Analyst: 62% of Apple’s initial 5-million-unit iPad 2 production run to consist of 3G models

“After briefing AppleInsider exclusively last month on the components expected to find their way into the new iPads, analyst Ming-Chi Kuo of Concord Securities has provide additional details on the five million unit supply Apple is reportedly amassing prior to its launch in the coming months,” Daniel Eran Dilger and Kasper Jade report for AppelInsider.

“As previously reported, Apple is expected to offer its second-gen iPad in three versions: a WiFi only model, a GSM/UMTS version for AT&T and most other carriers globally, and a CDMA/EVDO model for Verizon (and possibly other CDMA carriers in the future),” Dilger and Jade report. “The naming convention for these three models is said to be K93, K94 and K95, respectively.”

Dilger and Jade report, “In speaking to AppleInsider, Kuo said his checks in the Far East indicate production figures of 38 percent for the K93 WiFi model, 46 percent of the K46 3G model, and 16 percent for the Verizon-compatible K95 CDMA version. This indicates that Apple apparently expects most iPad 2 users will opt for 3G models…”

  1. very interesting…

I wondered if I would regret my choice when I bought the 16 gb, wifi only model. But In all honesty, I would probably do the base model again if I were buying today..

So far, I’ve never missed having 3G, hotels always have wifi, and storage hasn’t been an issue because I use netflix streaming for movies and I keep my music collection on my iPhone..

My main usese for the iPad is for: apps, internet, reading and photos… and 16 GB is more than enough so far..

  2. Crazy. After almost a year of owning my iPad, I’ve never used 3G once. I completely regret purchasing the 3G model, because for $30 less money, I could have had twice as much storage space instead, which I end up needing every day. I will never buy a 3G iPad again. WIFI only, from this point forward.

  3. Maybe I just use things like maps a lot more, but I’ll never ever go back to not having 3G or some other always-connected device. You know when the last time I fiddle around trying to get on the coffee shop WiFi? Yeah, neither do it. Once you always have it on, you forget that such a thing as connecting is ever an issue until you go way up into the hills.

  4. I’m going to try that post again, this time with proofreading…

  5. We have both wireless and 3G and love both ….. Use 3G on trips and when we go out otherwise wireless works fine for wife as she only uses in house ….

I only have the $15 month plan as I just don’t use enough band width … had unlimited at $30 but went to the $15 month when I realized I did not need …

  6. @ Why 3G?

So you don’t have to put out your smartphone, turn it on (hope it’s not low on battery power), and set it up to be a “WiFi hot spot,” just to use your iPad for a few minutes.
