“Apple Computer, which recently released its first mobile handset to manufacturing, is working on a second model that will incorporate messaging capabilities, according to one Wall Street analyst,” Katie Marsal reports for AppleInsider.
“‘From our understanding, it will leverage off existing iChat software that runs on Macs,’ American Technology Research analyst Shaw Wu told clients on Monday. ‘We believe it will focus initially on mobile IM as opposed to e-mail,'” Marsal reports.
Marsal reports, “Wu said it’s unclear when Apple hopes to deliver the second device to market, as it appears to remain in the development phase. He said this newly uncovered handset is likely the company’s ‘smart phone’ and could be branded as ‘iChat mobile.'”

I’ll believe Apple is going to release a mobile phone when I see it in an Apple store.
IMHO, the idea of an Apple phone is just wishful thinking.
Would I buy an Apple phone? Yes, but not for a year or two and the cell phone market in the U.S. would have to be completely different. The sign-up-for-a-year-or-two of cell phone service plans would have to be non-existent, or almost so, and those aren’t going away anytime soon.
It’s the “free phones” that hook people to the service plans. The only way Apple would succeed with a cell phone is for them to be their own phone service company as well.
A possibility, but highly unlikely.
The FREE PHONES SUCK.
That’s the problem with the US wireless carriers, they push all their services on you and make you wade through menus and endless click-scrolling to accomplish anything. I have not owned a phone yet that I didn’t want to pitch into the sea at least once.
If Apple can make a phone that actually pleasant to use, it WILL sell. The RAZR was 400 bucks when it came out and they sold gazillions of them, and I hate that bloody phone too.
Consumers really WILL pay for a better product if they have the chance. You just watch.

Boy, this is a great way to kill sales for the new Apple phone: tell us that a better one is right around the corner. Apple must know that it will have only one chance to make a good first impression. If their first phone doesn’t hit a home run, they may not get another chance for a second model.
This report worries me.
My hope is the iPhone will have a limited version of MacOS X on it.
Plus I hope it will reduce complexity by:
Reduce Application complexity
Use X-Code to compile iPhone apps, test them on your Mac then download them to your iPhone. This way Apple can download and run limited versions on iCal, iChat, FrontRow, etc.
Reduce menu complexity
I hope all configuring will be via your Mac/PC then sync’ed to your phone to remove the phone’s complexity in configuring. Allow multiple iPhones to be Sync’ed to one account e.g. family contact details.
Reduce port complexity
I hope the iPhone charges only via USB.
Reduce Screen complexity
Large buttons on screen due to less clutter for other elements fighting for screen space.
iChat contacts, iTunes songs, address book, iCal calendars and iPhoto photos plus an iPhone version of PhotoBooth to take personal photos then manipulate them. I want the ‘Smart Playlists/Albums’ technology applied to the iPhone to list groups of e.g. “family members who I haven’t phoned in 2 weeks, but their birthday is in the next month”.
No, but I can say . . . Maxwell Smart shoe phone! Excuse me, my shoe is ringing.

People People!!!
Let’s think here! If you can hook into a network with a phone think about the possibilities! I was running last night and I thought about this and it brought a smile to my face. Please tell me if this is a farce or just too hard to do.
1. Mobile iChat. Viedo on cellular service seems to be the new rage. Why not a direct conversation iChat style? That would be insane and also fit into somehting that apple would do for sure.
2. With having that why not also have your songs stream to you from the iTunes servers? They have your purchase info. Screw loading your phone. Why not just be able to stream the songs that you have purchased already no matter what ther amount. It just hits the server for the song that is playing and maybe buffers that 1 song as it plays. So you can carry your entire music collection anywhere ( purchased, a big selling point for apple and a huge leap ahead of any competition )
3. Of course home sync. for all your calendar and bookmarks, and contacts.
4. Oh, and my realistic want is it to be a flip phone for damage and scratch reasons.

With the new patent Apple applied for, imagine a phone that will automatically light up a keyboard for typing, then switch to numbers for phone use, then switch to an wheel (non-clickable, of course) on a translucent surface. holy crap, iphone?? more like iCan’tbelievemyEyes
When it comes to phones it’s all about the GUI. I have a SLVR which does everything I need and is nice and slim but the GUI and the keypad suck! The scroll wheel is an intuitive input device couple this with Apple’s GUI pixie dust, add in an ipod, sync it all with your mac with iLife and you’ve got a winner.
I hope it works more smoothly for more people than iChat A/V does. My own iChat A/V required extensive port-mapping of the router before it became fully functional and I still have never once, in over two years of A/V advocacy, encountered a single soul who has been willing to go through similar efforts in order to video chat with me. The one exception was a volunteer iChat A/V tester individual in the Apple Discussion Forums.
My guess is that this is why Apple is being so slow in releasing the iPhone. It’s apparently very difficult to get some of the more advanced aspects of the technology to work right out of the box with single-click ease of use.
The other problem with iChat A/V is that it doesn’t work cross platform with PCs unless they have MSN Messenger 5.9 installed. So? Well, as it turns out, MSN Messenger 5.9 has a substantial conflict circumstance with Hotmail in Windows XP. I got three different people to install that version of MSN Messenger and every one of them had their Hotmail immediately seize right up and become non-functional. Needless to say, they promptly uninstalled MSN Messenger 5.9 .. which rendered them unaccessable to me via iChat A/V. It’s not a very useful app, imho. Who can you talk to with iChat A/V? Almost nobody, sadly.
Silly me. The above post should all read AIM 5.9 in every instance. Regardless, the rest of the posting is factual. Sorry bout that.
