Analyst: Apple could sell 12 million ‘iPhones’ next year
Monday, September 11, 2006 - 11:58 AM EST

"Apple Computer could sell as many as 12 million iPod-enabled cell phones next year, potentially boosting earnings by as much as 10 percent above current Wall Street estimates, one analyst says," AppleInsider reports.

AppleInsider reports, "While he does not expect Apple to announce a cell phone at its Showtime event this week, PiperJaffray analyst Gene Munster told clients on Monday that he continues to expect the company will ship an 'iPhone' within the next 4 to 6 months. 'That said, we have not seen any concrete evidence that the product is near completion or launch,' Munster wrote in a research note."

AppleInsider reports, "Assuming Apple ships an iPhone early next year, at the Macworld 2007 trade show or a special event shortly thereafter, Munster expect the company will sell between 8 million 12 million units in the full calendar year... 'Assuming 1.2 iPods per owner and assuming 33 percent of these higher average selling price iPod buyers buy an iPhone in 2007, we estimate approximately 10 million iPhones could be sold.' The analyst maintains an "Outperform" rating on shares of Apple with a price target of $99."

dang.. just got a new phone

Sep 11, 06 - 11:02 am Comment from: me too

Hell, >>>I<<< can sell 12 million iPhones...!

Just make them already :D

Sep 11, 06 - 11:03 am Comment from: Troll

They'll probably sell more. Look at how many iPods they sold Q4 last year alone... That is, if they make an "iPhone" at all.

Sep 11, 06 - 11:05 am Comment from: Spark

8-12 million phone in a year? Where is the perspective? How many phones do Nokia, Motorola or Sony sell each year?

Sep 11, 06 - 11:10 am Comment from: JEG

You got to love analysts that start making predictions and projections on products that don't exist.

Sep 11, 06 - 11:10 am Comment from: Tommy Boy

I just bought a new phone. An iPhone would have to be awfully compelling to get me to purchase (as well as not run on a third-rate network).

Sep 11, 06 - 11:13 am Comment from: ipodG8TR

Not so fast. Many individuals are locked into expensive-to-break contracts with current wireless providers. That is something Apple can improve upon.

Sep 11, 06 - 11:14 am Comment from: Norm e.

Hmmmmm,
I have a suggestion!!!
Assuming that we are getting cool new iPods, how about a plug in adapter into the top of the iPod that converts it into a telephone.

That way, you buy and enjoy an iPod. Later, if you want it to act like a cell phone, you get an adapter that just plugs into it and makes it a full up phone with all the features. the plug in could be from your old service so its your same number and already works with your existing plan.

Everyone wins. Well, we do, Apple does, and the phone companies get to make a buck or two. grin

I'm an analyst! I'm an analyst!

I expect, if they are making it, that Apple will sell 32 million Apple iTeleporters in the last quarter of 2007 for the Christmas rush.

I'm an analyst! I'm an analyst!

(how's about a product before such predictions)

Sep 11, 06 - 11:24 am Comment from: carlo

this has to be the longest running rumor in apple history.

i just hope apple delivers something that works and changes peoples beliefs as to what a portable communications device can do.

i mean they have to have been working on this idea since before the intel switch, the intel switch might have made it all possible. IBM chips in a small lightweight device? Noway!!

Im sure that devices like the one were all hoping for had as much if not more of an influence as to why apple switched to intel.

Sep 11, 06 - 11:25 am Comment from: Joe the Farmer

I predict Apple will sell 1 million G5 Powerbooks by this time next year. Oh, and 3 million iTablets. I have no concrete evidence that Apple is developing these products or that they will even be released by this time next year, yet I feel confident that my predictions will hold. Buy Apple stock now!

Sep 11, 06 - 11:30 am Comment from: doPi

all Apple needs to capture a huge share of the market is

1 sell it unlocked

2 make thinner than all others

3 make it ichat / skype compatible

If Apple does that the stock could double

Sep 11, 06 - 11:38 am Comment from: BuriedCaesar

JEG - totally agree. Then again, it could be a conspiracy on their part to then turn around and discredit or trash Apple whenever they DON'T do what the analysts have said they expected. It's utter hogwash all around.

Apple hasn't even acknowledged this iPhone exists. Don't you need to have something to sell before anyone can begin making predictions about it? Apparently not.

I could sell 15 million iPod-related virtual headphone sets this year. Let's see if that happens, too.

Sep 11, 06 - 11:40 am Comment from: Torrak!

That phone's connector have to got an ethernet adapter, so we, when we are airport offlimit can surf the net much faster than by bluetooth grin
Off course, it have to sync perfectly with whatever iSync have to offer

Sep 11, 06 - 11:41 am Comment from: M.X.N.T.4.1

Maybe apple are attempting something new. Convince enough people (starting with analysts) that an iPhone is coming and eventually they'll believe it actually exists and then you can start selling them empty boxes. Kind of an Emperor's new clothers type dealio.

Sep 11, 06 - 11:45 am Comment from: Gregg Thurman

12 million phones is awfully conservative. The annual market for new phones exceeds 1 Billion. IDC's market share chart shows 6 manufacturers, then a category called 'Others'. 'Others' holds 17% of the total market. Apple would certainly be included in that category, at least until its share surpassed BenQ/Siemen's (the #6 firm) share of 3.2%.

If Apple garnered 10% of the 'Other' category (something I think Apple could do if for no other reason than the popularity of the iPod), it would have sold 17,000,000 hand sets. That's 5 million more than Munster estimates.

But looking at Apple's recent hand held device patent filing, the implications there strongly suggest a handset that is controlled by a touch sensitive screen with a limited number of fixed buttons. I think this would have significant appeal to a cell phone user. Add to that, the fact that the patent covers multi-functionality. So an Apple device could include a music player, a video player, a cell phone, a PDA, a GPS system, a camera and several other functions, each operated by touch sensitive controls that appear only when you want them.

Could Apple surpass BenQ's 3.2% share in the first year? I think it is entirely possible. That would amount to about 35 million hand sets, well over Munster's 12 million estimate.

Sep 11, 06 - 11:53 am Comment from: LordRobin

Microsoft is famous for its vaporware announcements. Apple just keeps its corporate mouth shut and let the analysts come up with the vaporware. Seriously, the iPhone is the rumor that won't die.

Sep 11, 06 - 11:59 am Comment from: Akido

DIE RUMOR DIE!!!

(unless of course, it's true, in which case, I'm first in line wink

Sep 11, 06 - 11:59 am Comment from: Marzorati

To Spark: About 800 million mobile phones sold 2005. Third of them by Nokia. Q2 2006 Nokia sold 78,4 million, of which 18,3 million smartphones or "converged devices". 12 million iPhones will be quite good but not impossible.

Sep 11, 06 - 12:12 pm Comment from: Eh... not so much

I would love an Apple smartphone. I have the Treo 600, Palm part is great, phone not so much. But I have a lot of software I've been using for years in Palm format, and I just bought a MacBook, so I can't go Windows Mobile.

What if Apple bought Palm? That would be excellent!

Sep 11, 06 - 12:14 pm Comment from: Mr. Reeee

If Apple is smart, they'll either set up their own phone network (unlikely) OR they'll simply sell unlocked phones. Let's hope they're quad-band.

If any of the rumor sites are even partially correct, could this be the birth of Son of Newton and OS X?

Phone, iPod and PDA all in one unit?
Now THAT would make it very intriguing indeed.

I just bought a new unlocked Sony Ericsson K510i phone, but if Apple offers something sufficiently compelling, I'll eBay or craigslist the damn phone AND my Palm TX in a New York minute!

Maybe not, but it sure is fun thinking about all the possibilities!
But, of course BATTERY LIFE is key!

MDN Magic Word: QUALITY... as in that's the bottom line!

Sep 11, 06 - 12:44 pm Comment from: leodavinci

I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for an Apple "iPhone." There's just too many variables outside of Apple's control to make this really do-able for Apple. The phone companies all want you to buy "their" phones; buy more expensive music from their "their" music service; and/or they cripple/limit phone features.

Would you deal with "business partners" like this?

Sep 11, 06 - 12:56 pm Comment from: Torrak!

Wait a minute, why not just make the iPhone same size/volume as the PC-Card on side side of the PowerBook...?
Slot it in, and it will work as whatever a PC-Card is for, and of course as a modem. Does anyone understand my idea...?

Sep 11, 06 - 01:25 pm Comment from: Rudge

It just illustrates how popular an iPhone would be if Apple ever released one. I love the idea of an iPhone and hope that it would be 100 percent compatible with a Macintosh computer. I also hope that Apple will take their sweet time developing and manufacturing a good product that will beat all of their competition.

If you go by the earlier registered drawings, it looks like it will only be a candy bar device. Too bad. But, if Apple ever made it, you know it would be done with the easiest user interface of all devices.

Why would it bother? It already owns the Newton, which was the best PDA ever made.

First, we need 14 Apple satellites in geosynchronous orbit....

Rudge:

I can talk to my computer without a phone. In fact, we can communicate telepathically. Unfortunately, we're still learning each others language, so we sometimes make a few mistakes. Wait a minute. What's that? Uh, huh. Uh, huh. OK, I get it. Hey, Rugde, my computer wants to know what your favorite band of all time is.
