Analyst Wu: Apple building 2 new distinct iPhone models; 5-6 million unit ramp up
Wednesday, April 08, 2009 - 03:59 PM EDT

"Adding his voice to the drumbeat of speculation about Apple’s future iPhone plans, Kaufman Bros.’ Shaw Wu weighed in early Wednesday with a new report from his supply chain and industry sources," Philip Elmer-DeWitt reports for Fortune.

Among his findings:
• Two new iPhones are in the works (a "Pro" model and an entry-level model)
• 5-6 million unit ramp up
• To ship in June or July
• AT&T may offer more flexible tiered data plans

Will they both be snappier?

Apr 08, 09 - 04:21 pm Comment from: Fat Bastard

Uh, yeah. Entry-level will be a 16-GB version. The Pro model will be a 32-GB version. No other differences.

Well thanks goodness Fat Bastard is here to tell us what the future brings...

Apr 08, 09 - 04:54 pm Comment from: TheConfuzed1

I agree with Fat Bastard.

I don't think Apple will muddy the waters trying to differentiate between pro and consumer in the phone market, especially while the current business model is working so well.

hasn't WU man been wrong just about everytime he predicts something. he's at least got one thing going for me, the whole june july bit. ahh what the hell, here's my prediction. Announcement in June, sold in July. how aboout that?? Any takers??

Apr 08, 09 - 06:52 pm Comment from: Arnold Ziffel

Just remember what Mr. Wu said a couple of months ago--no Mac refreshes any time soon, after which Apple announced refreshes to iMac, Mac mini, and Mac Pro.

Brilliant!

An entry level iPhone would be the kiss of death to some other parties, in the same manner the release of the iPod Nano and Shuffle killed off many rivals. Interesting, but will Apple do it so soon?

Apr 08, 09 - 07:36 pm Comment from: Cubert

If you look at what Apple did with the iPod - releasing a second model (the mini) and then eventually expanding it to four models - I can see them following this same pattern with the iPhone, given the similarities.

Heck, the iPhone's biracial brother is the iPod touch.

As opposed to the WinMo Student, Home, Business, Semi-Pro, Pro, Enterprise, and Master of The Universe versions. There is only one gesture that works across all those touch UI.

There at it again... sneaky bastards. smile Let details start to leak, kill current sells, as people wait to see what's coming out of the magicians hat in a few months.

This can't come soon enough, if the rumors of things like camera upgrades and video support are true.

Apr 09, 09 - 03:00 am Comment from: YoYo

So China will get it's own iPhone, what? Permanently blocked YouTube, red color, startup screen with the familiar looking babyface (not user changable), always on microphone, keyword activated video transmission, always on GPS tracking, what else, did I forget something? Oh, the battery is bigger but screen smaller.

Apr 09, 09 - 10:49 am Comment from: Gone Nuts

It seems like with each iPhone relaunch, AT&T;finds a way to increase pricing. I wonder what "flexible data plan" really means?

Apr 10, 09 - 08:17 am Comment from: ralph from berlin

"... a new report from his supply chain and industry sources"

that is so laughable it is not even funny anymore. summing up the existing rumors is not a "channel check". unbelieveable that no one in the mainstream press questions these people.

they are wrong most of the time but no one takes the burden to give us an info on the accuracy of their former predictions. these analysts don't have any "sources" or "supply chain contacts" they just rely on the public to quickly forget how wrong they were last time they predicted someting.
