“An analyst monitoring the holiday sales says the iPad is becoming ‘the Mac of the masses,'” Philip Elmer-DeWitt reports for Fortune.
Gene Munster’s team at Piper Jaffray counted Apple’s sales. P.E.D. reports, “From a total of seven person-hours spent in a variety of Apple stores, Munster’s team found [that] Macs were leaving the stores at the rate of 8.2 units per hour per store… ‘Most notable in our observations,’ he writes, ‘we noticed that the iPad is gaining traction (driven by lower price vs. the Mac) among demographics in which the Mac has historically not been successful. The bottom line is that Apple’s addressable market is expanding with the iPad. The iPad, Munster concludes, is becoming ‘the Mac of the masses.'”

When I can read them
8.8 iPads per hour? That’s a serous slowdown from earlier in the year, when they were selling 20 iPads per hour.
Randy’s right. Constant problems with the iPhone MDN app:
* No data at start (intermittant)
* WILL NOT go into landscape mode, EVER
Hey Monkey Boy, “Must be a Rounding Error”
@MacBill….. read the headline. 8.8 per hour PER RETAIL STORE. I don’t know exactly how many retails stores there are but thats a good number. That doesn’t account for online sales either which I’m sure were much more brisk.
@ JB Tipton
In landscape mode now for first time in. . . .
The iPad MDN app has some serious problems; and that’s if you can get it to fully load at all. The iPhone app is slightly better. You’re better off going to the website directly : (
8.8 x 300 (stores)=2640 per hour x 8 operating hours (conservative)=21120 per day x 28 days per month = 591, 360.
x 10 operating hours = 739,200.
No online or Authorized re-sellers factored in.
There are 10x the number of points of sale now for iPads.
Yep I bought the .2 Mac and the .8 iPad. ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”wink” style=”border:0;” />
