Al Gore’s three 30-inch Apple Cinema HD Displays
Sunday, May 20, 2007 - 11:34 AM EST

TIME Magazine has published a photo essay, "Al Gore's American Life," which shows former U.S. Vice President and current Apple Inc. Board of Directors member Al Gore's personal computer setup which features no less than three 30-inch Apple Cinema HD Displays which are each capable of 2560 x 1600 resolution:

See the full image, which includes Gore's very cluttered office, here.

MacDailyNews Take: Obviously, Gore enjoys (screen) real estate, but you'd think that massive monitor setup would help Gore achieve something much closer to a paperless office (see full image). Think of the trees, Al. Although we're hardly ones to talk, we hereby nominate Gore for TLC's "Clean Sweep" TV program.

...and I care why?

May 20, 07 - 10:38 am Comment from: Mac Ed

GREEDY!!!! Save the environment my ass... imagine the energy over a year on those things.... lol! just jealous.

May 20, 07 - 10:44 am Comment from: Bandit Bill

Pretty messy desk, and terrible ergonomics. Barely room to move the mouse.

May 20, 07 - 10:46 am Comment from: Arnold Ziffel

Nukeman,

Stop the nonsense about Gore claiming he invented the internets.

That's been debunked now for years, so drop the idiocy.

May 20, 07 - 10:48 am Comment from: librium

Man think of all the Global Warming those things cause, we're all gonna die!!!!

May 20, 07 - 10:52 am Comment from: RC

And think of the electricity he's burning by having that kind of setup. Talk about being a hypocrite. Think about your carbon footprint there Al....

May 20, 07 - 10:56 am Comment from: Toby Belch

I love Sundays!

May 20, 07 - 11:00 am Comment from: TowerTone

OK, that's just funny to me.
Three 30" screens, and he STILL can't see the big picture!!! LOL

May 20, 07 - 11:02 am Comment from: ldrhawke

I could be mistaken, but I think those are three 24" displays; sitting here looking my 24" display and the relative size of the key board in relation to the screen size in the photo.

He uses 100% GREEN energy. No fossil fuels powering those babies. :D

May 20, 07 - 11:16 am Comment from: Qka

Stop the nonsense about Gore claiming he invented the internets.

Yeah - In 1997, I saw Bill Gates claim that Microsoft invented it.

May 20, 07 - 11:17 am Comment from: Ken

Now that is a nice set up! Even a big screen TV on the wall.

Notice that Al does recycle - an old door in the large picture hsd been used for big board paper. The mass of paper will be "incoming" mail, reports, etc. Just shows how much goes through his office.

I like the picture though. My office, with only one small 23" display can be just as bad at times!

May 20, 07 - 11:18 am Comment from: montex

Apple doesn't make a stand-alone 24" monitor. They have 20", 23" and 30". Their only 24" screen is inside the 24" iMac. Thought you should know...

May 20, 07 - 11:19 am Comment from: iSpot-a-Hypocrite

AL GORE, CONTRIBUTING SIGNIFICANTLY TO GLOBAL WARMING

Will you just look at all that excessive heat and electricty he's using. One 30" monitor is good enough for most professionals who need the extra screen real estate, most get by with a smaller sceen just fine.

But NOOOO, our supposed champion of the ecology is using THREE MASSIVE MONITORS when G.W Bush only uses a MacBookPro with a 17" screen.

Then just look at the CLUTTER OF AL GORES OFFICE. Obvious signs of a disorganized mind and a forgetful one, as everything, including what's on his computer screen needs to remain in constant vision or it's "out of sight, out of mind".

"Mr.President Gore, did you sign that bill about sending the troops to stop the looting and killing in post hurricane New Orleans?"

Al Gore - "Oh yea, I forgot, let me see, it's in one of these piles somewhere"

People like to bash GW Bush, and in some cases I agree with them, but this picture revels a ton of information about Al Gore and it's not all good.

May 20, 07 - 11:24 am Comment from: Crapola

what a crappy setup. 3 x 30" is nice don't get me wrong, but look at the crappy desk with mouse space. i think it sucks

May 20, 07 - 11:28 am Comment from: R

He isn't using fossil fuels to run those. They've been retooled to run on smug.

You can't handle the screens!"

@iSpot-a-Hypocrite

Bush uses a computer?!! That's got to be the surprise of the day!!

As for your opinion about Gore, well, you know what they say . . . . if you can't handle the message, just attack the messenger.

May 20, 07 - 12:01 pm Comment from: No carbon footprint for Al.

Al Gore's office powered only by wind energy from hot air ejected from his mouth and combusted methane spewed from his large ass.

May 20, 07 - 12:04 pm Comment from: Pope

It must to be nice to be a director at Apple, call up and say I want 3-30" monitors, top of the line powerMac and enought video cards to power these babies up. And oh yah, overnight them to me.

May 20, 07 - 12:07 pm Comment from: Combitron

You ain't seen my cluttered office.

Lots of clutter, no screens.

No plants either.

May 20, 07 - 12:13 pm Comment from: No Squirt For You

"top of the line powerMac"

Mac Pro, maybe?

May 20, 07 - 12:15 pm Comment from: ron

Looks very gory to me. I'd rather see Rush's set-up

May 20, 07 - 12:17 pm Comment from: @iSpot

What you don't see is the GREEN ENVY energy being tapped off the internet to run all those 30" monitors

If that runs out, then there is always the interns using their treadmills just on the other side of the office wall to tap off of.

Sure the interns each consume $30 a day in oil needed to produce the food they eat to run the treadmills, but that's not on Al Gores head, he's using green energy, the interns just need to starve instead to save the enviroment.

And think of the electricity he's burning by having that kind of setup. Talk about being a hypocrite. Think about your carbon footprint there Al....

And talk about idiotic people thinking that by minimizing your ...monitor real estate you can save the environment.

Get a hint, idiots, it's the big industries that destroy the environment (petrol, chemicals, plastics, de-forestation etc), not your monitor or your fridge.

May 20, 07 - 12:32 pm Comment from: Richard

All you anti-Gore people, just think who you voted for instead! What a bunch of maroons! The worst president in history. All you guys sit down and shut up and let Gore and company save your worthless lives.

May 20, 07 - 12:49 pm Comment from: i voted nader

mr conversationist lives in a 20 room mansion with 2k plus electric bills.

from the photo it seems you have recently had the discipline to stay away from the fridge.

May 20, 07 - 12:49 pm Comment from: Size

Well, comparing the size of his head to that of the monitors, I'd say that each of those screens must be about 15 feet across.

May 20, 07 - 12:51 pm Comment from: Chris

Who says that because someone didn't vote Gore, they voted Bush? Ever heard of the other parties?

May 20, 07 - 12:58 pm Comment from: One guy from Finland

Damn! I only have two :( Now I need to buy two more

May 20, 07 - 01:00 pm Comment from: R

He paid for all that stuff using his family's OIL money from Occidental Petroleum. Hippocrite much?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Occidental_Petroleum#Gore_Family_Ties

May 20, 07 - 01:01 pm Comment from: R

Yes, I meant Hippo.

May 20, 07 - 01:01 pm Comment from: Richard

Re: Who says that because someone didn't vote Gore, they voted Bush? Ever heard of the other parties?

A vote for Nader was a vote for Bush. In a two-party system where power cannot be shared (as in a Parliamentary system), voting for a third party is denying a vote to whatever side best reflects your views. So all of you "Me? I never voted for Bush" folks, if you didn't vote for Gore, then you're responsible for the most inept, corrupt and dangerous administration in American history. It's becoming harder and harder to find those Bush guys, except for the stupid ones, of course... the vast majority.

May 20, 07 - 01:04 pm Comment from: Jeff

"Get a hint, idiots, it's the big industries that destroy the environment (petrol, chemicals, plastics, de-forestation etc), not your monitor or your fridge."

Then why is Gore always on people's case about their cars and houses and whatever? He uses huge amounts of fuel in his vehicles and planes. Oh, but he buys carbon offsets...from his own company from profits he made on an oil company in which he owns stock...

Gore is the idiot...

May 20, 07 - 01:09 pm Comment from: keep it cool hu?

i wish a had three of those in my office, here in europe its too dificult to afford one 30 inch, but now 3,thats awsome... .

May 20, 07 - 01:10 pm Comment from: Richard

Jeff,

You're right, pollution is more than an industrial problem.

As for all that disinformation that's been spewed out like bird crap all over the right wing press, well, consider the source. If you believe it, maybe you're the idiot.

May 20, 07 - 01:15 pm Comment from: Always Right

Comparing BUSH to GORE?

HA HA HA HA!

http://politicalhumor.about.com/library/blbushism-tribal.htm

"President" BUSH is an IDIOT, in the classic sense of the word.
If this is not obvious to you, than you too are ALSO an idiot.
This has nothing to do with conservatism (neither does BUSH), by the way.

As I noted, (along with most of the rest of the world). G.W. Bush is obviously stupid.
My own Son observed that when he was 10!

May 20, 07 - 01:18 pm Comment from: Richard

Comparing Bush to Gore HA Ha etc.

As I said, the few who admit to voting for the worst president in history are the dumb ones.

If Bush's father had not been president, or rich, he would have wound up working in a garage somewhere. Wanna pass that... uhm... thingy... wrench... you know, the three-quarter... uhm, no the left hand one...

May 20, 07 - 01:20 pm Comment from: botox

If he could use just one monitor, that would cut down “global warming” by two third! Brah ha ha ha!

May 20, 07 - 01:21 pm Comment from: Richard

Always Right, my apology. I misinterpreted your comments.

Unlike Bush or Bushies, I can admit my mistakes...

May 20, 07 - 01:26 pm Comment from: Big Al

Al Gore buys carbon credits from a company he owns that completely covers his carbon footprint. He even buys credits for all the carbon dioxide he exhales and the methane that comes out the other end. He needs a lot of carbon credits, as you can imagine, but, believe me, he's got it covered.

I followed his example and started my own carbon trading company. I now live environmentally guilt free.

It is easy being green. When your company is hopelessly in carbon credit bankruptcy, you simply fold it and start another company. After all, the world is full of greenhouse heating scams.

May 20, 07 - 01:26 pm Comment from: Nashlore

DUH! STUPID LIBERAL

If people begin being wasteful having three huge monitors made of aluminum (high energy to produce from aluminumoxide ore) and plastics (oil) instead of the average size monitor they need, who would you think will produce them? The same companies you critize.

IN CASE YOU MISSED THE POINT

Al Gore is supposed to be this great enviromentalist, but by his actions having three huge monitors he shows he's a worse example to the enviorment than GW Bush is with his MacBookPro.

AL GORE IS A HYPOCRITE

Three monitors and runs nothing but his mouth.

May 20, 07 - 01:41 pm Comment from: Always Right

No problem, Richard.
Yes, I agree, humility is an important aspect of ANYONE'S makeup.
Certainly, promptly admitting when wrong is a VIRTUE.

For instance, were Cheney & Wolfowitz (The MAIN proponents of the Iraq "war", Bush doesn't REALLY now what's going on to admit the invasionb was a mistake, based on the faulty intelligence...

Oh, wait, I forgot.
Actually, they were lying.
Made it up.

May 20, 07 - 01:41 pm Comment from: Hg Wells

Politics aside (I'm not a Democrat), Al Gore has done great things bringing environmental concerns to many, many people. Of course he's using energy as all of us do. But I have no doubt he would want more environmentally friendly alternatives, as I and many people would want. I think having him on Apple's board should have muted the absurd criticisms from environmental groups and I continue to be surprised that it did not. That they would think Gore would stay with a company abusing the environment seems foolish to me. His concern and activism in letting people know what's going on with climate change should be appreciated separately from any differences in politics people may have with him. I do believe that climate change is one of the most serious issues we have. And bees are dying off? What's with that? Gore's done a good job on the environmental front. That, and the envy over his three 30 inch displays, should be the only issue here. Your current president seems to fail in both those areas (environment and 30" Cinema Displays). Gore doesn't appear particularly enamored with politics recently.

May 20, 07 - 01:44 pm Comment from: Always Right

Al Gore NEEDS 3 monitors.

He sees the big picture.

It'd be fun to vote on these.
My favorite? "Tribal Sovereignty", followed by maybe "Nation of Africa".

Most unbelievable?
"Working 3 jobs-uniquely American". (Although it's not funny).

May 20, 07 - 01:59 pm Comment from: montex

Al Gore could live in a shack on the beach and never use electricity again - and it would make absolutely no difference on the causes of global warming. These attacks on his supposed hypocrisy is hypocritical in itself. Gore never said that people must give up using electricity or gasoline. His opponents attack him personally in order to discredit his message.

Won't change anything. The earth will warm, the sea level will rise and those people who blame Al Gore exclusively for global warming will continue to look like fools.
