Analyst: Microsoft’s Windows Vista is very good for Apple Mac
Tuesday, March 13, 2007 - 09:20 AM EST

"Steve Jobs may want to send Steve Ballmer a thank-you note. Microsoft's marketing of its new Windows Vista operating system could pay off handsomely for the company's old rival Apple," Thomas Claburn reports for InformationWeek.

"'We think Vista is good for Apple,' ThinkEquity Partners financial analyst Jonathan Hoopes says in an e-mail. 'As people upgrade their PCs, we expect them to increasingly consider the Mac alternative,'" Claburn reports.

Claburn reports, "'We think Vista has established a 'hardware upgrade' mind-set among PC users,' the report states. 'Meanwhile, Apple's strong retail store presence; all the buzz around the iPhone, the hugely successful iPod/iTunes combo; and Apple's popular Mac ad campaign are likely to combine into a 'maybe I should buy a Mac' decision. In other words, we expect Apple to be a significant beneficiary of the Vista marketing effort.'"

"Whether or not a notable number of people really are switching from PC to Mac, Microsoft stands to benefit Apple marketing as well. Apple customers who want to run Windows using virtualization software like Apple's Boot Camp, Parallel's Desktop for Mac, or VMware's Fusion will also be Microsoft customers, at least in the short term, since they will have to purchase a copy of Windows," Claburn reports.

Full article here.

[Thanks to MacDailyNews Reader "LinuxGuy and Mac Prodigal Son" for the heads up.]

MacDailyNews Note: Apple's Boot Camp is a dual boot solution, not virtualization (see Parallels Desktop for Mac and VMWare Fusion). Windows runs at native speeds on a Mac via Boot Camp.

MacDailyNews Take: Microsoft's pain comes a bit later than that of the box assemblers. On the day that Apple released Boot Camp, April 05, 2006, we wrote in our MacDailyNews Take, "Welcome to 'Embrace and extinguish,' Apple-style. The war ain't over, folks. It never was. Now, a new chapter begins and today's shot will be heard around the world! Don't you just love the smell of napalm in the morning? This doesn't hurt Microsoft (yet), but it absolutely puts Dell, HP, Lenovo, Toshiba, etc. into a world of pain... As Windows-only users buy Macs that will provide them their 'comfort' of Windows, they will experience Mac OS X and use it for the excellent Mac-only applications. We all know what happens when people are given the chance to really use Macs for longer than five minutes, they usually want to buy a Mac. These new Apple Mac hardware users will start out using Windows more than Mac OS X and end up using Mac OS X exclusively. Watch and see."

Next week I have to help my Father-in Law with his Vista machine. None of his peripherals work anymore. I tried to tell him.

Mar 13, 07 - 08:30 am Comment from: WiseGuy

The problem with running Microsoft OS or software on Mac's is it cheapens the Mac experience.

I forsee people in the future saying "yea I tried a Mac it wasn't all that" just because they ran Windows.

Mar 13, 07 - 08:32 am Comment from: Buster

People will look back one day and really see that the switch to Intel Macsl and the ability to run Windows was brilliant and the single underlying reason for Apple's success (future).

Oh, that photo is still funny. Hey! Where is Ballmer's left hand? Is that why Bill is grinning?

Mar 13, 07 - 08:35 am Comment from: Irish Dude

I'm beginning to think that Mdn's whole embrace and extinguish theory may actually turn out to be true. It will be another while though before we see over 10% imo. More and more people I know here in Dublin are making the switch. In the last few months 3 friends of mine have done so, along with another friends dad, my ex girlfriend and a few others. It is really happening I tell you. wink

Mar 13, 07 - 08:36 am Comment from: TowerTone

A buddy of mine who had a computer shop and now works at a software company upgraded and had several problems with drivers, mainly for audio cards. He said now that he finally has Vista working, he likes it because it reminds him of a Mac...And yes, he knows, it is only similiar in LOOKS!

RE : The earlier report of Apple UK accidently revealing the 8-core ..(The Quad-Quad ?) ... if this beast is to be announced, then it could spell the beginning of the end for the beleaguered WinDoze world ?

Yeah, some say that Michael Dell has an 8-core.. but honestly, who remembers any hype prior its release ?

Now why does the Carly Simon song .. "Anticipation" come to mind ? .. LOL
(For those too young to remember that one .. check the ITMS for a sample)

Mar 13, 07 - 08:48 am Comment from: Grifterus

During 90s, when a Mac was way to expensive for the average consumer, I would have agreed with looking for a Mac-link look and feel. Hey! I did it myself on my old, sucky Win95 laptop. I put a lot of stuff and tweaked it to make it look like a Mac, thinking "sometime..."

But today, having a Mac costing less than any Vista-compatible overbloated PC, I don't understand people switching to Vista for the "Mac look".

Come on people! Get a life! Get a Mac!

Mar 13, 07 - 08:51 am Comment from: Grifterus

I don't know if anybody realized how EXPENSIVE Vista is, but....

Have you noticed that for the price of 2 Vista licenses you can buy a Mac Mini (including the OS) ?

Mar 13, 07 - 08:56 am Comment from: jay

Vista is also good for Apple because any comparison between it and OS X shows how much better OS X is, and how much Vista copied a years-old OS X.

Mar 13, 07 - 08:58 am Comment from: Twisted Mac Freak

". . . the Carly Simon song .. 'Anticipation'"

Still makes me think of ketchup.

Mar 13, 07 - 09:00 am Comment from: Twisted Mac Freak

I don't think Apple is being aggressive enough. When does the Switch or Die campaign begin?

Mar 13, 07 - 09:03 am Comment from: oh my

Calling a Spade, a Spade ... not a fcking Shovel

On another note.. those WinDozers who actually do buy a Mac and then run WinCrap on it.. will eventually discover something we Mac-Heads have known all along !

And that is .. the words "Computer Virus" is a misnomer ...
Should be called "WinDoze virus" ... cuz thats what they really are !

Now, doesn't that thought just warm the cockles of your heart ? .. LOL

Mar 13, 07 - 09:06 am Comment from: TowerTone

there is no 'Anticipation' on here, as far as songs go, but to a teenaged boy, this pic gave me plenty of anticipations....and clues.

Those who've upgraded to Vista are the ones who are saying it's the final straw and switching to Mac...

...pity the Vista upgrade campaign hasn't been MUCH more successful. wink

Here's what I did with my father about 6 years ago when he kept asking for PC help: I told him I'd give him all the Mac help he needed for free, but I was going to charge him heavily for any PC help. He now has three Macs (just got a Macbook Pro) and I almost never get calls for help. When he does call for help, it's almost always a problem with MS Office. wink

MDN Magic Word: never, as in: He'll never again buy a PC.

Mar 13, 07 - 11:31 am Comment from: Jim - the independent voter

31 switched friends/coworkers and counting since the release of bootcamp.

Bootcamp was a masterful move by Apple. It gives them the security blanket, and in their minds, a safe upgrade path.

I'm like a hero and the local apple store. Everytime I come in with a new friend I get greeted like Norm on Cheers.

His Steveness should send me a t-shirt or something.

"Can someone give me a good reason to pay for OS X when many flavors of Linux are free?"

Yes. I'm capable.

Mar 13, 07 - 05:56 pm Comment from: Chaz

To Duane:
Let's put it this way. Linux is like that nappy old prostitute on the corner that you cn get for five bucks, with all the warts and scars and scabby dry vagina. OR you could get the Dallas Cowboy cheerleader (OS X), and when you push in it's like butter!!

Mar 13, 07 - 05:57 pm Comment from: Chris

Duane: The quality and consistency of software is SO much better on OS X than on Linux. And, yes, I have used Linux. For two years exclusively before switching back to Windows briefly, then permanently to OS X 3 years ago. Linux is completely not user friendly, and if you want to, you can still run most *nix tools/programs on OS X.

Magic Word: One. One computer, all three major OS's.

Mar 13, 07 - 05:58 pm Comment from: Chris

Yeah, I was tryin' to say what Chaz said.

Maybe isn't good enough. You need to convince.

Where's the tipping point that'll finally bring PC fence-sitters to Apple?

Mar 13, 07 - 06:15 pm Comment from: Kyle

DUDE!!!

Mar 13, 07 - 06:57 pm Comment from: Kenny

Games, games, games that's all my PC mates think about (and we're all rapidly aproaching 40, I mean geez we're not kids anymore). They're all whining about how much it will cost to upgrade. A lot of them bought new PCs a couple of years ago and are upset they have to upgrade already. I've just finished using a G3 iBook (it died) been using it for 7 years to do real work not play bloody games. 7 years without an upgrade. I'm now on a new MacBook Pro, mmm heaven. I expect this to last around the same time. Still if it only lasts 5 years that's better value for money over windows. And surprisingly it plays the odd game or 2. So short story, PC users (at least my freinds) are stubourn meatheads who think games, music, porn and copying DVDs is all a computer does.
Apple needs to port at least the top 20 games list to the Mac and stick them in the Apple Store window. Then you'll suck in more PC users.

Mar 13, 07 - 08:54 pm Comment from: Les Nessman

@TowerTone:

This is why Dr. Johnny Fever took Venus Flytrap aside in one episode of WKRP and said, "Come on, let's go look at some Carly Simon album covers." And why Venus was so eager to agree.
