“The biggest reason I try to avoid covering the company is the community of rabid Apple fanatics,” Malone writes. “When you are in the mood for it, they can be fun — in a nasty sort of way. It’s sort of like bear-baiting: A dirty, little secret in the computer media is that if you want to goose your readership or spike the traffic to your Web site, just say something negative about Apple Computer.”
Malone then, yet again, vents his usual, personal insecurity complex with Steve Jobs (Malone’s unoriginal and tedious freak show act) and then goes on to ask, “Given the current stock option backdating scandal at Apple, and Steve Jobs’ possible participation in it, what happens if he, like other executives in similar predicaments at other companies, has to resign from Apple Inc.? …Can the Cult of Apple survive the loss of the Cult of Steve?”

Michael S. Malone, who grew up in the same neighborhood and went to the same school as Steve Jobs, has obviously been obliterated by Jobs’ shadow for his entire life. That obliteration will continue ad infinitum, as Malone, at least subconsciously, seems to comprehend with evident pain. That media outlets pay Malone to inflict the agony of his personal insignificance upon their readership is unexplainable, beyond the fact that he’s employing the Dvorak Formula in a weak attempt to generate traffic, as Malone freely admits in his article.
We’re having a party in here and Malone stands outside in the rain trapped behind the velvet rope of his ignorance and/or inability to enjoy anything with which Steve Jobs is involved. It’s sad. The poor bastard has been reduced to dreaming of Steve Jobs’ downfall. We could’ve ended the previous sentence after “been,” but, alas, Malone never was in the first place.
Most Mac users have been forced to use Windows at school/work. The converse is not true for most Windows PC sufferers. Most of us Mac users know both platforms, but because many of us want to help people who don’t know any better to minimize their frustration and become more productive with their time, we’re supposedly crazy cultists who worship Steve Jobs? We used Macs for the decade that Steve Jobs had nothing to do with Apple and we helped people recognize the superiority of Macs during all those years, too. How would Malone explain that fact?
We can’t speak for the entire cult of rabid Apple fanatics, but we are not fans of Steve Jobs or Apple for any other reason than that they tend to offer superior — often vastly superior — products than their competition.

After reading the article, I thought it was good. I quote, “But these days, Apple has regained its place as a dominant player in personal computers. Mr. Malone does not understand how using Apple software and hardware after being forced to use a PC and Windows will give people, “a moment of clairity” which leads to a life changing decision not to go back to Windows, ever…
The reason we like and respect Mr. Jobs is that he creates new and exciting things which make my computer experience even better. Mr. Malone seems to be jealous of this fact since all he makes bird cage filler.
As for backdating of options, if the courts find criminal intent and convict Mr. Jobs,
then he will take his punishment and thrive, ie Martha Steward. The media continues to be judge and jury only because the stock price keeps going up.
My life changed in 1984 when the Mac was introduced and I have been an Apple dealer for most of my business life. This year will prove that I was right all along.

You know what might really help writers like this?
List all the Apple mistakes…freely admit them… make it clear to people like this that Apple and it’s user base comprehend that Apple is not perfect…just BETTER at some very significant things. Are PC’s usable machines? Who would be foolish enough to say no? It’s just that the underlying philosophy and design execution are so flawed in Windows that it makes them harder to use, less intuitive, and more prone to attack (and hopefull less so with Vista).
I’ve been using computers going back to the late 70’s and there has never been so thoughtfully assembled and so productivity oriented an operating system as OS X (wait till you see Leopard…it’s a game changer)…
But even the most ARDENT Apple fans have to admit that there have been some mistakes…

In all honesty, the GeoPort wasn’t that bad an idea except a) it was just another Apple idea that was ahead of its time, b) it was an Apple idea that didn’t gain any external traction because of vested interests and c) it was (unlike FireWire) completely without any standardised de juré (IEEE) or de facto (trade body) support.
Eventually, of course, there was nothing that GeoPort could do that USB couldn’t do significantly better.

It’s not up to Malone, the media, or the public in general to decide if Steve Jobs is forced to resign. It’s up to the shareholders and board of directors. The last time I checked, he was more popular than ever with Apple’s shareholders and board. Apple has never been more focused and successful than it is right now.
At some point Steve Jobs himself may want to step down and do something different. It will be his decision. But if anything, this so-called “scandal” will more likely encourage him to stay in his safe and secure Apple position longer.
And now, back on the main subject…
I’ve now decided to be quite reasonable with the Stockholm Syndrome Sufferers; if any of the people in my orbit (either friends or penniless employees of my “commercial” customers) start talking to me about new machines, they are given the simple advice that – if they wish to continue getting free advice and support – they can either buy a Macintosh or start paying with all my commercial <strike>suckers</strike> customers.
No heavy-handed sales tactics, no long diatribes on the evils of using an operating system put together by an infinite number of code-monkeys working for a geologically significant period of time on an infinite number of shitty little boxes, no enforced prayer sessions whilst facing the warm end of San Francisco Bay.
Instead, just a simple challenge: want to continue receiving pro bono computing support, buy a Mac. Want to continue using Windows – get your credit card out, because – as I’m 44 and only have another 25 years or so before I pop my clogs – why should I pay for your monumental inability to differentiate cost and value?

Ok, I am getting ready to make the switch to mac because I do believe it is a superior product and I’m not into gamming anymore. There is only one thing that bothers me…the mac fanatics. I read things like this and I think to myself, Man I don’t want to be like this!! The MDN “Take” on news stories that make even the most trivial criticisim to apple products or Steve Jobs and most of the comments on this site just prove Malone’s point. Seriously, listen to yourselves. I truely believe that if someone video taped Steve Jobs eating babies, you guys would somehow defend him!! I congratulate everyone here for standing by the product that you love, but please stop the venomous remarks because hurting your cause. You can make much more powerful statements by simply stating your opinions in a polite and respective mannor. Reality: the quality of Apple’s stuff has been on the steady decline since Steve put Intel inside the computer line up. The iPod is NOT superior quality, in fact, it won’t do a lot of what many other portable players will do and its forced limitations are frustating.
Not only are the products NO LONGER SUPERIOR, the number of problems are now typical of what MSoft offers in its software and what Dell, Sony, Toshiba, HP, and others put out.
Here’s the difference and the only REAL difference: Lord Steve P. T. Barnum Jobs is a MASTER HUCKSTER! His genius, if you insist on using that word to describe him, is his ability to cause otherwise normal, intelligent, and savvy consumers to lose all perspective, all control of their powers of common sense, all reasoning, and all of the normal, healthy skepticism when it comes to falling for a slick promotion of a really cute product.
That’s it. That’s all there is except for what remains a marginal edge in favor of Apple – by the end of this year, that too will have disappeared behind the hordes of Chinese assemblers now working overtime for the MASTER HUCKSTER!

I assume your “get your Mac” comments are directed at Bryan, not me. I’ve been using Macs exclusively since 1988.
I don’t think the behaviour of louts at a football game is the right model for how to advocate or evangelize for Apple. Football fans aren’t proselytizing, they’re being boors for the home team. If the visitors’ fans are at the game, woe be unto them.
It’s also not “all in good fun” when you provoke open-ended mass email assaults on someone for publishing their opinion. That’s crazy vigilantism.

As a gadget freak I have always loved technical toys. I started with T. I., Commodore moved to Apple II to publish a music mag, then brought an IBM for my home more than ten years ago. A year ago I purchased a dual G5 Mac.
Like you I have always hated fanatics of any kind. They never get it right and will even lie to sell their point. My best friend went the way of Macs and he was always in my face about how stupid I was to put up with the PC drawbacks. Let’s face it. I would tell him these are machines and not a religion which Mac fanatics can’t get a grasp of.
As a Mac and PC user I will tell you that both have their applications that they excel in. Macs excel in the more artistic applications. I say this with a footnote. I am associated with some wonderful artists in all realms who chiefly use PCs. They do things like cartooning, garment artwork (T-shirts and the like), recording, and graphics.
I manage two all female Rock groups and you will find that the music industry comprises of Macs in the back and PCs running the front office. Recordings, Disk making and the actual album art is for the most part done on Macs. The Movie industry (Disney, Lucas, Pixar) is done on Macs. The PCs run the front office. You have to ask yourself why? If Macs are so great why run both? (Yes, the same question applies to PCs).
Now I am the brunt of new jokes as to why I have both. I love them both is why. Macs are different and fun because of it. All of my music related jobs are done quicker on the Mac but not necessarily better except for maybe the music end of it. I find in my experience that Mac is better.
In short (too late huh?) My advise is to buy your Mac. I guarantee you will love it. With the advent of Boot Camp (a free app) or store bought Parallels that lets you run PC software on your Mac natively I would say it is a better buy. You see, if you are not comfortable with your Mac you can make it a PC. Kewl huh?

I am a Mac fan. I love the computers. I have only been on a Mac for about a year, but I find it very easy and fast. I love this machine. I am not however a Mac maniac.
As far as Steve Jobs goes, lets just say I have personal reason to know, that he is one of the biggest jerks on planet earth. That does not change how much I like his companies products. He obviously surrounds himself with talented people and gives them the ability to think outside the box. In a word “different.” I have not met him personally, yet. Nor do I want to. Long before he was Steve Jobs the Apple guy he was a brilliant, smart, escentric jerk. My relatives have known him and Wazniak (I do not know if that is the correct spelling). Steve Jobs has personally hurt them, some emotionally, others even more than emotionally. The guy is personally a jerk. He is sometimes borderline evil. I do not say this lightly, but if you know him and what he is you know this to be true. I pray that Jesus is working on his heart.
The new version of Windows, Vista. I have never used it…yet. I am sure that I will try it sometime. I expect it to be a good operating system. I do not care if they copied OSX. I do not care if they have a bunch of things on them just like Apple has done. I will most likely purchase a new iMac and load Vista either by Boot Camp or Parallels. Microsoft is fine with this and so is Apple. This is where I think Apple is a great computer because it can run both OS’es. That in my mind is the perfect computer!!
Those of you on these posts complaining about the Windoze people are just as crazy as the people who get in your face with religion. No one will be converted that way! I guess this is why some people have been turned off by Mac enthusiasts. They are so quick to tell you how wrong you are to use a PC. It is better on a Mac, it is easier on a Mac, a Mac never crashes! This is what most of them say. I can personally say that Macs are much better about crashing. They seem to “just work”, but I have had to wait for a multicolored pinwheel to spin for minutes on end. I have had to force quit a few applications. On occassion things caused my pinwheel to start up no matter what and I (gasp!) had to cut the machine off and RESTART. These things do happen on a Mac, but with a whole lot less frequency than the PC’s I have used. The Apple seems less affected buy things like lock ups, but they are not perfect. In many ways better than XP, but not perfect. It seems strange to me that so many would critisize Vista and have not even tried it. I would like to get a copy tommorrow and see how it runs on my Mac.
The guy who wrote the article slamming Steve Jobs may not be jealous of him, he may just know the man better than you or I and cannot stand him personally. Cannot stand to support his products or help pay his hard earned money knowing that Jobs will be supported by his own dollars. He himslef may have gotten a little out of control with some of his statements, he should not let his dislike of someone cloud his judgement of the product. Do not slam Malone for not liking Jobs. I do not like what I have seen from him either.
