Adobe to deliver TV shows via Adobe AIR
Thursday, April 03, 2008 - 04:08 PM EST

"Adobe Systems Inc. has started public trials of software that will deliver ad-supported subscriptions to TV programs, including CBS Corp's 'CSI,' 'Survivor' and 'Big Brother,' a company official said on Thursday," Jim Finkle reports for Reuters.

"The software maker has established partnerships with media companies including CBS and MTV-parent Viacom Inc., which will provide their programming through Adobe Media Player [Adobe AIR], said Adobe Senior Director of Product Marketing Mark Randall," Finkle reports.

The rest of the very brief article is here.

MacDailyNews Note: Adobe AIR (Adobe Integrated Runtime) 1.0 is a free runtime environment that lets developers use web technologies such as Adobe Flash, Adobe Flex, HTML and Ajax, to build rich Internet applications that deploy to the desktop and run across operating systems. It is currently available for Macintosh and Windows. More info and download link here.

OK, so whats up with this? A subscription that delivers ads with a TV show..... OK, doesn't TV do that already? And will the ad based mean banner and side bar ads in addition to the commercials that come with the program? So what is so great about this that TiVO or a Dish DVR can't kick the crap out of?

MDN MW Program!

I hate Adobe. They suck! I'll never use it.

Apr 03, 08 - 03:40 pm Comment from: Spudly

This is why Photoshop & CS are so screwed up and slow moving... Adobe lost track of their core competency... :-(

Simple if its ad-based and free, you can lower that Dish Network Package and save $$$

@Quad Core

I have been using my computer as my TV for almost a year now. I plug it into my entertainment center and watch free ad supported shows online. It's great. No need to remember to record anything, and if I want to start watching a new show I can watch it from the beginning with no trouble. And by beginning, I mean Episode 001. Lets see your TiVo go back in time and record Lost Episode 001 in High Def.

TiVo is already dead. Cable and Sat are already dead. They just don't know it yet.

ElderNorm,
I hope you meant BluRay or else you're in for a big surprise.

Apr 03, 08 - 04:23 pm Comment from: Cubert

Everybody jumping in on the digital media bandwagon.

Apr 03, 08 - 04:27 pm Comment from: Jubei

Can't you see what Adobe is up to? Photoshop, Flash and now TV Shows... They want what Apple has and will us the MS SOP to break them.

Apr 03, 08 - 07:09 pm Comment from: me

From now on "everythingAIR"

You need commercials so you can go to the bathroom.

Apr 03, 08 - 10:35 pm Comment from: Macintosh

What is Adobe doing? I really wish they would fix all the bugs that have plagued Illustrator for the last decade or so.

I've got to say they did a great job creating the PDF format, but even Acrobat Pro sucks and is full of bugs.

Are they pissed at Steve Jobs for talking sh*t about Flash for the iPhone? Or creating Final Cut and other video related software that kicked their ass? I would imagine they are.

And, of all things, Adobe is releasing a 64 bit version of CS for Windows before Mac?? Apple probably has some more software up their sleeve that Adobe is afraid of...

Apr 03, 08 - 11:05 pm Comment from: Crabs

@Fred

That would be amazing. Why would you even need cable/satellite again after that? You have everything online. Omg, that'd be amazing. I would love it.

Apr 03, 08 - 11:10 pm Comment from: Crabs

But uh...I went to Adobe's site, and it seems like the AIR is more of a Dashboard clone than anything else. What does it have to do with TV? I'm so confused...

Apr 03, 08 - 11:50 pm Comment from: Crabs

Nevermind. I get it. Not enough content yet. They need Scrubs.

Apr 04, 08 - 03:50 am Comment from: almux

Competition is always a good thing for the consumers... But, simultaneously one can reconsider the position of Adobe and think that our Macs require some other application that Adobe's... Time for Apple to make a Pages Pro to replace InDesign...

Apr 04, 08 - 07:43 am Comment from: Mo

@Crabs Great handle man! Cow and Chicken was awesome...there has to be a Piles around here somewhere.

Sounds great Adobe, except for the ads and stinking Flash video. I hope they change their mind and support ISO standard RTSP to stream video in Flash. It was pretty cool when they decided to support MPEG 4 (H264) video and then they ruin it by only letting it stream on their proprietary server. Stinking.

Apr 04, 08 - 10:38 am Comment from: Anim8me2

Relax, this is just a clueless tech writer not understanding what is going on.
Adobe is not going to deliver anything. They have just entered into an agreement that says the media companies will USE Air as a platform. That is all.

Jeez, I hate when these people don't understand what they are writing about!

Adobe Air sounds a lot like mud slinging....

I remember when Adobe bought pagemaker, a reviewer wrote something like "Aldus Manutius was a venetian scholar, typographer, printer and publisher. Adobe is a mud hut.
