90% of consumers believe Apple iPhone is better than their current mobile phone

Apple StoreThe Strategy Analytics Wireless Device Labs probed consumer perceptions of the Apple iPhone experience in a series of research panels. “Consumer Reactions to the Apple iPhone – Wireless Device Lab Analyzes the “Wow” reports on the iPhone’s stellar performance.

In a joint research effort between its Wireless Device Lab and Intelligent System Strategies program, Strategy Analytics explored the appeal of iPhone features, developed comparisons with current products, investigated the nature of the iPhone experience, and gained insights on design criteria for future devices.

“An overwhelming 90 percent of respondents gave the iPhone higher marks than their own handset and over 40 percent of respondents rated the iPhone much better across key functional categories– including music player, web browsing, voice mail, and phone call management–indicating real innovation in designing a user experience,” said Harvey Cohen, President of Strategy Analytics, who conducted this research.

“While the iPhone ‘Wow’ factor is impressive, our user panel indicated that challenges in pricing and positioning may act as a barrier to mass-market success,” said Kevin Nolan, Director of User Experience Research at Strategy Analytics, in the press release. “Nonetheless, the iPhone clearly represents a breakthrough in terms of user experience.”

  1. 90% of consumers think every unreleased product is better than what they are using now if marketing is done well. They can’t possibly have a poor perception of it – it isn’t available for testing!

  2. Damn, Own Phone beats iPhone in texting! Obviously the virtual keyboard interface needs work. Clearly, iPhone has left the door open to ZunePhone. Shares plummet, and it’s back to the drawing board. Well, it was a great run, people.

  3. I can see the testing now:
“OK, send a text message on your phone.”
    Finished?”
“Now imagine sending a text message on the new iPhone.”
    “Which did you prefer?”
    “The iPhone.”
    “Good. Next question…”

  4. I think the results are pathetic. Sure the 90% picture looks nice but web browsing and voicemail alone should be far stronger in favor of the iPhone.

Have you ever browsed the web on a Razr?

You can’t understand how much more I fell in love with Steve when he pointed out that shit and called it “baby software.”

If all of those people had a chance to use the iPhone, the results would be even more mind boggling.

  5. Price Price Price!

It’s like asking people if they think the new Ferrari Fiorano drives better than their car…doesn’t mean they’ll plunk the cash down for one (OK so the iPhone to regular phone price difference is a little different than a Fiorano…point still stands ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”grin” style=”border:0;” />

  6. okay this takes the cake. this is exactly the dumbest piece of article/survey/journalism I’ve seen in 3.5 eons.

Why didn’t they ask people to compare their current cars with the Saab Aero X while they were at it?

  7. From the Strategy Analytics web site:

“Strategy Analytics captured consumer responses to video presentations of iPhone features developed by Apple using its panel of advanced mobile device buyers.”

  8. Will you own an iPhone if it costs you $500 to purchase and excluding all other additional monthly fees, taxes, charges, operating costs, and penalties for breaking your 2-year service agreement with AT&T?

    90% of responders said, “No.”

There you have it, the best damn phone no one wants to buy.

  9. “NO GPS”
It uses Google maps which seems pretty good to me.

    “SMALL STORAGE”
4GB is small storage on a phone??

    “LOUSY CAMERA”
How would you know since there aren’t any sample photos?

    “LAME”
    See above…

  10. The chart doesn’t make sense. If you’re comparing the iPhone to “own phone” shouldn’t “own phone” be a standard (i.e. consistent) rating? Like “own phone” is zero and iPhone is either plus or minus that for each feature.

Instead, this is showing “own phone” quality varying as “much better” or “much worse” than what… “own phone”???

  11. Jeff, I believe “Not Now Maybe Later Gator” was making a satirical remark to the slashdot.org article headline which reviewed the original iPod back in 2001, also pointing out how successful the product became, regardless of the review. “No wireless. Less space than a nomad. Lame.” …and the rest is history ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”smile” style=”border:0;” />
