Analyst claims to have ‘seen first-hand a prototype slate-style computer from Apple’
Saturday, August 01, 2009 - 11:26 AM EDT

"Following reports in The Financial Times last week that Apple is preparing a multimedia computer in the shape of a tablet with a 10-inch screen, computer-industry executives are waiting with bated breath for what may be a final design from Apple in the next six weeks, say analysts," Tiernan Ray reports for Barron's.

"One veteran analyst who has seen first-hand a prototype slate-style computer from Apple says the device could be announced in September for release in November," Ray reports.

"Whatever the exact dates, the computer industry is so anxious to see what Apple introduces that it has held off on competing designs until Apple CEO Steve Jobs gives the device his final blessing," Ray reports. "'It's close enough now to a final design that in Asia, there's no other product in the waiting room or in the bullpen,' said the analyst. 'There are dozens of ODMs [original device makers] making products for Lenovo and other PC makers that are all waiting to see what the Apple product is.'"

Ray reports, "The new device, which may retail for US$699 to $799, could fulfill a variety of multimedia functions currently taken up by a gaggle of individual consumer electronics devices... The machine impresses with its display of hi-def video content, says the veteran analyst, who asked not to be identified. 'It's better than the average movie experience, when you hold this thing in your hands.'"

"The 'chatter' about the product feels just like what people said to me in March of 2006 when I reported on the nascent iPhone," Ray reports. "A second source confirmed to me that news of the new device 'is all over the supply chain in Asia.'"

Didn't Moby get a sneak preview of the iPod before it was released??

Would it be worth govin him a call?

"One veteran analyst who has seen first-hand a prototype slate-style computer from Apple...

Is Apple in the habit of giving technology field analysts an advance look at future devices?

Aug 01, 09 - 12:33 pm Comment from: alansky

Everybody's waiting to see what Apple comes up with so they can copy it. This is what they call "innovation". Pathetic!

Aug 01, 09 - 12:34 pm Comment from: Stenar

Release it already! I want to buy it!!

Aug 01, 09 - 12:47 pm Comment from: Original Jake

I hope Apple hits the $699 price point, at least for the lower-end model. That would be psychologically powerful and they would sell a ton. Apple could still have a higher end version for $799 or even $899, and they would sell more of the higher models just because people looked at the $699 version. That's how the iPhone is working. People look at the $99 3G because it's not very expensive, then they end up buying the $199 3 GS. Apple thought they would buy the cheaper version and didn't produce enough of the 3 GS, now they've adjusted production. But the $99 version has been very important in getting (more) consumers to even consider the iPhone.

So I hear U2 has changed their mind and is trying to contact someone at Apple.

Aug 01, 09 - 12:53 pm Comment from: jambo

I just hope there is no monthly plan with this slate computer. I just want to use it thru my airport extreme.

Aug 01, 09 - 01:10 pm Comment from: Brau

Now we're beginning to see the value of that Oily-o-phobic coating, solid aluminum construction, and lithium battery fires. 10 inches is big enough to cook a pizza on ... and no trans-fats needed when cooking. MobileMe customers will have the ability to cook their initials into the crust.

Pizza and a movie ... only on the new iPan

You heard it here first!

Aug 01, 09 - 01:12 pm Comment from: Jubei

@alansky

Exactly. First they have to insult Apple in the new product and how it lacks 1000 features. Then a few months layer they come out with a similar device and claim that Apple has zero influence and theirs have 2000 features. wink

Aug 01, 09 - 01:19 pm Comment from: aka Christian

While camping recently, I watched MST3K episodes on my iPhone before falling asleep. Fantastic graphic and sound quality (through a pair of mid-range Sennheiser earphones). If the screen had been larger, it would have been even better. I can now imagine a use for one of these tablet things - the ultimate portable media device. This might not only work for those in fields where a tablet is handy, but as a multi-media device, it could be outstanding.

Aug 01, 09 - 01:25 pm Comment from: freebeer

Loose lips sink ships - haven't those Asian manufacturers heard the expression?

When Apple finally single handedly pull the computer/electronic/media industries out of the recession, will the FCC finally drop its probes?

Aug 01, 09 - 01:49 pm Comment from: vanfruniken

Apple has been known to let circulate bogus mockup models or true models dressed up in a different casing, with the intention to confuse anal-ists and throw off some of the speculation (e.g., in the wrong direction).

ODM's, fire up your photocopiers!!!

Redmond has ones you can borrow if you need to.

Aug 01, 09 - 02:12 pm Comment from: TheConfuzed1

Walt Mossberg got an iPhone before others did, but he didn't discuss it until Apple said it was okay to do so.

I think Apple has better control over their prototypes than this.

Look at the case where the Foxconn worker "lost" the 4th gen iPhone prototype... Has anyone seen photos of this alleged device? If it's just out there in the wild, you would think that someone has seen it by now.

Nothing to see here. Just another unsubstantated rumor. Move along, move along.

Aug 01, 09 - 03:08 pm Comment from: LateRegistrant

Mebbe, mebbe,

it will have a split keyboard on the back for touch-typing, with other controls there,

and, and, you'll be able to work the whole screen by touch, without looking at any keys or buttons or anything....

That would be so cool!!!

Aug 01, 09 - 04:12 pm Comment from: wleddy

Since when does Apple show off secret new products to a "veteran analyst", and if they did, wouldn't there be an NDA????

I call bogus.

Aug 01, 09 - 04:36 pm Comment from: Macrelated

"Since when does Apple show off secret new products to a "veteran analyst", and if they did, wouldn't there be an NDA????
I call bogus."

If any analyst has seen anything it probably would not be with Apple's consent. Most likely it happened, if at all, with the help of a rogue employee at the "ODM" level

Aug 01, 09 - 06:09 pm Comment from: Ferf Muckmeyer

This just sounds like more BS. It's been discussed more times than I can count. I guess I'll believe it when I see it.

Aug 01, 09 - 07:20 pm Comment from: Roy

Ok, is it just me, or is anyone else having a hard time seeing how a tablet could actually be of any use?

You can't type on it because you'd have to be hunched over the thing with it on your lap, and it wouldn't have a kickstand because then you'd get gorrilla arm from resting your elbows on the table. If that doesn't convince you just look at some of the YouTube videos of tablets and see for yourself. Except for certain tasks like maybe Photoshop the tablet functionality detracts more than it adds.

Apple doesn't have to bring out a tablet because... they already have. It's called the iPhone/iPod Touch and it's perfect for the job because anything bigger just becomes a pain in the ass.

Having said that, I'd sure like to see an apple-designed tablet that shows me a solution to the above problems.

What's to get excited about? When are you MAC fangirls going to get tired of the empty promises and endless vaporware from MAC? This thing hasn't even been announced yet. It's all smoke and mirrors and hearsay from cultist MAC astroturfers or blinded-by-shiny-fruit-logo "analysts". At least Microsoft's innovative Surface table computing platform has been demonstrated on NBC's Today show. And we know of magnificent and passionately desired items in Microsoft's product pipeline including Windows 7, Zune HD and the groundbreaking Natal. Wake up, MAC lemmings.

Your potential. Our passion.™

"One veteran analyst who has seen first-hand a prototype slate-style computer from Apple says the device <i>is in a museum, and for now, Apple is calling it 'Newton' ..."

But seriously, once again I smell "Market Manipulation".

If Apple doesn't release an "iTablet" this Fall, Microsoft-bound commentators will loudly lament Apple's dismal failure for not getting this "promised" product to market within a reasonable amount of time.

This whisper campaign also works by attempting to suppress sales of present Apple products by insinuating that if shoppers just hold off, they'll be able to purchase something bigger and better in the near future.

I don't know if this type of "reporting" is cause for SEC investigation, but it sure stinks of anti-Apple market tactics.

Maybe we will be able to tether iPhone to new tablet device and wifi for rest. say 699$ Then a 399$ version on AT&T;? For 24.99 month ? 3g 2 yr contract. Full iTunes built in leopard mobile os. Pencil thin like iPod touch. Maybe 7x9" in size. app store, HD , games, iChat cam! iChat , games, office uses, gps, iPhoto , multi touch, games......

Aug 01, 09 - 08:37 pm Comment from: Macerroneous

I like your thinking, troglodyte! Remember at WWDC, when Apppe omitted ATT as a participant in tethering for iPhone and we all tokk it as a silent slam against ATT? Maybe they're actually the good guys, and they're in an agreement with Apple, such that when you sign a two year contract for iPhone tethering, ATT will put up $300 against the cost of your new tablet. That way, you need to have an iPhone, a tablet, and of course a Mac ( for "real" computing).

This way, Steve gets your money all three ways! Look for ATT to delay tethering announcement until the tablet unveils!

"Analyst claims to have ‘seen first-hand a prototype slate-style computer from Apple’"

And? But? So? Therefore?

Apple has done a lot of prototypes that never became products, mostly for very good reasons.

Aug 02, 09 - 03:45 am Comment from: Gosh

so is it a Mac or will it run the badly named iPhone OS?

even more so now they need to sort the OS naming out as well as giving due credit to OS X which is the basis.

@brau,

you have something against pizza & movies. and get with the times bro, no fires related to Apple... blame the battery producer of that OLD POWERBOOK... sony.

btw, this Tablet might be cool for traveling and downloading pix/movies from your camera... but i still prefer a laptop (still prefer actual keyboard) and one desktop (for power and value)

still don't believe it until i see it.

why one would need this above an iphone.
(Who would need this if they own an iphone)

Aug 03, 09 - 04:19 pm Comment from: Mac-nugget

This means shit. The guy could have seen some lab prototype that would not indicate that Apple is actually working on a release product. I am sure Apple has lots and lots of ideas that we, the general public, do not ever see in actual shipping products. I am sure they even come out with some pretty stupid ideas that get discarded.
