ABC incorrectly bills Woz as ‘The Mac Mastermind’ in ‘Dancing with the Stars’ promo (with video)
Friday, February 27, 2009 - 09:09 AM EST

ABC is incorrectly billing Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak as "The Mac Mastermind" in their "Dancing with the Stars" promo airing nationwide in the U.S.

Direct link to video via YouTube here.

Woz actually created the Apple I and Apple II computers in the mid-1970s, but had little or nothing to do with the development of Apple's Macintosh.

Read more about the creation of the Mac, from the actual "Mac Masterminds" themselves, here.

Woz was the "engineer", Steve was the "snake oil salesman".

Feb 27, 09 - 09:35 am Comment from: Typical Fanboy Overreating

OMG OMG OMG

Let's all write the president of ABC and tell them will never watch their network again unless they fix this earth shattering error..... This really makes me mad. OMG OMG!!!!!!!!!

......except the "snake oil" actually works. ; )

Feb 27, 09 - 09:40 am Comment from: Rike

Macintosh was a result of evolution. No Apple I or II then no Machintosh.

@ncmb
I find your "use of quote" "puzzling". Would you "care to explain"?

Feb 27, 09 - 09:50 am Comment from: redc

It's hype. Nobody really remembers the old Apple computers. But Woz was still the Geek God for the Mac makers. Many admired and wanted to be like him. And in the old Mac project, they did become like their idol.

Feb 27, 09 - 09:53 am Comment from: caddisfly

@RIka: Macintosh was a result of evolution. No Apple I or II then no Machintosh.

ho! ho! ho!.....maybe in the sense of the money made with Apple I or II allowed Apple to eventually build the Mac, but in no other meaningful way.

the evolution branch was to Apple IIe, Apple III, etc - and deadended.

The Mac is a very, very different beast.

Dancing with the stars ≠ to real life (or knowledge of real life events)

Feb 27, 09 - 09:54 am Comment from: GizmoDan

How can this hurt anything? Mac is all most people know about Apple computers. They are appealing to the fact that Mac is cool. That's a good thing.

Feb 27, 09 - 09:56 am Comment from: redc

Oh, and Woz is credited w/ a line that influences Apple design up to now and probably the future. "Never trust a computer you can't throw." Jobs probably added "and sexy!" I can throw an iPhone really far.

Feb 27, 09 - 09:59 am Comment from: MacRaven

I don't mind the error. If it wasn't for either Steve's genius, we wouldn't be typing on these wonderful Mac's today.

Woz laid the foundation for all Apple Computers to come. 'nuff said!

MND is passionate about Apple and the proper attribution of achievements in the history of the company. Yes, a little fanboy-ish, but that's why most of us are here reading this, for fun.

It's almost like attributing MS-DOS to the "brilliance of Ballmer." Heh, so many things wrong in that sentence righ there.

Feb 27, 09 - 10:08 am Comment from: Poofter

Sure, they had to label him something. They couldnt say "The guy who invented the Apple computer 25 years ago, and has since been doing little". And how does he qualify as a "star". Next I'll be seeing Mark Andresson as the Mastermind behind Internet Explorer and the internet" Maybe they should have a show called "Dancing with an irrelevent Geek"

Feb 27, 09 - 10:19 am Comment from: spyinthesky

Pity the Wright Brothers arn't alive, they could have been introduced as the inventors of the Jumbo jet, or Charles Babbage the creator of the super computer. Actually I feel most sorry for the Stone age guy who invented the wheel, just imagine his potential introduction, surely the show would have seriously overrun.

Do you really think the marketing person knows anything about this?

Feb 27, 09 - 10:45 am Comment from: DLMeyer

Talk about getting your panties in a wad over nothing! Oh. Sure. Woz was all but out the door by the time the Macintosh was gestating. We don't know if he made any contribution in the earliest phases (Lisa) at all but we do know he made no significant contributions in the later stages. And ... so what?
I'd guess that half of all Mac users are not aware of the actual history, here. And, NON-Mac users? Do you think one in ten knows enough to question the claim? Are you that over-focused? This will slip by 90% of the audience without a ripple. Quitcher bitchin.

I pointed this out at least a week ago in a previous thread:

"I always cringe when I see promotions for this show on TV. They dub Woz the "Mac Mastermind" when he had very little to do, in actuality, with the Macintosh (or any Macintosh for that matter). Yes, he was basically the reason Apple had anything to sell in the early days, but beyond that his contributions to the Macintosh weren't all that important (if there were any)."

I would like to emphasize that I don't think it is a big deal at all. I merely pointed it out as an issue of correctness. They did have to introduce him in some way of course, though "Apple mastermind" would have been more appropriate, but admittedly not as smooth as "Mac mastermind".

Danicing with the Stars????????

And while we're at, you'll notice that ABC writes it as "dancing with the stars" wink

You know, like iPod "Touch"and Mac "Mini" wink

@Mac"Advocate"

"I" was wondering about "that too."

Woz was the "engineer", Steve was the "snake oil salesman". —ncmb

Excuse me? I believe it was Steve Jobs who went on to build an illustrious career while Woz futzed around doing basically nothing all these years. Dancing with the Stars? Give me a break!

Feb 27, 09 - 12:08 pm Comment from: The SteenMachine

You would think that ABC would run the intro past Woz himself, just to check appropriateness.

And if they did do that, and Woz still gave the green light, Wow.

But like others said, this is harmless to the typical DWTS viewer.

Feb 27, 09 - 12:32 pm Comment from: Sarasota

Woz also was the developer of Apple's first floppy drives.

And this is why you cannot believe anything you hear, see or read in the media. If such simple, verifiable facts are wrong, what about the rest?

The blinding glare from the top of his head?

We always forget to mention the Lisa.

Feb 28, 09 - 12:28 pm Comment from: British Mac Head

It'd be sick if Steve Jobs watched the show during his time off.

I have a lot of respect for Woz, the fact he made a few million and then decided to go into teaching to do his bit to help inspire a new generation of electronics engineers it admirable. I'm sure if I had his cash I would just retire and partay...

Feb 28, 09 - 01:46 pm Comment from: MacFhearghaile

There are many Apple master minds, Woz was the first and many have followed. CBS is not known for its media journalism, they will say anything need to increase the viewing of their show "Dancing with the stars" which has very few stars and gets a negative 10 on my scale of shows that I will watch, but that's just my opinion. One needs to remember that research shows the mental age of the average TV viewer is 11 years old.

I gotta say, I think this actually sucks really hard. I love Woz, for what he was, which was the genius that designed my first computer, and Apple II+.

But let's face it, the guy is a giant dork. About the dorkiest-dork possible. And I do think it tarnishes the Mac brand a bit to have him referred to as the "Mac Mastermind". And on Dancing with the stars no less. Let me take that back, to the uninitiated, this could tarnish the Mac brand a LOT.

Same thing with his bio he wrote a few years ago. Fucking "iWoz". WTF? Nothing remotely "i" had Woz's fingerprints anywhere near it. Not surprised at all Jobs didn't want to write a forward.

What would have been wrong with calling his bio, I dunno, "Woz" ? That is a great name that he's been called affectionately by for years. But no, the guy has NOTHING whatsoever to do with the product pipeline anymore, and still milks his association with CURRENT-day Apple as much as possible.

"Co-founder of Apple Computer" would have been a very simple and appropriate title to refer to him for this show.
