donovan, senior analyst, M:Metrics.

That's especially interesting considering that most of the hype came from the media.

10 million in '08? 10 million in '08? 10 million in '08? 10 million in '08? 10 million in '08? 10 million in '08? 10 million in '08? 10 million in '08? 10 million in '08? Ad nauseam.

Honestly, the net is way cool if you use your fingers to browse it. The whole touch thing is just too cool. I've had the iPhone since the first week, and I have yet to have complaints about it.

Mar 18, 08 - 02:57 pm Comment from: ChrissyOne

The iPhone can't do anything more than any other smart phone can do.

Yeah. Right.

Mar 18, 08 - 03:05 pm Comment from: Whatever

I have had mine since day one and still love it and also have no complaints. This is absolutely the best device out there by a mile..

We need a new Ballmer quote on the iPhone. Those are always good for a laugh.

"The iPhone can't do anything more than any other smart phone can do."

In the same way that the lunch lady with the hair net and the mole has the same number of vaginas as, say, Beyonce Knowles...

According to the report two stories down, Apple had a 25% dollar share of the entire US PC market in February. According to Seeking Alpha's survey at the end of January, 33% of all people surveyed who planned to buy a laptop in the next 90 days planned to buy a Mac. The corresponding percentage for desktops was 29%. Since I have yet to see a report of a Mac virus in the wild, and there are hundreds of thousands of PC viruses in the wild, I think it strains credulity a bit to say that the difference is becuase the Mac is so obscure.

To whatever: I still get a chuckle from that but over a year old breaks the new criteria! We need a newer picture of him with his tongue stuck out to the side of his mouth, clutching a fistful of crayons, drenched in his own inspiration and innovating MS's next big thing through sheer, brute force. Like in Scanners.

But.... but.... but.... it doesn't have a keyboard!

Mar 18, 08 - 03:40 pm Comment from: ChrissyOne

To the whole 'viruses' vs. 'viri' debate, I must postulate the following to the proponents of the latter:

True, the plural if 'virus' is 'viri', but that plural for describes many of the same virus together. But we're talking about many different *kinds* of virus when we talk about computer viruses. To wit - the plural of 'genus' is 'genera', not 'geni'.

But here's the rub - the plural of virus os NOT viri. Or virii. And everything I've written above is a complete fabrication.

Exhibit A: The Wikipedia entry on the subject. "The less frequent variations viri and virii are virtually unknown in edited prose, and no major dictionary recognizes them as alternative forms. Their occurrence can be variously attributed to hypercorrection formed by analogy to Latin plurals such as alumni or false analogy to Latin plurals such as radii; idiosyncratic use as jargon among a group, such as computer hackers; and deliberate word play, such as on BBSs (see, e.g.: leet)."

Exhibit B: You sound like a complete twonk when you walk up to a stranger in a computer store, your beard still peppered with pizza crumbs from the campaign the night before, soda stains glistening on your Sin City t-shirt, and snipe "It's actually pronounced Vie-RYE, you ignoramus." One of these I'm going to choke you with a 6' FireWire.

------------------------------

In summation, STFU.

Mar 18, 08 - 04:00 pm Comment from: R2

I can't begin to describe how the iPhone changed my browsing and overall reading habits. It's been miraculous for me to have so much information in the palm of my hand.

I've always wanted a pocket internet communicator and subscribed to carrier mobile web services on previous handsets in hopes of attaining that. It never materialized. The first thing I did upon cracking open my iPhone box (after activating it) was access Safari and I felt like a little kid on Christmas.

On that alone, at least for R2, the iPhone has overwhelmingly delivered on its hype.

You know what's really funny about all this? If you recall the iPhone announcement (or have the keynote saved somewhere like iTunes so you can watch again) it was the 'breakthrough internet device' part that got the least applause.

Just another example of his Steveness knowing then the public what the public really wants. Fascinating, really.

"Just another example of his Steveness knowing then the public what the public really wants. Fascinating, really."

Yes, it really is amazing !

Have you noticed the number of sites made for the iPhone! Does anyone know if a list of "iPhone" sites exist ?

Lol, I wanted to mention that but didn't want to seem long winded.

Yes, when Engadget posted that part during their live blog of the event, they claimed it drew weak applause but I was personally thrilled. I think the audience just didn't like the idea of a standalone internet device that does nothing else, which is what it seemed like before Steve brought the house down a second time with his "these are all one device" announcement.

C1: I fell for that one! Sync line and hooker!

grin

Mar 18, 08 - 05:15 pm Comment from: DLMeyer

This explains several things! Maybe I can't get interested in the iPhone because I'm twice as old as the usual buyer, or less than a quarter as rich! :(
Wasn't it just last week when someone was bleating about the SDK being too little, too late? That people wouldn't buy it because (this, that, the other)? The iPhone doesn't do much (yet) that other Smart Phones can't/don't do, it just makes doing the things it CAN do EASY. I may not "want" one, but I can understand why others might ... and why they might just use their many features.

IM on an iPhone? Without a physical keyboard? Doing it way more often than BlackBerry users? How the hell is that possible?

Wait till I tell Steve Ballmer.

Mar 18, 08 - 05:27 pm Comment from: Beryllium

Virus is a Latin word in origin and it was the generic name for poison. If the word bacterium, which was a mid 19th century modern Latin construct, follows the traditional Latin form for its plural (bacteria), why shouldn't it be correct to follow the Latin form for virii? Cf. bacillus/bacilli

Frankly, I do not really care whether some one says viruses or virii; neither form will put my nose out of joint. And I will know what is meant by either.

Mar 18, 08 - 05:37 pm Comment from: olternaut

The other 15% are either on the shelf of resellers jail-broken for sale where Apple has no agreement with a carrier or they are being used on other carrier networks where they may not be counted except in this indirect way.

I got the iPhone, got the unlimited internet browsing plan but don't know what websites to visit. There are few usual one's I go to like facebook that are designed to be used on mobile phones but don't really know about any others. So if anyone else can help?

Infact I came browsing here on my iPhone when I searched for 'websites that can be browsed from mobile phones'.
