90% of consumers believe Apple iPhone is better than their current mobile phone
Thursday, May 24, 2007 - 03:00 PM EST

Apple StoreThe Strategy Analytics Wireless Device Labs probed consumer perceptions of the Apple iPhone experience in a series of research panels. "Consumer Reactions to the Apple iPhone - Wireless Device Lab Analyzes the "Wow" reports on the iPhone's stellar performance.

In a joint research effort between its Wireless Device Lab and Intelligent System Strategies program, Strategy Analytics explored the appeal of iPhone features, developed comparisons with current products, investigated the nature of the iPhone experience, and gained insights on design criteria for future devices.

"An overwhelming 90 percent of respondents gave the iPhone higher marks than their own handset and over 40 percent of respondents rated the iPhone much better across key functional categories-- including music player, web browsing, voice mail, and phone call management--indicating real innovation in designing a user experience," said Harvey Cohen, President of Strategy Analytics, who conducted this research.

"While the iPhone 'Wow' factor is impressive, our user panel indicated that challenges in pricing and positioning may act as a barrier to mass-market success," said Kevin Nolan, Director of User Experience Research at Strategy Analytics, in the press release. "Nonetheless, the iPhone clearly represents a breakthrough in terms of user experience."

Is this article from the future? How long have I slept? W-w-what year is this?

May 24, 07 - 02:03 pm Comment from: macbookmad

this is like a "Lost" flash forward

May 24, 07 - 02:04 pm Comment from: sarah

90% of consumers think every unreleased product is better than what they are using now if marketing is done well. They can't possibly have a poor perception of it - it isn't available for testing!

May 24, 07 - 02:08 pm Comment from: NeverFade

@ moo

lol!

exactly what I was thinking!!

May 24, 07 - 02:08 pm Comment from: Early Adopter

Damn, Own Phone beats iPhone in texting! Obviously the virtual keyboard interface needs work. Clearly, iPhone has left the door open to ZunePhone. Shares plummet, and it's back to the drawing board. Well, it was a great run, people.

May 24, 07 - 02:09 pm Comment from: One guy from Finland

Wow. Did Apple invent time machine? Did they mention that somewhere? Was it with the new operating system Leopard? Spooky...

May 24, 07 - 02:12 pm Comment from: iPhone Texting?

Texting for iPhone is 7 and other cell phone is 7.5

HOW? they haven't try it! BAD SURVEY!!!!!!

May 24, 07 - 02:14 pm Comment from: sarah

I can see the testing now:
"OK, send a text message on your phone."
Finished?"
"Now imagine sending a text message on the new iPhone."
"Which did you prefer?"
"The iPhone."
"Good. Next question..."

May 24, 07 - 02:22 pm Comment from: R2

I think the results are pathetic. Sure the 90% picture looks nice but web browsing and voicemail alone should be far stronger in favor of the iPhone.

Have you ever browsed the web on a Razr?

You can't understand how much more I fell in love with Steve when he pointed out that shit and called it "baby software."

If all of those people had a chance to use the iPhone, the results would be even more mind boggling.

May 24, 07 - 02:23 pm Comment from: One Guy

I wonder what the other 10% are using? Dope?

May 24, 07 - 02:30 pm Comment from: Mark Holoubek

Price Price Price!

It's like asking people if they think the new Ferrari Fiorano drives better than their car...doesn't mean they'll plunk the cash down for one (OK so the iPhone to regular phone price difference is a little different than a Fiorano...point still stands grin

May 24, 07 - 02:30 pm Comment from: BuriedCaesar

Have to wonder just how many people they polled. Or did they sneak into the lunchroom at 1 Infinite Loop?

May 24, 07 - 02:35 pm Comment from: ivoclar

okay this takes the cake. this is exactly the dumbest piece of article/survey/journalism I've seen in 3.5 eons.

Why didn't they ask people to compare their current cars with the Saab Aero X while they were at it?

May 24, 07 - 02:37 pm Comment from: Drunk Cheney

That analysis device is cool. How well does that thing work on things that haven't even been thought of yet?

May 24, 07 - 02:37 pm Comment from: Mac-nugget

Well Duh!
Sure and 90% of consumers also think Aston Martin Vantage Roadster is better then their current car.

May 24, 07 - 02:39 pm Comment from: R2

For those who don't know what the Saab Aero X is:

May 24, 07 - 02:49 pm Comment from: Next question...

Will you own an iPhone if it costs you $500 to purchase and excluding all other additional monthly fees, taxes, charges, operating costs, and penalties for breaking your 2-year service agreement with AT&T;?

90% of responders said, "No."

There you have it, the best damn phone no one wants to buy.

May 24, 07 - 02:49 pm Comment from: Jeff

"NO GPS"
It uses Google maps which seems pretty good to me.

"SMALL STORAGE"
4GB is small storage on a phone??

"LOUSY CAMERA"
How would you know since there aren't any sample photos?

"LAME"
See above...

May 24, 07 - 02:49 pm Comment from: Marc Zeedar

The chart doesn't make sense. If you're comparing the iPhone to "own phone" shouldn't "own phone" be a standard (i.e. consistent) rating? Like "own phone" is zero and iPhone is either plus or minus that for each feature.

Instead, this is showing "own phone" quality varying as "much better" or "much worse" than what... "own phone"???

Jeff, I believe "Not Now Maybe Later Gator" was making a satirical remark to the slashdot.org article headline which reviewed the original iPod back in 2001, also pointing out how successful the product became, regardless of the review. "No wireless. Less space than a nomad. Lame." ...and the rest is history smile

After my extensive use of the 1st generation of the iPhone, I admit it is wonderful!!!

This is the reaction consumers had to a video of what the iPhone can do.

Or 8GB. See Apple's tech specs on the iPhone.

"LOUSY CAMERA"

2.0 megapixels. Reference: tech specs, link above.

Is that awful or not? I don't exactly live for cameras, so I can't tell.

Lame in comparison to the Zune that was "brownmailed" to me this morning?

Just kidding. smile

MW: study ... or did you mean "survey"?

May 24, 07 - 05:02 pm Comment from: Peter

"It uses Google maps which seems pretty good to me."

Except that I need to know where I am. It's just more of a nuisance--but, arguably, at $500-600, I shouldn't be nuisanced.

"4GB is small storage on a phone?? Or 8GB."

For a phone that plays music, videos, movies, takes pictures, etc.? Yeah, 4GB is pretty small. Especially figuring that it's 3.5GB, once you take into account OS X. Heck, I think I have about 1GB of music on my iPod nano and I'm a piker compared to some of my friends (but all my music is either purchased or ripped from CDs I own, unlike some of my friends...)

8GB is better, obviously. But that's $100 more. To draw an analogy, Dell sells cheapo PCs for $300--not that's you'd want to use them. The 4GB iPhone'll be pretty much unusable, once you try to use all the features at the same time.

<I>"2.0 megapixels. [...] Is that awful or not? I don't exactly live for cameras, so I can't tell."

It's not impressive, but it's not awful. Again, if you're using it for "snapshots", it's decent--You'll get a good 3x5 print out of 2 megapixels. But don't figure you're gonna make posters or anything out of your shots.

Again, it's the standard problem with multifunction devices: you run into trade offs. Want to take it on vacation with you and take lots of pictures? Better not buy a couple of movies for the flight there and back and/or bring your music collection.

May 24, 07 - 05:42 pm Comment from: Steven - Very Interesting Survey

... in that this survey is measuring user experience vs. expectations.

Apple has done a great pre-marketing game for sure. However, the bar has been set very high.
- Will Apple need to beat the expectations in order to sell phone?
- What is these high expectations are not met? Will that kill sales?

May 24, 07 - 05:46 pm Comment from: Rainer

MDN, how could you post *that*?
The iPhone will not be released for weeks, the occasions where people could get a real-life glimpse on it can really be counted on one hand. Probably even the teams at Apple not directly working towards the release are not given iPhones (or they have to hand them back when they leave the building) to test.
And they are showing people videos of it and let them judge after that if they like it better than their current phone or not?
If it wasn't so sad, it would be funny (as in crazy-funny).

Is Ballmer's uncle ok? Welcome to the social.

May 24, 07 - 07:53 pm Comment from: Darth Avenus

The "Wow" starts in late June when the iPhone is unveiled. Can't hardly wait!

May 24, 07 - 08:00 pm Comment from: Right Back At You

1: No GPS Yes GPS is important because it can track you on the map as you get closer to your destination, calculate ETA and "bookmark" locations and hundreds of other things. A "Google map" is just about worthless without a GPS.

Got a GPS? A TomTom?, nice voices directing where to go, when to turn and so forth, it's wonderful. Maps suck ass.

2: Small Storage Space a major problem even at 8GB when a full lenght movie takes around half that much. Then a limited playlist and a few widgets and your done. Oh, is there any room left to take a few pictures with that 2 megapixel camera?

3: Lousy Camera another problem, a 2 megapixel camera is just about worthless. Sure it's good for those tiny closeup shots, but forget any landscape views, not even worth putting it in a phone to begin with. 5 megapixel or better, minimum. With zoom and auto-uploading to website/email for storage.

4: No AM/FM Radio Sure it's important and relatively cheap to implement into the iPhone when your absolutley tired of that tiny shuffle like playlist on the iPhone because, woho! it has limited storage capability.

The iPhone is a start, but it needs SIGNIFICANT IMPROVEMENT IN ORDER TO COMPETE.

The iPHONE IS TOO EXPENSIVE AND NOT ENOUGH FEATURES LIKE ABOVE.

May 24, 07 - 09:01 pm Comment from: Peter

You had me until the AM/FM Radio...

The camera isn't very good, but I tend to take the attitude, as I said above, that it's good for "snapshots." Y'know, like you would take with any of the old disposable film cameras. You want to take good pictures, you need a good camera with good lenses and everything else that goes along with it. If you just want that picture of your friend wearing the goofy hat when he was bombed and post it up on the Internet? This camera will do fine.

But AM/FM Radio? Are you twisted!? Like I want to listen to the radio?!? Don't be absurd! Better idea: give me a memory stick slot.

May 24, 07 - 10:31 pm Comment from: Dale Sorel

Maybe you all should just change your name to iPhoneDailyNews.

May 25, 07 - 12:45 am Comment from: Jeff

I've seen pictures taken with 5 megapixel camera phones. The quality is not any better than 1 or 2 megapixel phones - the pictures are just larger. That's great if you need 8x10s from your phone, but the quality is still not that good.

Remember, increasing megapixels increases size, not quality. Quality is determined by processing and lens technology.

May 25, 07 - 01:12 am Comment from: One guy from Finland

Ok this is ridiculous. That phone is not here and people who haven´t seen it in work says that it is good or bad. Should we wait a little. At least one month? Then when someone has realy touched it and knows how it realy works we will have this discussion.

Say Cheese. t

May 25, 07 - 08:11 am Comment from: Irish Dude

I was thinking the same thing as the first poster. While I'm sure that the iPhone will be awesome, I dont know how people can judge it without having used it.

May 25, 07 - 09:02 am Comment from: Jeff

"While I'm sure that the iPhone will be awesome, I dont know how people can judge it without having used it."

I agree. I plan on looking at the device personally before passing final judgement.

However, the article did state that the responses were based on a "video presentation".

May 25, 07 - 09:12 am Comment from: Vasic

People, turn on your brains, please!

There is nothing wrong with conducting and publishing surveys and studies like this one. There are many who are very much interested in how iPhone will sell. They need to know, as reliably as possible, now, so that they can make their strategic decisions (buy AAPL stock, begin development of iPhone accessories, build new businesses around the iPhone). Lives and businessess depend on the number of iPhones sold in the first months. Therefore, we have analysts (tech and stock) reviewing yet-to-be-released non-existent device, and companies like Strategy Analytics Wireless Device Labs conducting SERIES (not one, but many) of panels about educated users' perception of the device.

After SJ's presentation in January, and a brief one-on-one experience with the device by several prominent tech journalists, it was obvious that the phone was to be an earth-shattering device in mobile telephony market space. This continues to be reinforced day after day, in public, as well as tech media. This isn't because of Apple's deft marketing campaign (how many commercials have you seen for iPhone, as opposed to "Hello, I'm a Mac, I'm a PC"?). It is because of its user interface and, among other things, surveys like the one in this article.

As we come closer to the D-day, the world knows more and more details about this device. And, as we know more, there's more pent-up demand for it. With the price at a perfect point (just below what original Motorola's Startac, or RAZR were, adjusted for inflation), it is now clear that this device will easily eclipse the sales of both Motorola's famous devices. Unlike Moto, though, I believe Apple will be able to sustain iPhone's popularity (much like it did with iPod), using the iPod experience in refreshing the phone at right intervals.

May 25, 07 - 09:19 am Comment from: vasic

About the phone's built-in camera. I know of very few cellphones with cameras with more than 2 megapixels. I have yet to see a picture from a camera cellphone that looks decent. My Sony-Ericsson snaps at 1.3 megapixels, but my 8-years old 750-kilopixel (0.75 megapixel) blows it out of the water with 1024x768 images. Not enough pixels there for anything but a 4x6, but even with twice as many of them from a cellphone camera, there isn't much you can do. There is so much grain that the only thing these snapshots are good for is when you don't have a camera and are desperately need to snap a historic moment. There, cellphone saves the day. I am therefore not expecting iPhone camera to be dramatically better than other cellphones.

May 25, 07 - 11:28 am Comment from: Rudge

If I'm not going to put up with the haters bad-mouthing the iPhone until it's released, what makes you think that I'll put up with phony research giving glowing praise to the iPhone before anyone even sees one? Give it a rest, will you?
