Access hidden prefs to fix Safari 4 Public Beta’s tabs, blue load bar, and more with free utility
Monday, March 16, 2009 - 05:02 PM EDT

By popular demand (we keep getting emails on the subject, indicating that Apple has some work to do - as we've maintained since day one), we're reposting the following article from earlier this month:

swoon dot net software has released Safari 4 Buddy, a free Mac OS X utility that enables the ability to change several hidden preferences in the Safari 4 Public Beta web browser, such as: moving the Tab Bar, reverting the Progress Style indicator, disabling Google Suggest and Top Sites and more.

Safari 4 Buddy is a simple GUI front end for several Terminal command that many of us have been using since the release of Safai 4 Public Beta.

More info and download link here.

MacDailyNews Note: As with the Terminal command, after changing the "Use Progress Style Load Indicator" to "No" with Safari 4 Buddy and restarting Safari for the changes to take effect, go to View>Customize Toolbar and you will find the newly enabled "Stop/Reload" button for your Toolbar.

I like Safari 4 beta the way it is. I love the google suggest feature but I would like to see again the blue progress bar and a quick bottom for dashboard selection.

Give me instead a free utility to go back to the Clinton years (BJs in the Oval office, and a BUDGET SURPLUS).

As for Safari, I am happy with the new changes.

Activating the blue progess bar slows down page loading.
I like Safari 4 overall, but it needs a way to delete google searches, without deleting your whole history.

@Always Right,

Yes, let's do that. Go back to the years of Spindler, Amelio, Performa/Centris, Copland, Mac OS 7.5, QuickDraw GX, PowerBook 5300, etc etc....

What happened to the Apple with public software (beta or not) that didn't need fixing?

Mar 16, 09 - 06:25 pm Comment from: Watchful

There's nothing wrong with Safari 4 Beta! It's funny because I don't "always" agree with MDN when they support Apple whole heartedly. But now that they actually think Apple made a mistake I think it's great!

You mean the budget surplus thanks to the dotbomb years?

I'm not finding a problem with these changes at all. It took a little while but life has not suffered the cataclysmic deterioration that the world is obviously suffering.

The PROGRESS bar in any of the web browsers doesn't give any indication of how much progress has been achieved or how long it is going to take to complete.

At least the 'spinning' wheel tells you that there is activity.

Thanks SafariBuddy! After using Safari 4 beta for a couple of weeks, I really missed the Stop/Reload button, and still prefer the blue loading bar and tabs below.

But, no way am I turning off the Top Sites feature! I love that!

Allready well known since the 3rd day after the beta's release!!!!! Hey! You're a little late here!

Mar 17, 09 - 04:05 am Comment from: Macaday

The progress bar is an inaccurate reflection of load times and it is OBTRUSIVE and DISTRACTING!

Anyone feeling the need to have that massive blue indicator is missing the point. It's just sooo 2006. IE8 will most likely have it. So move on - or Apple will move on without you...just like it has several times before!

for those of you who don't like change, there is always windows.

Tabs use an otherwise wasted top-bar, i welcome the extra cm on my browser using a notebook

You need to see an inaccurate blue loading bar? Are you kidding me, grow up.

Reload a page is still there for the moron above, it's the little round arrow in the address bar..

MDN spits the dummy and you stupid sheep follow everything they say as usual. Go to windows like all the other halfwits.

I switched mine to get the blue loading bar back because I like seeing it.... Accurate or not I dont care the rest I do like.. I'm not afraid of change.. unlike some people. The tabs up top give more room.. so why revert back to taking up more space?

I still think it's mildly amusing how even small changes to apps throws Apple right into the firestorm of horrified criticism -- we should be grateful Apple even has the willingness to innovate at all, otherwise we'd still be in the 90s tech wise (just as Windows users are...).

As a concession, I suppose Apple could make it an option in the preference pane, as they did with the translucent menu bar.

Mar 17, 09 - 08:19 pm Comment from: Rob Korte

OK. I just tested a theory (which many of you probably already figured out, but I'm kinda slow). I used Safari Buddy to turn off the Top Sites feature. I had no idea just how much that feature was slowing Safari down. After turning it off, new pages load way faster!

Perhaps today's newer, faster Macs with lots of RAM don't experience the overall Safari sluggishness with Top Sites running, but I've found a HUGE difference in speed with my 2005 model iMac G5 2.0GHz with 1GB RAM.
