Adium 1.1 released
Monday, August 13, 2007 - 04:51 PM EST

Adium 1.1 is now available (released yesterday) and includes the following new abilities:

• You can arrange your tabs on any side of the message view, not just the bottom. Tabs are arranged vertically when you put them on the left or right edge of the window and horizontally when you put them on the top or bottom.
• Tabs handle overflow better by presenting a chevron (») menu, just like toolbars do.
• Tabs are now spring-loaded, so that if you drag something to a tab that isn't active, it will activate, so that you can position the thing you're dragging precisely within the inputline.
• You can have each tab display the number of unread messages, if any.

Adium 1.1 also offers the following:
• Prettier
• Faster
• Changes in the contact list, such as people coming online and going offline, animate smoothly.
• The contact list's ability to hide like the Dock at the edge of the screen has been improved.
• A new type of AdiumXtra, the menu bar icon xtra, has been created to let you customize the appearance of Adiumy in your menu bar; you can download AdiumMenuBarIcons packs from AdiumXtras.com.
• Buzz on Yahoo! and nudge on MSN are now fully supported.
• AIM DirectConnect should be more reliable and less memory intensive; it is now automatically initiated as needed.
• You can now import accounts and chat transcripts from iChat.
• Adium now warns you if you run Adium from the disk image. This will especially benefit new Mac users who aren't accustomed to working with disk images.
• Right-to-left text is handled property on MSN.

No audio? No video? PIECE OF CRAAAP!

Aug 13, 07 - 04:14 pm Comment from: skeeter

man, why doesn't every app warn you when you're running it off the disk image?

"No audio? No video? PIECE OF CRAAAP!"

It's open source, so why don't you show us all how easy it is to add those features.

"• You can arrange your tabs on any side of the message view, not just the bottom. Tabs are arranged vertically when you put them on the left or right edge of the window and horizontally when you put them on the top or bottom.

FINALLY! Those two things were my top two pet peeves about Adium. Now if only they could fix the transfer speed...

adium rocks! definitely the best IM client

Aug 13, 07 - 04:23 pm Comment from: Bud

Here! Here! Who ever can manage to integrate all these services into an IM cross-app application, integrated w/audio and video will come out on top. skype for some telephony, ichat for video, yahoo IM and MSN because some people can't or won't switch or understand the benefits - it's a mess... audium has some interesting features but it misses the mark.

Version 1.1 has a bug that causes it to crash on launch for some users. Version 1.1.1 should be available shortly. See the blog here for details: http://www.adiumx.com/blog/

"Version 1.1 has a bug that causes it to crash on launch for some users. Version 1.1.1 should be available shortly."

That's the Mac for you.. it sucks.

Aug 13, 07 - 05:52 pm Comment from: Me in LA

@macsuxx: no, you sux. You sux bigtime. How pathetic is it that you and your sore right-hand hang out and troll a Mac site?

Very pathetic.

MDN: purpose - as in you have NO purpose macsuxx (ass)

Aug 13, 07 - 05:57 pm Comment from: Ahhh

People like macsuxx are just pleasant reminders that we still need to work on bettering our gene pool.

Aug 13, 07 - 06:22 pm Comment from: Dan

MDN: Please don't assume that we know what a program is or does. And don't assume that we want to follow every link. Your goal is to become all the news we need without going elsewhere. But if I don't know what Adium is, your article would not tell me enough. Thanks.

Aug 13, 07 - 07:30 pm Comment from: Sniper Mac

Oh, so just because it's open source, it can't have great features like audio and video? That's why open source will never be the rule, they can't compete, something is always missing. That's why nobody uses Linux.

Why not include audio and video and charge 10 dollars for it?

Aug 13, 07 - 07:31 pm Comment from: Twisted Mac Freak

But is it glossy?
It must be glossy.

Aug 14, 07 - 03:15 am Comment from: Crabapple

@ TMF, Glossy? why not Flossy! as in iCandy Flossy or
Lossy! as in Lossless Lossy.
Nay, chuck in Bossy! as in The Boss Nose best which leads me to, Nossy as in don't stick your nose in my Glossy Bossness (business)!
I don't like nose prints on my iCandy Flossy Glossy!!!:-)

Aug 14, 07 - 05:26 am Comment from: Dolita

@ Twisted Mac Freak:
why not translucent, glossy, and black?
then it'll become as ugly as the new iMac.

Aug 14, 07 - 06:20 am Comment from: Twisted Mac Freak

To Crabapple & Dolita:
Nice! We do need a Poetry Corner. Although, Iamb leaning towards the Green Eggs & Ham style from Crabapple.

Aug 14, 07 - 09:56 am Comment from: BustingTheSkullsOfIdiots

The big change in this version is that they dropped support for Panther. That annoys me.

Aug 14, 07 - 09:57 am Comment from: BustingTheSkullsOfIdiots

As for those complaining about the lack of voice and video, you show just how immature you are. If you knew anything about multi-protocol IM clients, you'd know how difficult these things are to get up and going. Stop whining and do something about it, shut up, or go on demonstrating to the whole world what a 12-year-old you really are.

Aug 14, 07 - 02:25 pm Comment from: AntEater

I wish these auto-updaters in various applications would check to see of the OS supports the application. I downloaded the update last night and installed but couldn't get it to work. Checked the requirements and 10.3.x is no longer supported. Bummer. That said, Adium is my favourite IM app next to Pidgin itself.

Aug 14, 07 - 10:00 pm Comment from: Less is More

What's sad is the first thing kids do on their Macs is download msn to chat with their buddies. Even worse, they want to run pc apps for I-dunno-what. As someone said, Kids is [sic] the future, man. Watch 'em!
