Analyst: Apple iPhone 3G off to even faster start than expected
Monday, July 14, 2008 - 10:25 AM EST

"Apple Inc. sold 1 million of its new iPhones in the first three days after the handset made its debut, more than double what some analysts anticipated, sending the stock up 3.5 percent," Connie Guglielmo reports for Bloomberg.

"Half of Apple's 187 U.S. retail outlets were sold out as of last night. AT&T Inc., Apple's exclusive U.S. partner, said most of its 2,000 stores were out of supplies. Carriers in the U.K., Germany, Canada and Japan said many shops ran out of the iPhone 3G, which works with speedier third-generation wireless networks, on the first day," Guglielmo reports.

"Piper Jaffray & Co. analyst Gene Munster estimated sales of 425,000 devices in the first three days. He had figured Apple and AT&T sold a combined 225,000 in the U.S., even after a failure in Apple's system meant some buyers had to finish the activation at home," Guglielmo reports. "Today, Munster said sales overseas outdid his expectations, boosting Cupertino, California-based Apple's results. 'International really hit it out of the park,' Munster said today in an interview with Bloomberg Television. 'This is definitely a faster start than we anticipated.'"

"Munster, who is based in Minneapolis and recommends buying Apple shares, said he may increase his forecast for 4.08 million iPhone sales this quarter," Guglielmo reports.

Duh. One million in three days. How many in three months?

Jul 14, 08 - 09:34 am Comment from: erk

have not gotten mine yet, they ran out here :(

I know many people who decided to not fight the rush and will be picking a few up shortly when the restocking happens

Jul 14, 08 - 09:34 am Comment from: Randian

But, but, but, but . . . the latest rollout wasn't PERFECT! How can AAPL shares be up when even ONE person had trouble activating his device (among the unprecedented million who tried)? And what about MobileMe?! Its introduction wasn't flawless EITHER! And what about all the besotted Windows users whose dust-ridden copies of IE 6 don't work? Won't someone think of them? After all, if THEY'RE not happy, how can ANYONE ELSE be happy?

Personally, I'm breaking out the hair shirts and cat-o'-nine-tails for the rest of the month. It's going to be a self-loathing fortnight, at the very least.

@Not bill

Well, we should expect to see a sharp drop in the coming weekends. Just like movies, video games, Video game consoles, and everything else that has a fan following the initial spike at the beginning is not sustainable. Nor is it expected to be, and that's fine. I would expect to see a hundred thousand or so a week for the remainder of the quarter. When christmas comes, that will spike up again. But iPhones are not iPods. People can't just dump (hopefully recycle or sell to someone else) their 1 year old $500 phone that easily.

Jul 14, 08 - 09:38 am Comment from: Demon

Well I'm just looking for the magic closing prices of over $200.00 a share so we can break the psychological price barrier that the market has with AAPL trade price.

Jul 14, 08 - 09:40 am Comment from: Spark

I think we'll see a 32GB iPhone for Xmas. I can hold out 'til then. I wonder how many iPhones can be cranked out each week?

Jul 14, 08 - 09:42 am Comment from: HMCIV

Jim Cramer and Gary Krakow are going to have to work overtime to spin this one. Some initial pitches they could work off of:

- Every iPhone sold brings Steve Jobs closer to death
- Greenpeace says the Apps Store kills manatees
- No keyboard
- Represents a choking hazard for infants with REALLY WIDE mouths
- Video games sold on app store not attractive to business users.

Jul 14, 08 - 09:45 am Comment from: blue Dream

Let's not forget that currently, only 22 countries have an iPhone, and I think by years end it will be close to 70 countries, including China.

Jul 14, 08 - 09:53 am Comment from: MidWest Mac

And if AT&T;would get a few more towers up here in Nebraska, they'd have two more sold.

When you're smack dab in a CDMA hotbed, it really feels like you're on the outside looking in . . . and drooling all the while.

Jul 14, 08 - 10:00 am Comment from: MacSheikh

@ Spark

I think so too. I'm holding out till then, but its really hard! Lol!

Jul 14, 08 - 10:01 am Comment from: STFU whiners

Only a million? Didnt Steve Jobs say that they would sell 10 million in 2008?
This is a DISASTER.

Apple should close down and give the cash back to Dell, or whoever loaned them $100 billion 10 years ago to survive.

Some people didnt get their iPhones to work within 15 minutes.
Apple should be sued.

The iPhone doesnt have voice-activated calling - thats a DISASTER.

Apple should be closed down.

The iPhone wont last anyway - when Microsoft bring out the Zune phone, its game over.

Apple cant make a phone - they are a computer co.

Think of the children - the iPhone is dangerous to children if they blend it and eat it.

DONT keep your iPhone near a blender!
iPhones blend easier than Nokias. The FDA should ban iPhones.

The iPhone is helping Iran to build a nuclear bomb that will destroy Philadelphia!
Oh. Thats not a bad thing. Hmmm.

Jul 14, 08 - 10:04 am Comment from: @ midwest mac

'a couple of towers' - well, your two iPhones will soon pay for those towers, eh?

Jul 14, 08 - 10:09 am Comment from: KenC

I can't wait to get mine. I was surprised that the Map app on my old EDGE iPhone has the cell triangulation circle actually moving as you drive around. That's far more useful. I didn't hear anything about that.

Jul 14, 08 - 10:13 am Comment from: Macintosh

As much as I want one, I'll wait until I can cruise in and out of the Apple store. There is an Apple Store right next to my lunch spot so I can keep an eye on things. Software 2.0 and the App Store will keep me busy for a few more days...

Jul 14, 08 - 10:24 am Comment from: Jeff

Rogers sold out now they will think they can have there way with us any time.

It would be interesting to see how many took the new $30 for 6GB as apposed to the iPhone plans.

Jul 14, 08 - 10:28 am Comment from: Rob

Now anal-ysts will up their "expectations" to ridiculusly high numbers and then punish Apple for not meeting them

You can't win with those a-holes

Jul 14, 08 - 10:29 am Comment from: Guest

In a week they'll match the Zune's sales. smile

Jul 14, 08 - 10:40 am Comment from: MidWest Mac

@ @Midwest Mac

Yes. I really believe those two phones will pay for those towers. Seriously. I do. Those towers can't be more than a couple of hundred dollars each.

Which is a good thing, too, because I'm sure my family is probably the only one that will buy any iPhones.

Jul 14, 08 - 10:44 am Comment from: Swing Geezer

Rogers are idiots.

Each of the Calgary locations received about 25 iPhones. No wonder they were sold out before Noon on Friday. It was (and still is a joke)! The staff had no training! They know nothing abut the phone. They still think of it as a lame Blackberry (no keyboard) One guy tried to switch me!

But I'm not bitter!

Saturday 5:00pm Oklahoma City store.
Got in line, was walking out of the mall with two phones in 1 hour 45 minutes. 8-)

Jul 14, 08 - 10:48 am Comment from: fastmemory

Apple says 1m in "sales" in the first three days. A couple of people last week says Apple considers a "sale" when the product is loaded on a truck in China, leaving the factory, NOT a retail transaction between the company and the ultimate consumer.

Are there 1m 3G iPhones in the hands of consumers, who have in their possession a sales or credit card receipt, or is the 1m figure a combination of actual sales and shipments from China?

Don't get me wrong; I hope Apple sells 1 billion, but exactly what is a "sale" to Apple?

Jul 14, 08 - 11:05 am Comment from: shen

"he may increase his forecast for 4.08 million iPhone sales this quarter"

hrmm, so 6 million 1st gen and 4.08 this quarter.....

no, i don't think they are going to make their 10 million goal. that is too bad.... :-(

(and no, math is not my strong subject)

Jul 14, 08 - 01:28 pm Comment from: Digital Mercenary

Apple does not consider it a sale until the end user has paid for it and received it. The people who last week said that Apple considered it a "sale" when it was on the truck in China are Microsoft shills. Apple has made it very clear for years that a sale is not a sale until the end user has the product. The exception is that online orders are considered a sale as soon as the product ships to the customer.

Jul 14, 08 - 02:52 pm Comment from: ElderNorm

@Digital Mercenary,

Ref "The people who last week said that Apple considered it a "sale" when it was on the truck in China are Microsoft shills"

Ever notice that MS shills / trolls describe how Microsoft does business and then uses that description to "paint" other companies. It makes coming up with a description ----easy----. LOL
