Analyst Wu: Apple ‘iPhone’ finally ready for production
Tuesday, September 05, 2006 - 11:55 AM EDT

"Analysts for American Technology Research on Tuesday encourage investors to get aggressive in purchasing shares of Apple Computer prior to the launch of the company's much rumored iPod cell phone, which it says is likely to revolutionize the handset industry," AppleInsider reports. "'Our research indicates that an Apple-designed smart phone has moved from concept to prototype and recently has progressed to near completion as a production unit,' analyst Shaw Wu told clients in a research note on Tuesday. 'We believe this smart phone has been in development for over 12 months and has overcome substantial challenges including design, interference, battery life and other technical glitches.'"

AppleInsider reports, "Pointing to the existing smart phone market, Wu noted the challenges companies face when trying to produce a converged product of high quality. However, he said Apple chief executive Steve Jobs 'is finally satisfied with the end product Apple engineers have produced in terms of quality and the right blend of cell phone and portable media player.'"

AppleInsider reports, "Given Jobs' previous track record, the analyst said he has the utmost confidence the Apple branded cell phone, which he says will conform to a sleek candy bar form factor, will meet the highest of standards with 'no exception.'"

"'Clearly, we would like to share more detail as we have conducted extensive work on the product pipeline, but for now, here is what we will convey,' Wu wrote. 'The design will be an iPod nano-like candy bar form factor and come in three colors (we are not certain of the exact colors but we suspect black, white and platinum, similar to Apple's current color scheme of iPods and Macs),'" AppleInsider reports.

To be offered over what Network? With Apple become a virtual varrier as highly rumored a year ago?

I'd love to drop (kick) my Sprint phone in favor of the Apple device!

Sep 05, 06 - 12:03 pm Comment from: chocolate beat apple

that Chocolate cell phone is sweet. It is exactly like what I would expect from apple.

Granted its GUI is probably the same Gui we have seen for years. This is where Apple's cell phone will blow them all out of the water. The GUI.

But anyway that Chocolate phone is very nice looking

Sep 05, 06 - 12:07 pm Comment from: gagravaar

Me. Want. This. Now.

Same size and look as a nano, with Mail, iCal, iChat, Address Book, iPhoto, iTunes integration and an iSight.

Problem is, I'll get mugged about 3 seconds after taking a call. Still, it's gonna be worth it.

Sep 05, 06 - 12:09 pm Comment from: wall street guy

the Verizon Chocolate might look nice but it is works like crap

so bad i spent 2 hours at a Verizon store to return it

stay away

Sep 05, 06 - 12:09 pm Comment from: bwilson

Sweet, my Cingular contract just ended and I've been holding out renewing waiting for this piece!

Sep 05, 06 - 12:12 pm Comment from: me

I totally agree that the Chocolate is cool looking but could you imagine selecting song 1728 of your 200 song collection on it? That is where the Apple Click Wheel destroys all other MP3 players and will in turn dominate the phone market (much nicer for finding contacts too!)

Sep 05, 06 - 12:12 pm Comment from: Some Guy

While I think this is awesome news, I'm wondering how Apple would handle cell phone repairs. The genius bars at the stores are packed as it is.

Sep 05, 06 - 12:13 pm Comment from: mudflapper

I will pay Cingular anything to get out of my contract. I don't think I've ever wanted any gadget more than I want an iPhone. It's bordering on obsession, I tell you.

MDN Magic Word: bill. That's just scary!

Sep 05, 06 - 12:13 pm Comment from: Zislovas

Isn't all this a pure speculation? If there is ABSOLUTELY no information about upcoming Apple products, how does the guy gets the information? Telepathy? Or did he make Steve so drunk that he started crying about design challenges ´, including interface, battery? And if the poor guy would know anything worthy, he'd be suied by Apple sooner than we can read this nonsence. Remember Asteroid?

Anyway, I think this is just a Chinese cousin of Enderle trying to make some money, so he can buy more weed.

ARrgh! these freaken analysts piss me off!
They make the wildest claims.
They should say at the end of each sentance "and I base this on no real evidence whatsoever.
THERES NO IPHONE ON SEPT 12
THINK ABOUT IT
THE INVITATION SAYS "its showtime" hmm maybe movies on itms duh

they really need to make claims that make sense. An Iphone will come, just be patient

Sep 05, 06 - 12:25 pm Comment from: JEG

This would be soooo cool. I've fullfilled my contract obligations with Sprint so I can change to a new provider any time now.

Having said this I'm still skeptical about Apple releasing an phone.

Sep 05, 06 - 12:29 pm Comment from: mactechy

I have a Chocolate phone and it was so bad I gave it to my 12 year old son. He tried it and became so frustrated he asked for his old Firefly back. It has to be one of the worst tech purchases I've ever made. Verizon is just out to rip people off via the $2 song sales. Funny thing is that the device/software is so bad that few people will even bother.

Verizon get out of the software business...you suck at it.

Sep 05, 06 - 12:30 pm Comment from: Mr. Peabody

Is it gonna work with Verizonwireless? Duh no.

Its weird, I'm so excited and so pissed off at the same time.

Sep 05, 06 - 12:38 pm Comment from: Gregg Thurman

I'd love to drop (kick) my Sprint phone in favor of the Apple device!

I'm on the verge of drop kicking Sprint in favor of anybody.

Sep 05, 06 - 12:38 pm Comment from: Tommy Boy

That candy bar form factor sucks major donkey ass. If Apple release a phone in that form factor it will be universally panned.

Sep 05, 06 - 12:40 pm Comment from: pog

If the iPhone comes we'll know about it months before we can buy it. All phones need to get FCC approval, and the submissions to the FCC are public, so it will show up on a site like phonescoop before its released.

Sep 05, 06 - 12:41 pm Comment from: huh?

Mr. Peabody: I have a hunch it's going to work only with Cingular, and maybe T-Mobile, on account of the GSM technology both networks use, and which happens to be the network of choice internationally, with a few exceptions. If AAPL wants the market to be more than the US, they gotta go with GSM (SIM card) technology. Plus, that lets folks who already have a GSM phone simply put their old SIM card into their new iPhone, and voila, instant update.

Sep 05, 06 - 12:42 pm Comment from: me

I disagree with Tommy Boy - I like the candbar much more than the flip design...and it gives more screen realestate too which is critical for a PDA/phone.

Sep 05, 06 - 12:47 pm Comment from: pog

Tommy Boy: I feel the same way about flip phones.

Sep 05, 06 - 12:48 pm Comment from: tt

Everyone knows that Apples are better for you than chocolate.

more features, bigger storage, and easier to use too. smile

Sep 05, 06 - 12:54 pm Comment from: ndelc

I don't doubt that they are working on some sort of iPhone device, but I have to agree with what reader "Linux Guy Mac Prodigal Son" (sorry if I butchered your name!) has been suggesting, which is that it won't be an actual phone but some type of iPod that becomes the interface for a phone. That way, they'll do what they're best at, helping the user interface with the info, but they can stay away from having to design the actual phone and perhaps, depending on how it's done, not having to bother with dealing with providers and networks. I believe they will essentially be creating a new market and changing the face of communication as we know it.

Sep 05, 06 - 01:21 pm Comment from: Tempus Fugit

if this turns out to be true and there is a iPhone, i'm gonna be pissed....

i just bought two new phones and got a two year contract w/Verizon a month ago.

on the other hand, it'll be fun watching all the other device makers crap their pants.

All Apple has to do is offer an unlocked GSM phone...
Use whatever network you want.

Use it in other countries.

no muss no fuss.

And another cool feature angle of an ipod phone? It may be able to talk to anyone of the many cars on the road that have begun to offer the ipod connectivity.. perhaps use the speakers for hands-free... play movies on the entertainment system.. many possibilities!

Yes, I believe you're right - That's why the mixed feelings. Believe me, I could get anything except Verizon service in my rural area, I'd use it. All the other cellular providers have the cool technologies. Verizon has coverage... The the hell can't I have both?
