There is a simple explanation for this - Zune users are thieves.

They're not buying Zunes, they're STEALING them. How else could you explain the fact that despite the ENORMOUS AWESOME COOLNESS of the Zune, no one is buying them? I can only imagine a rash of Zune theft is taking place all over the country RIGHT NOW. People can't wait to save up $250, or to get one for Xmas, so obviously they're knocking over Circuit City and Fry's everywhere to get their fix.

It's amazing that all of Apple's current iPod line beat the highest ranking Zune.

Still to be a bit fair the Zune is a brand new product with no reputation / traction so it isn't surprising that it is flying off the shelves yet.

It will be interesting to see how the players are fairing after 6 months, one all the channels are filled and M$ start advertising it. That will be the test of whether it is a dude.

The question is what will the failure threshold? 100K, 0.5M or 1 M units per quarter. I think they will be lucky to sell 0.5M units this Xmas, probably only 100K.

It would be good if we could get an idea of the relative unit sold numbers for the Amazon site. How many units do you need to sell to get to #17?

This is the main list I've been watching to gauge the Zune's success. It was #5 on the day of its release while the 2G iPod shuffle was at #22. They've virtually switched places.

Also, the 5.5g iPod black (30gb) has been a consistently strong #2 in Electronics overall with the 2g iPod nano silver (2gb) right behind. Can't seem to get past that Canon Powershot.

This really tells the Zune story - fighting for survival amongst Apple's previous generation of iPods and also rans. It is even more impressive for Apple when you realise that Amazon is heavily discounting the highest ranked Sansa (by nearly 50%).

And the Zune by Zune is a classic - nobody wants to be associated with this thing!

I look forward to MDNs story updating this list next week!

Why is the 1GB iPod Shuffle listed at $105.95, when the list price on them is $79?

Nov 20, 06 - 04:09 pm Comment from: Doug

It is now up to 24, but the suprise is that the brown already has 15 used ones for sale, and that white has 7. Early adopters are becoming early sellers!

Nov 20, 06 - 04:16 pm Comment from: T

I'd say that's pretty good. Why is it that Sandisk is pretty popular? Why are they number #2?

Okay, now adjust your search for hard-drive-only players.

1. Apple 30 GB iPod Video Black
2. Apple 80 GB iPod Video Black
3. Apple 30 GB iPod Video White
4. Apple 80 GB iPod Video White
5. Apple 60 GB iPod Video Black (5th Generation)
6. Zune 30 GB Digital Media Player Black
7. Creative Zen Vision:M 30 GB MP3 and Video Player Black
8. Apple 30 GB iPod Video Black (5th Generation)
9. Zune 30 GB Digital Media Player Brown
10. Toshiba MES60VK Gigabeat 60 GB Portable Media Player Black
11. Creative Zen Vision W 30 GB Widescreen Multimedia Player Black
12. Apple 60 GB iPod video White (5th Generation)
13. Apple 30 GB iPod Video White (5th Generation)
14. Creative Zen Vision:M 30 GB MP3 and Video Player (Green)
15. Palm LifeDrive Mobile Manager
16. Zune 30 GB Digital Media Player White
17. Apple 30 GB iPod video U2 Special Edition Black

So Microsoft has two players in the top 10. Of course, Apple has six in the top 10--including the top 5.

Still, not too shabby a showing...

Nov 20, 06 - 04:20 pm Comment from: HotinPlaya

"Guessing" and "Jimbo"

the shuffle ranking is due to Amazon being out of stock at retail $79.99 and they are shipping from "blue parrot " at a premiun of $105.99

if you click on the shuffle you will see a delivery date of Dec.31 from Amazon, to late for Xmas, so yes I am sure floks are buying from Apple direct.''

kinda of neat tho, no delivery until after Xmas, or pay a $36 dollar premiun, and it is still out selling the Zune

http://www.amazon.com/gp/bestsellers/electronics

Nov 20, 06 - 04:22 pm Comment from: ldm

It is clear the Zune is no threat to the iPod. The question now is whether and to what degree it will hurt all those in the "Plays maybe" market. There could be a large switch from Plays for Sure to iPod (Fooled me once, shame on you; fooled me twice, shame on me) as people get fed up.

Nov 20, 06 - 04:27 pm Comment from: ChrissyOne

Doug - I think those early sellers might have been Speculators, like those who buy consoles and resell them for a fortune. OOPS!!! Didn't happen this time! ;P

Nov 20, 06 - 04:37 pm Comment from: Zune Tang

Psychotic rants? Fictional take? I'm afraid you iPod lemmings are the delusional ones. It's a marathon, not a sprint, and Microsoft is in the driver's seat. Once you get a taste of Windows, how can you say no to Zune?

Apple is clearly using their bullying tactics to secure a dominant position in the MP3 player market. I can't imagine what they've got setup with Amazon but you can bet your Zune points the playing field isn't level. Hey Apple, how about playing by the same rules everyone else in the industry does?

I can guarantee you this: Hell will freeze over before your friends in Redmond turn to such funny business. They have confidence in their non-proprietary solutions out in the open market, and they should. Microsoft gives the customer what they want: generous and flexible WiFi, FM and fashionable colors. The iPod will simply wither away and die under the stunning demand for Zune and its awesome features.

Welcome to the Social.

Nov 20, 06 - 04:52 pm Comment from: Steve O

Now the Zune is down to #17

Nov 20, 06 - 04:54 pm Comment from: blucaso

Wow, Universal must have to hire a whole new accounting firm just to keep track of the extra $48 in "protection money" that's rolling in... LOL

The "top items on Amazon" list that Richard Nixon put up is very telling.... the black Zune is currently #49 OVERALL on Amazon. The Brown and white aren't even in the top 100!

Or to put it another way, at this moment, even the "popular" Zune (the black one) is being outsold by:

- Philips DVP642 DivX-Certified Progressive-Scan DVD Player
- Logitech QuickCam Communicate STX
- Panasonic KX-TG5633B 5.8 GHz FHSS GigaRange Digital Cordless Answering System with Three Handsets

Not exactly a screamin' hot gift item there...

And contrary to your thought process, DogGone - the Zune has had more pre-launch publicity than any recent product in memory. If there wasn't a huge pent-up demand, that bodes very poorly for the old turd. I'm not saying with a serious software and firmware update, some good word of mouth (good luck with that!), etc. it couldn't be a "sleeper" - but in general, it's kind of like movie releases.

The iPod is like "Cars", and the Zune is like "Pluto Nash". One was promoted heavily, is from an established and well-liked star. The other was also heavily promoted, but the star is kind of a has-been and probably didn't want to be associated with the embarrassment.

Nov 20, 06 - 05:00 pm Comment from: critic

I'm just amazed that the 30gig iPod is the best seller and not one of the nanos.

Nov 20, 06 - 05:02 pm Comment from: max

Note - Amazon haven't got any shuffles to sell yet - that will sink it further,

Also, if this is like most other 'charts' the distribution of sales is not linear, 1st place is streets ahead of 5th and miles ahead of 10th. At 17th ZUNE is nowhere.

Nov 20, 06 - 05:06 pm Comment from: SJR

Umm, Microsoft might want to try to compete with SanDisk first before they even bother worrying about Apple. SanDisk currently has three mp3 players on Amazon's list that are outselling the top selling Zune...

Nov 20, 06 - 05:09 pm Comment from: Jimbo von Winskinheimer

Writing style makes it obvious: Zune Tang and Sputnik are one and the same. I'd put money on this. Also willing to bet that this troll really is that - a Mac/iPod user that is trolling for trouble in this forum. They continue to come back and spout the MS line, and they know that they are full of shit. I guess he gets his kicks out of getting a rise from Mac fans.

Maybe I spoke too soon. Amazon updated the list and it says the 5.5G iPod black (30gb) is now #1 in Electronics.

This list is sooooooo out of date.
Now #49.
Like A Rock.

And kids it's worse than that. Apple has direct channels too (including customer engraving available free through the apple online store).

What I still don't get is the zune fanbois. MS copied virtually everything the ipod is criticized for. Replaceable battery? Choice of music stores/open ecosystem? Portable music library?

But in the real world, I'm happy to see a couple of SanDisk models outselling the Zune as well.

Nov 20, 06 - 05:21 pm Comment from: HotinPlaya

critic, I don't know for sure, but I bet if you combined the sales of the "nano", they would out sale the 30gb and 80gb

just that there are so many "nano" models

@Zune Tang:

"Once you get a taste of Windows, how can you say no to Zune?"

um....because i don't like the taste of VOMIT.

i will say that i fidgeted with a demo Zune at Target the other day. not bad interface, hate the buttons in the center (they should have not made it look like a wheel) but overall not a bad experience. still, for me:
- too big
- large screen nice but not impressive. if bigger == better, than a future iPod with larger screen == Zune killer?
- no 80 GB model. i needs my space.
- needs to be able to act as portable HD so i can xfer files from work to home and back. it doesn't.
- Zune Marketplace. blecch. 'nuff said.

nothing there that would make me turn from using an iPod.

Thanks a bunch Franco!!! ........ Now I have to wipe of my screen!
