Analyst: Apple on track to sell upwards of 2.8 million Macs this quarter
Monday, August 17, 2009 - 05:11 PM EDT

"Based on U.S. retail sales data released Monday afternoon by the NPD Group, Apple is on track to sell 2.7 to 2.8 million Macs and 9.5 to 10.5 million iPods in its fourth fiscal quarter, according to Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster," Philip Elmer-DeWitt reports for Fortune.

"Mac unit sales came in up 2% year over year in July, which according to Munster implies 3% to 7% growth for the quarter that ends in September — roughly in line with the Street's expectation of 5%," Elmer-DeWitt reports. "'With just one month of data,' writes Munster, 'it is way too early to make a call on the quarter given ~50% of Mac sales in the quarter typically happen in the month of Sept.'"

Elmer-DeWitt reports, "He adds that international sales are growing faster than domestic for both Macs and iPods, which is why he expects reported sales to be slightly higher than NPD's numbers would suggest. He also notes that July 2008 was a particularly good month for the Mac, with unit sales up 43% over July '07, so achieving 2% growth over that is no mean feat."

hopefully, Apple refreshes their iMac line and drop the price as well. I need to replace my wife's Dell pronto.

If Apple sells for more than 3 billion, I will NOT take the Swine Flu vaccine...

What the hell does this have to do with politics?

Aug 17, 09 - 06:05 pm Comment from: MacDave

@ Artist,

Duh, don't you know by now that the topic doesn't have to be political in order for the discussion to swirl down to politics. Palm, meet forehead.

@MacDave

I guess I'll have to be patient

I remember the bad old days of less than 1 million Macs sold per quarter. If they can take it up to 3 eventually, that would be awesome.

These are all real users, too. Macs are not bought for dumb terminals, cash registers, and airport kiosks.

3 million a quarter is an awful lot of new users. Good stuff.

And still virus free! Hazzah!

We don't know about online sales, but it's estimated that about half of all sales at Apple stores are to switchers. If about, say, 35% of Macs being sold are to switchers, that's going to be close to 3,500,000 new users this year alone, figuring 2.5 million per quarter. That's not a "rounding error" Mr. Ballmer.

I attend a major Canadian university with more than 20,000 undergrads. I was there today picking someone up outside the major campus hub and bus terminal. I witnessed 4 people walking out the doors with brand-new boxed MBPs in 15 minutes! That's INSANE for a long-time Mac user like me who got used to the days of the mid-late 90's when Apple was a mere shadow of its current self. If they are doing business like that here (no Apple store in town) I can't imagine what its like in the major U.S. cities with multiple Apple stores. I'm predicting well over 3M Macs sold on the college rush, and I can't wait to see those glowing Apples in the lecture theaters this fall.

Hmmmm,

A refresh for laptops, minis, and iMacs is due pretty much as soon as the Intel 32nm mobile chips are in the pipeline. I may be optimistic, but I think that could be about the same time as the new iPods, and maybe just a bit after Snow Leopard.
The PERFECT STORM:
New mobile chips, new SSDs and Snow Leopard. . . . Sounds like a typical Apple Autumn.

And what about the new mobile chips designed by Apple?

Can you say four million?
