Adobe plans public beta of Adobe Creative Suite 3; move could boost pro Mac sales

“Sales of Apple Computer’s professional Mac line could receive a shot in the arm later this month if Adobe Systems proceeds with plans to release an early public beta of its Creative Suite 3.0 software bundle,” Kasper Jade reports for AppleInsider.

“Thus far, graphics professionals have been slow to adopt the Intel-based Mac Pro workstations introduced by Apple this summer — a trend which both Apple and industry analysts have attributed to the lack of an Intel native version of Creative Suite for the Mac OS X operating system,” Jade reports.

Jade reports, “For its part, Adobe has gone on record in stating that native Intel Mac support of its most popular graphics applications, such as Photoshop and Illustrator, will have to wait until the Spring 2007 release of Creative Suite 3.”

“People familiar with Adobe’s software strategy say the company plans to whet the appetites of its approximately 3 million creative professional customers with a public beta of Creative Suite 3.0 some time this month,” Jade reports. “The beta would be available to all current Creative Suite 2.0 license holders in the form of a Universal Binary that would run natively on both PowerPC and Intel-based Macs, those people say.”

Jade reports, “So far, Adobe has offered very little information on the features, components and pricing og the upcoming release, which is referenced internally under the code-named “Banana Split.” However, AppleInsider has reported previously that Dreamweaver, which was acquired as part of Adobe’s acquisition of Macromedia last year, will replace GoLive as the primary web authoring application in the release. Similarly, Macromedia’s Fireworks will take on the role of Adobe’s Image Ready application.”

  1. Jim sez: “I wish we didn’t rely on Adobe so much, they are crap.”

Look, it’s easy to criticize Adobe because their attention has been on the Windows platform, but they aren’t crap. Postscript, Illustrator, Photoshop and InDesign are the core of digital art production. I am just hoping that Apple’s latest moves are a wake up call to Adobe’s management that the Mac put Adobe on the map.

  2. I don’t see graphics and photo professionals running out to replace their stable copy of PhotoShop for a beta.

Nothing more frustrating than having your project disappear and seeing the “Application has Unexpectedly Quit” message appear.

Aperture on the other hand saves every click you make automatically. If someone kicks the plug, you haven’t lost anything.

  3. It’s not necessarily Adobe helping Apple. By limiting the public beta availability to CS2 license holders, they’re enticing people to get CS2. As much as CS2 people waiting to buy Mac Pros pending the release of CS3, there are current Mac Pro owners who’re waiting to upgrade from CS. I just hope CS3 has some compelling features that justify an upgrade.

  4. Other Steve, I don’t think they will either. But they will still download it and try it out with something they’re not worried about if the app quits. I know I’ll be taking a look at it.

MW: Huge party, come Spring ’07…

  5. I wish they’d offer a bundle that is JUST Fireworks and Dreamweaver and leave out the rest of the stuff. Then those long-time Macromedia users who have never needed PhotoShop, like me, could just only get what we need. I, for one, really don’t want or need PhotoShop and hate the idea of having to pay for such a large program that will go totally unused.

    Here’s to hoping.
