Analyst: Beleaguered Palm’s Pre sales continue to slow
Thursday, July 09, 2009 - 02:00 PM EST

Apple Online Store "According to Pali Research, Pre sales are clearly slowing," John Paczkowski reports for AllThingsD.

"'We estimate that sales of the Palm Pre slowed again over the past week compared to the prior week but likely remain over 30,000 compared to less than 40,000 in the prior week and our estimate of 50,000-60,000 in the week ending June 26th,' Pali analyst Walter Piecyk said in a research note this morning," Paczkowski reports.

Full article here.

MacDailyNews Take: Beleaguered Palm's dismal and rapidly declining results force us to revise our math from last week. Fargin' incompetent Apple cast-offs! Let's see...

We'll give them 35,000 units per week (before returns) x 52 weeks = 1.82 million units per year. That's down from 2.08 million at last week's rates. In other, more harrowing, words for Palm: At current rates, and very generously assuming no further falloff in demand, Palm will sell fewer Pre units in its entire first year than the number of iPhone 3GS units that Apple sold in roughly their first week.*

No wonder Apple has all the mobile app developers.

*And, we're not even counting iPhone 3G units.

You know the beautiful thing: June 29, 2009, is the two-year anniversary of the first shipment of the iPhone. Not one of those people will still be using an iPhone a month later. - Palm-backer Roger McNamee, Elevation Partners - March 05, 2009

Well, to be fair, it's not quite July 29 yet. He could have been predicting something other than market dominance by the Pre -- perhaps the apocalypse?

Jul 09, 09 - 01:08 pm Comment from: January 24, 1984

Love that Elevation Partners quote.

"Oh, the hubris!"

Jul 09, 09 - 01:16 pm Comment from: Palm Who?

wannabe,

Actually, if you really want to be fair...

Dipshit said June 29, not July.

Jul 09, 09 - 01:17 pm Comment from: Mike Caine

@ wannabe

The quote mentions June 29

Jul 09, 09 - 01:22 pm Comment from: silverwarloc

You guys missed Wannabe's subtle and underhanded sarcasm...I was LOL when he said that. Notice the ending.

Jul 09, 09 - 01:22 pm Comment from: ABQ Peter

@wannabe, it is june, not july 29th

Jul 09, 09 - 01:23 pm Comment from: Spark

JUNE 29th, not July.

Jul 09, 09 - 01:25 pm Comment from: MacTony

I thought that the Pre was going to put the iPhone in it's place........ wait, it did. 1st smile

Jul 09, 09 - 01:29 pm Comment from: Joe

It says -- a month later
the launch was June 29th--
so July 29th would be a month later...

Jul 09, 09 - 01:36 pm Comment from: Come back, astroturfer!

Where's oneAwake? These articles feel so empty without him.

Maybe Palm was forced to lay him off :(

Jul 09, 09 - 01:37 pm Comment from: Predrag

Four commenters didn't pay attention reading the quote and wannabe's comment; only one commenter actually did (in addition to those who got it, but didn't bother writing).

Even with the revised numbers, Pre can still bring in more cash than all Treos, Centros and whatever else they are making (is there anything else...?) combined. Which just might, depending on profit margins, get Palm out of the red and into the black.

Well, good luck, Palm. You'll need boatload of it...

Jul 09, 09 - 01:43 pm Comment from: JAGWiRE

MDN, what's with all the vitriol? Palm was a great company until Colligan f***ked it up. Not every competitor to Apple is bad. Chill out on the hate.

Jul 09, 09 - 01:43 pm Comment from: bryan

The PRE is a Piece of Shit who the F cares!!!!

Jul 09, 09 - 01:44 pm Comment from: Digital Mercenary

He may be right after all. All those people whoʻs contracts are up are likely now using an iPhone 3GS.

Jul 09, 09 - 01:46 pm Comment from: Roger

MDN - Seriously? Beleaguered again? Seriously? That's the best you can come up with? How many times can use "beleaguered" in the span of two months? Leaves me feeling beleaguered and whatnot...

Jul 09, 09 - 01:50 pm Comment from: cbascue

You do all realize the Pre's OS will be on several different phones including non Palm phones? Its the operating system not only the phone. I smell Beta-Max.... I have a Itouch, its cool but no phone.

Jul 09, 09 - 01:51 pm Comment from: Buster

@Roger...I am waiting for MDN to say 'Beleaguered Microsoft selling the tattered remains of their failed company to Apple'.

THAT will be a good and happy use of it.

Jul 09, 09 - 02:02 pm Comment from: Rike

I love the smell of "Beleaguered" in the morning!

Jul 09, 09 - 02:08 pm Comment from: Mr Numbers

Palm needs to sell +8 million Pres for its current stock price to make any sense. It is not going to happen (@ 1.8 million they are far from it), take over is the only hope for Palm investors...

Jul 09, 09 - 02:13 pm Comment from: Macaday

Assuming a good number of Pre owners are on their third product in their search for a non-defective one, all the Pre sales numbers should be treated with caution.

Pre-empt at your peril...

Jul 09, 09 - 02:15 pm Comment from: Macaday

@Buster

I think you might ask MDN to run a competition - 'What part of Microsoft would Apple wish to buy?'

I can't think of anything though...

Jul 09, 09 - 02:19 pm Comment from: wannabe

Roger, MDN is trying to make up for the decade where media outlets habitually referred to Apple as "beleaguered".

At this rate they will have balanced things out around 2050.

Jul 09, 09 - 02:27 pm Comment from: Uncle Al

I don't mind the beleaguered jokes, but to be fair, a Google search shows these numbers:

about 993 English pages for "beleaguered apple"
about 1,710 English pages for "beleaguered microsoft"
about 10,400 English pages for "beleaguered dell"
about 16,000 English pages for "beleaguered palm"

Looks like Apple isn't so beleaguered after all.

Jul 09, 09 - 02:34 pm Comment from: Anonymous©

I don't know about Uncle Al, but I show 457,000 hits for beleaguered Apple.

135k for beleagured Microsoft.
63k for beleagured Dell.

and 1.25M for beleagured Palm, so I guess Palm takes the beleagured cake.

Jul 09, 09 - 02:35 pm Comment from: Predrag

JagWire:

The reason for all the Palm-bashing is the hubris and all Apple-bashing statements that Colligan, McNamee and others made between two and a half years ago (when Apple announced first iPhone) and now. If you search for my post a few days ago, you'll find several quotes, along the lines of the now famous one by Colligan: "They aren't just going to figure it out. They aren't going to just walk in" (or something like that; I don't have time to google it now).

Palm made a very concerted effort to bash the iPhone before it came out and after. They again made an effort to bash it six months ago, when they announced their Pre. They really asked for all the Palm bashing MDN (and posters) are giving.

Jul 09, 09 - 02:45 pm Comment from: chaor11@gmail.com

The only thing worse than the losers on this site are the losers who operate the site and continue to desperately call Palm beleagured.
There is only 1 scorecard that matters to real people (that excepts the losers who constantly post here and those who maintain the site) and that is share price performance:
Last 12 months through today - Apple -21.5% (how can that be?)
Palm + 171%. Case closed.

Jul 09, 09 - 02:57 pm Comment from: Buster

@Macaday ...isn't Apple building a new campus? Perhaps they could use the chairs from Redmond...oh wait....

@chaor11@gmail.com...."The only thing worse than the losers on this site"...are people who use the word 'loser' more than the word beleaguered.

Jul 09, 09 - 03:19 pm Comment from: ecrabb

@ ,

Are you really that utterly ignorant that you think an increase in share price is all that matters to "real people"? You're joking, right?

Let's see, in roughly the same year that Apple's share price has lost 21.5%, their NET INCOME was almost 5 BILLION DOLLARS on nearly a 15% net profit margin.

Palm? While people were jacking up the stock price placing their cheap money bets on the long shot, the company lost over 700 MILLION dollars - almost 100 million just this last quarter. If you got in when a share was the same price as a double cheeseburger and got out at $10 or $15, you did pretty well. But, if I owned Palm, I'd be taking my profits, and buying AAPL with the proceeds. Palm is ridiculously over-valued and AAPL is still undervalued.

Let's talk again in a quarter or two, and we can revisit why stock price isn't the only thing that matters. Of course, if you own it, the stock price sure as hell will matter by then, and it won't be because it's gaining!!!

Jul 09, 09 - 04:03 pm Comment from: alansky

Amazing how many suckers there are out there! Who would buy something like this except a moron with a grudge (against Apple)?

Jul 09, 09 - 04:06 pm Comment from: Demon

You know he was right on the money all of the original iPhone users are all know using iPhone 3Gs!

Jul 09, 09 - 04:39 pm Comment from: Bizlaw

Hey MDN:

Lay off the former Apple employees. Just because they left Apple doesn't make them sh*t. Maybe they saw that they wouldn't advance in Apple because the people in front of them who were very successful weren't going anywhere. Maybe they just wanted to do something different. Maybe Palm offered them twice the salary and had a better cafeteria.

Whatever their reasons for leaving, lay off the childish name calling.

Jul 09, 09 - 05:11 pm Comment from: Lolcat

Bizlaw, they argh traitors that must walk the plank!

Jul 09, 09 - 05:15 pm Comment from: Lolcat

, in comparison with Apple, view the stocks over 5 years, 10 years, or how about over the last 28 years...

Jul 09, 09 - 05:39 pm Comment from: iNeuron

The fluid dynamics of a toilet bowl and Palm's future appear to be progressively seeking equilibrium.
wink

Jul 09, 09 - 05:53 pm Comment from: London calling

The telling sign is the coming week or so with launches in UK / France etc. I love this site and people viewing Pre sales on one carrier (the 3rd in the States) vs. Apple on a few hundred world wide. 3GS sold a million across all carriers selling it. Break out states only sales and it's not that impressive.

Whatever though - this site is all about Apple and nothing else so I read it with a shred of insight into what is really happening in the industry.

Jul 09, 09 - 05:56 pm Comment from: Jubei

I'm still waiting for "REAL" numbers of Palm Pee sales from Palm and Sprint. So far its just all talk and no substance. Lets see how many Palm Pee were really sold during the weekend and to date!!!!

Jul 09, 09 - 06:47 pm Comment from: alsoran

Maybe you don't use Google correctly. You must put "beleaguered apple" in quotes in order for the two words to appear together. Your search has no meaning otherwise.

Jul 09, 09 - 07:25 pm Comment from: apus

Palm is advertising the pre heavily on tech-blogs, because they have 2 people of customers in mind:

1. Geeks that refuse to buy anything Apple
2. Regular people who a stuck with Sprint and have such a person as their family IT-guy

The market for the former is easily saturated, and the latter will get annoyed by abysmal build quality and the fact that they have to manage the running tasks in order to get usable battery life. No wonder sales decrease.

Jul 09, 09 - 08:31 pm Comment from: macslut

@alsoran

Even that doesn't work correctly. For example, this page will show up as "beleaguered apple", and sites that use it in context, but not the right context will show up as well...for example, "...the company once called beleaguered apple, is now..."

Jul 09, 09 - 08:41 pm Comment from: @Bizlaw

If former Apple employees don't want to be mocked and namecalled, then they shouldn't involve themselves in creating epic trainwrecks like the Palm Pre.

Jul 10, 09 - 10:05 am Comment from: JB Tipton

I disagree with chaor11 that there are losers on this site. Most of the comments I've seen here make interesting reading. I will say that some of the spelling choices are somwhat amusing, though. One of the posters spelled the word "now," k-n-o-w!

Jul 10, 09 - 11:47 am Comment from: JK

@Rike:

"I love the smell of "Beleaguered" in the morning"
