Analyst Wu: New iPod nano with ‘magnesium-based casing’ may debut in late September

American Technology Research senior analyst Shaw Wu today reiterated his opinion that Apple’s as-yet-unannounced 2nd-generation iPod nano is running late for its as-yet-unannounced debut date.

Wu wrote:
We continue to believe that the new iPod nano (aka mini vPod) refreshes are facing transition issues due to an architecture move to an SoC vs. its present 3-chip solution. In terms of timing, we continue to believe calendar Q4 is most likely, specifically October and at the earliest, late Q3, meaning the second half of September.

An interesting data point we have picked up on the new Nanos is a new magnesium-based casing,. We believe this new casing will improve scratch-resistance, durability, and help lower Apple’s support and warranty costs.

In addition, we anticipate a preview on Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard, its next-generation operating system that will one up Microsoft Vista… We are prepared to see something that no one anticipated.

American Technology Research maintains a “Buy” rating on shares of Apple with a 12-month price target of $75.

  1. It’s also my opinion, that ‘Apple’s as-yet-unannounced 2nd-generation iPod nano is running late for its as-yet-unannounced debut date, that they haven’t announced, in the last announcement….

  2. OK, it’s time for these bullshit analysts to put up or shut up. They make this crap up, or hear it 4th hand, and then put it out in their reports. The Street picks up on it and it affects my freakin’ stock prices. So I’m tired of it.

I say people like Shaw Wu and Rob Enderle should put out their reports. If they are baseless, like they almost always are, it should cost them their jobs. If I went into work and made up useless bullshit day after day, I think my boss would figure this out pretty quickly and I’d be out of a job. As a result, I am careful with what I report, making sure that it’s accurate and thought out.

  3. I analyze that the new iPod nano will be a true nano and will therefore be invisible, but will hold twice as many songs as before since they will use nano-sized bits to store the music. The various earbud issues will be resolved since the nano will actually reside withing the brain of the owner and will be synced to their Mac by inserting their finger into a specially designed USB port on the front of their computer. Mac users will also have the advantage of a new high-speed Firewire port on the Mac (not available for Windows) which will allow significantly faster download rates through the use of two fingers to facilitate data transfer.

The stock may now go up.

“If I went into work and made up useless bullshit day after day, I think my boss would figure this out pretty quickly and I’d be out of a job.”

But if the useless bullshit that you made up day after day raked in loads of cash, I bet you’d be facing a promotion. Lo and Behold: the journalistic strategy of Tech writers.

That is, if you can bear to call it journalism…

  5. The new ipod nano will be disk shaped and will fit around your penis. It will only play Traci Lords techno music. When your are properly aroused, your penis will be covered in a magnesium shield, which will prepare you for safe sex with druggie prostitutes and will have an extra layer of protection should you meet Paris Hilton.

For women it can also be used as a vibrator, but only when plugged into Nike running shoes.

Due to problems with Samsung it will not use their chip, but rather one designed by Intel’s Israeli crew. As a result, the nano will only work for Jews and thus must be sold very cheaply.

As a promotional tie in, there will be a special multicolored model that will be marketed by Robin Williams. It has been remaned the iPod nanu nanu.

  6. Do Not Use iPod Around Open Flame.

    or if you do,

Please Feel Free to Eat The iPod Ashes.

(Yes, I know–Magnesium requires far more than a butane lighter to burn. Here‘s a fun article on burning a NeXT Cube.)

  7. From wikipedia:

Magnesium, in its purest form, can be compared to aluminium, and is strong and light, so it is used in several high volume part manufacturing applications, including automotive and truck components.

In December 2005, for the first time on record, the automotive grade magnesium alloy price per cubic centimeter dropped below the A380 aluminum alloy price per cm3.

The second application field of magnesium is electronic devices. Due to low weight, good mechanical and electrical properties, magnesium is widely used for manufacturing of mobile phones, laptops, cameras, etc. housings and other electronic components.

So it turns out that magnesium is a bit cheaper than aluminum and it’s more commonly used than one might think!
