Analysts: Apple could benefit from Microsoft’s latest Vista slip

“The delayed launch of Microsoft’s Vista is expected to negatively affect the company and overall winter 2006 PC demand, but it could be positive for Apple Computer, analysts say,” Maya Roney reports for Forbes. “Apple, with its refreshed Intel product line and anticipated launch of a new Mac operating system in the fall, could benefit from the diminished competition, according to a Wednesday research note from Bear Stearns.”

“As to other investment implications, analyst Andrew Neff said the Vista delay could be perceived as a negative for Dell, Gateway and Hewlett-Packard, ‘although the weakness could be offset by strength in first quarter 2007,'” Roney reports. “Piper Jaffray also sees the new January launch date as a ‘fractional near-term positive’ for Apple.”

MacDailyNews Take: It’s pretty sick and sad that Microsoft has to totally screw up for some to even think it could result in a positive for Apple Macintosh when, even after Vista is finally released, Mac OS X’s user experience will still be years and years ahead of Windows. Sheesh, Mac OS X 10.1 was/is better than Vista promises to be! It’s so clear that Mac OS X is superior to Windows XP that we sometimes can’t imagine that most average people have absolutely no earthly idea. Sometimes we just want to slap them to wake them up as they wheel total crap Windows PCs out of Best Buy like lemmings. Some of the poor bastards are even beaming about their purchasing mistake as they follow the pimply Best Buy hand-truck guy out to the parking lot. Ignorance is indeed bliss. A Mac would save them soooo much pain and frustration! Oh, well, at this point, with Apple practicing some sort of Mac marketing that takes the term “stealth” to a whole new level, we’re happy to see new Mac users regardless of their reasons for taking the plunge.

  1. “Analysts: Apple could benefit from Microsoft’s latest Vista slip”

Opportunity is there if, and only if, Apple decides to act.

As for Best Buy: anyone insane enough to go through buying a cheap PC from a big box store is beyond hope. Buying a used car is by far a better experience.

The smart ones know where the Apple Store is.

  2. It will like not amount to much for Apple.

Microsoft seems to use this Mark Twain quote as the basis for their corporate culture:

“H’aint we got all the fools in town on our side? And ain’t that a big enough majority in any town?”

Or, as Roger Ebert said, “…since any reasonable person would choose a Mac over a PC, Apple’s market share does provide us with an accurate reading of the percentage of reasonable people in our society.”

  3. OS X Tiger hasn’t gained any appreciable ground going up against an OS from 2001, Windows XP.

Besides, most of the initial Vista adoptions will come from businesses that receive Vista preinstalled on their new hardware purchases. And Vista corporate editions are still on target for a November ship date.

Flame away, but the reality is that Vista will have a greater installed base than Tiger in a matter of months. Add in Office 2007, Intel’s Ultra Mobile PC, Smart Phones, and Apple’s response to these (cue crickets chirping), and I don’t see the landscape changing anytime soon.

  4. Actually I think the delay is going to hurt Apple, and was probably put in place for that purpose.

When Vista finally ships, I believe the negative reviews and nonplussed public reaction will be good for Apple. But until that time, there’s still that blind, unsubstantiated hope that Vista will suck less than XP. The anticipation of Vista is probably preventing more people from switching to Mac than its actual release will.

  5. Anyone who doesn’t think Mac OS X 10.1 outshines Microsoft Vista has not used Mac OS X 10.1 and Vista beta. I’ve used them both pretty extensively.

With Mac OS X 10.1, the basics are all there and it is a thing of beauty. Just because Apple raised the bar with 10.2, 10.3, and 10.4, doesn’t mean Vista will be better than 10.1. And Widgets are overrated.

  6. “Sheesh, Mac OS X 10.1 was/is better than Vista promises to be! “

    10.2- no
    10.3 maybe…
    10.4 pretty close…
    10.5 definitely will be…

Although, Vista does promise to be a lot, so if we are comparing what Apple is currently shipping to what Microsoft is promsing, then I might have to say that what Vista promises to be is better than 10.4. But, if we are looking at what it will be (after many delays and feature cuts), then my above thoughts stand. But, if we are comparing promises, XP, 2000, and 98 all promised a lot too…..

  7. Mac OS X superior?

Hell no! If all the developers are developing Windows software and the small amount of Mac OS X developers are busy recoding for Universal binaries, what EXACTLY does Apple have for a advantage?

    Nothing absolutely nothing.

They don’t have hardware, because, DUH, Intel hasn’t released a 64 bit Dual Core yet, now if Apple stuck with IBM, perhaps they would have had a G6 out by now and everyone would have bought Apple hardware because it would be more productive.

But NOOOOO! Apple flipped the bird to IBM and now has no hardware advantage anymore.

    LISTEN TO ME!!!

INTEL WILL NOW JUST SLOWLY SPIN IT’S WHEELS UNTIL MICROSOFT IS READY

    HAHAHAHAHA!!

Welcome to the WinTel Alliance, the Dark Side of the Force.

    VISTA WILL BE YOUR MASTER!!!

  8. Your pain will only be satiated if Apple licenses the OS. If they don’t, and it looks like they won’t, then they will remain a niche player in the market. Now, by niche I’m thinking 10%…maybe even 15%

  9. Revolutions begin one person at a time. Every computing epiphany I have triggered by “bragging up” Macs has caused me to endure the early tirades by conversionists, but that always gives way to mutterings of appreciation.

I no longer anticipate binary approbation, but I reckon revolutions begin in small ways.

Such is the creed of the Mac evangelist.

  10. MacDude-This is when the hammer is flying through the air at a very large screen your are looking out of!

    HIT THE FLOOR!!!!!

No reinstall of Apple OS on three computer since 1994!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    No Virus’!!!!!!!!

    RUN MacDude—-RUN!!!!!

  11. With delays this far out, don’t let MS smooth it over. Vista is a wreck, and MS has absolutely no idea when it’ll ever ship. When you’re seeing delays 10 MONTHS ahead, you have more than some minor security fixes going on.

It’ll naturally play to Apple’s favor as more & more users get fed up.

I wonder how many geeks with “Vista Ready” PC’s are thinking “Why didn’t I just get a Mac?”.

  12. Microsoft is delaying Vista release so it can sell more X-Boxes next Christmas.

Microsoft see’s the X-box as the consumer level computing device, not PC’s.

This is just a tactical move, and a good one.

Apple really has no play or advantage, unless they can produce a inexpensive 3D gaming/computing/consumer entertainment device.

So far 3D gaming sucks on all Mac’s except the PowerMac and a good video card.

Apple won’t subsidize a X-Box like device like Microsoft does for a loss year after year. Also there won’t be enough 3D games ready even Apple was able to produce one.

I see no advantage with this media download attempt because Hollywood won’t support something without ironclad DRM.

Mac’s still have the ability to screen record with sound, there is no HDCP DRM scheme to Apple monitors.

We are a long way from a movie service, except some old waterdown dust covered junk found in the Hollywood basement.

Sorry folks, if you want the latest movies, you’ll just have to buy them on DVD or via cable.

    Mac’s are media flops.

  13. “what EXACTLY does Apple have for a advantage?

    Apple is shipping.

For Vista, it’s kinda hard to make money on an OS that’s perpetually “due next year”. You can’t sell wares for an OS that’s not out yet.

Didn’t Ballmer himself promise Vista in 2006, no matter what? Wasn’t it expected that vendors would be seriously pissed if Vista missed the ’06 holiday season?

If you’re a PC vendor, what do you do now? Wait and hope the current 2007 schedule holds true? Do you tell your banker and investors that you’re waiting & hoping that MS might really ship Vista for sure this time?

  14. Correction:

So STUPID ASS, always fresh install after a major security exploit.

    Should be

So STUPID ASS, always fresh install and fully update after a major security exploit.

By the way, lots of webmasters and moderators at certain Mac sites have been having lots of fun snooping around in Mac users machines over the last several years of these Mac OS X exploits.

They know your IP address, can send you a Safari exploit through a 1 pixel Quicktime image that runs Ternimal and installs a startup program to wait for you to use your admin password. Then it installs a root kit, opens a port, alters Mac OS x so you think your ports are closed and your firewall is on.

Even turning your iSight camera on to watch your silly @$$ jack off to porn.

Oh yes, it’s true, I speak no bull$hit.

Why do you think I hate Apple so much lately?

No I don’t have iSight, I’m not that stupid.

Mac OS is a insecure POS and we were duped into beleiving it was oh so much better.

  15. Macdude is right, Mac OS X security updates don’t patch a compromised system.

They only patch the original hole.

The reason for this is once a machine get compromised, any number of changes or alerations could have occured, to any program or file.

A complete reinstall of the OS is best, with careful attention to which files your bring back onto the clean system.

Files can be apps, like altered Quicktime files can run code in Ternimal if you run them.
