Analyst: Apple’s ‘Let’s Rock’ event to feature new MacBooks along with new iPods?
Wednesday, September 03, 2008 - 01:49 PM EDT

"Apple Inc. has set the stage for new iPod music player launches - and potential price cuts - with a media invitation to a 'Let's Rock' event next Tuesday that has been widely anticipated by Apple fans," Jim Finkle reports for Reuters.

"Analysts said they expect Apple to announce a refresh of its line of iPods and cuts to prices of some models," Finkle reports.

"'It's got to be new iPods. That's 100 percent certain,' Needham & Co analyst Charles Wolf said. 'The only question I cannot answer is whether they will also do new MacBooks,'" Finkle reports.

"If the Cupertino, California-based company does not announce new MacBooks next week, Wolf said he expects new laptop models to be unveiled later in September," Finkle reports.

MacDailyNews Take: Sometimes we wish our MacBook Pro trackpads were actually removable; offering a replaceable slot for our iPhones and/or iPod touches. After all, they are Multi-Touch™ already; the iPhone 3G would even add GPS and a 3G modem to the MacBooks; and they could charge while docked; and then the apps... Oops!

Maybe having solar power for recharging the batt's?

Sep 03, 08 - 01:58 pm Comment from: jtc

MDN has a good idea, plug in the iphone or ipod touch and play some of the games on the screen. Though bluetooth would work as well... using the iphone or ipod touch as a controller which this could also work for the iTV making it also a gaming console.

Macbook Touch and Macbook Touch Pro. Pro in the same form factor as the Air (read: solidly constructed) but $2,000 cheaper than the air yet contain double the size SSD. I'll take 2.

This does not have to due with the new ipods or macbooks but I wanted to know, since I dont have a mac, if you have tiger can you upgrade to leopard and do you have to buy it because the computers already cost a lot. Also are the updates for leopard free like the iphone because I know that ipod touch user have to buy.

Use the Bluetooth and let it be a wireless device for any Mac, AppleTV or the next "Just one more thing". They have it as a Remove for the AppleTV now and it could be so much more.

@ iP 1G is Better.

If it does not come with your computer, you have to buy each 1st decimal upgrade. That is, if you have 10.4, but want 10.5, you have to buy it. All the second decimal upgrades so far have been free. For example, from 10.4.10 to 10.4.11, was free.

BTW, this is off-topic.

Hi "iPhone 1st gen is better", the Mac comes with the most up to date OS X and the revisions are downloadable. It is when there is a 10._ jump that you have to buy the upgrade.

Ask at a local Apple Store and they will explain it to you while you are their.

Sloar technology is still too inefficient.

@MDN Take

Actually the Trackpad is removable. I accidentally dropped my powerbook down a stairwell (you know that gap between the guard rail separating two flights of stairs?) and the trackpad popped out quite easily.

Instead of putting the trackpad back in, I'm going to use my iPhone as the trackpad. I still don't have the UI quite right but It's getting there.

Then I plan to use my iPod classic as a replacement hard drive and my old Palm Treo for the new keyboard. (Couldn't find all the keys at the bottom of the stairwell.)

The only thing more dangerous than an engineer with a software patch is a programmer with a soldering iron.

iPhone 1st gen is better,

Don't worry about it. If you don't have a Mac yet, you'd be astounded and ecstatic with Mac OS X 10.2 Jaguar.

And you're wrong about the iPhone. iPhone 3G is better (GPS alone is worth the price of admission).

MDN MW: "behind." As in, Microsoft is so far "behind" Apple, they have no hope of ever catching up.

The Macbook Pro trackpad IS the Mac TouchTablet everyone is talking about...removable when you need it and dockable/chargeable when you don't.

Brilliant!

HMCIV
The keyboard will also pop off from an iBook under similar circumstances.

Sep 03, 08 - 02:52 pm Comment from: R2

I have to agree with Fred Mertz. The iPhone 3G is better than the iPhone classic... at dropping calls, feeling like a cheap plastic Motorola and adding an extra $10 a month to your bill for data service that's rarely available and not even all that much faster.

Sep 03, 08 - 03:00 pm Comment from: Owner of both iPhone and iPhone 3G

iPhone 3G is better. I own both devices. The GPS and GPS-aware apps are the key and important difference.

I still use my original iPhone as my "Super iPod touch" on the treadmill and also lend it to my daughter to watch videos, play games, and listen to music in the car, etc.

Owner:
We do the same thing.
My son plays with all the games and plays movies on the 1G iPhone. It's an amazing gaming toy, no doubt about it.

Back on topic. I seriously doubt new MacBooks will be presented next week. No matter what Apple seems to be up to analysts always always always want/expect more and this always always always leads to disappointment on the day.

I expect Apple to do what they plan and I expect it to be good.

GPS these balls.

Sep 03, 08 - 03:46 pm Comment from: Shakey McFlakerstein

"GPS these balls."

We have. Thanks.

And it seems they are making hot tea in a rather odd way with the owner of Doug's Wiener Hut on State Hwy 42 next to the CVS that has Pepsi six-packs on sale (limit 4 to a customer).

Sep 03, 08 - 04:31 pm Comment from: Anonymous©

Maybe I missed it, but do people know that there's a free App called Snatch that allows you to use the iPhone as a trackpad? Works great, as you get greater range, as it uses your wifi connection. I use it as a Keynote presentation remote.

Sep 03, 08 - 04:53 pm Comment from: HolyMackerel

Why remove the trackpad? Just use the iPhone/iTouch as an external USB multi-touch input device.

Plus I agree on letting iPhone apps run on the Mac since the technology exists via the developer kit anyway.

"This does not have to due with the"

...you lost me right there dude.

Sep 03, 08 - 06:12 pm Comment from: Name

The name of the event is "Let's Rock" so it's probably going to focus heavily on iPods. I don't think we'll be seeing any mac updates.

Sep 03, 08 - 08:10 pm Comment from: Nom

Say hello to the Rockintosh.
