Analysts warn of flash memory shortage as Apple 25% global flash supply for iPod, iPhone
Wednesday, July 18, 2007 - 02:36 PM EST

"Apple has secured 25-percent of global flash memory production in its drive to meet demand for its iPhone and iPod devices driving flash memory prices to rise, claim analysts atDRAMeXchange," Jonny Evans reports for Macworld UK.

"Apple's move to secure huge quantities of the memory [coincides] with unexpected production snags in the migration to more advanced flash memory manufacturing processes," Evans reports.

"As a huge portion of the existing capacity is being allocated to Apple, 'many downstream vendors have been unable to secure enough flash chips,' the analysts said," Evans reports.

...AND new ultra portable laptops....

Human beings are raping Mother Earth of her flash memories. How can we continue to thoughtlessly use up the earth's supply of flash memory in our endless insatiable lust for more, more, more. If we don't stop now, The Children won't have any flash memories when it's their turn to be grups. Really. I have a graph.

Think of the children before you click that wheel. Bastards.

speaking of ultra portables, I worked for a client yesterday that has a son that has a friend that works for apple. She was planning on buying a macbook, but her sons friend (the guy at apple) said she should wait because soon they were releasing a new laptop model and it was going to be the thinnest, eco-friendly, portable mac ever made...

sure sounds like an 'ultra' portable to me...

I have to admit that - back in the days of Spindler and Amelio and as much of a Macolyte as I might be - I never thought I'd see the day when Apple would have the purchasing power to so completely influence a single commodity in way it does with flash memory.

I worked it out a little while back that Apple is consuming about 40 petabytes (40,000,000 GB) of flash ram every quarter and that's without the iPhone.

If you equate that to fully maxed-out Xserve RAID units (14 x 750GB), my calculation is that you'd need over 280 42U racks each with 147TB delivered by 14 RAID units; 7 racks is about a petabyte; 280 racks is 40 PB.

For those who prefer to think in volume, that's about a six-foot high wall of XServe RAID racks about 190 yards long. Anyway you cut it, that's a lot of storage.

Well, hehe ... I have to agree with ol' Ally on this one - even tho he is part of that devil worshiping demoncrat group. Human beans are raping Mother Earth of flesh memories and that just verges on incestumus relations. And I don't even believe in that Mother Earth thing cause it's of the devil. I know cause God talked to me about it.

Hehe... he talks to me all the time. He even told me that I was his favorite. He told me I was just like a son to him. Hehe ... Guess that makes Jesus my brother. Hehe ... No wonder I'm president.

Won't mother be surprised. You know, I bet I was an emakulate consepshun. Cause - there's no way dad ever made love to that woman.

Yeah, and Apple used to consume most PPC chips in the world too - so fucking what! None of it is recyclable. It is all pollution.

If Apple already has 25% of the available flash memory for it's current production of iPhones and iPods, imagine the percentage a year from now when iPhones are more prominent (and worldwide) and the big iPods are transitioning from hard drive to flash storage. The flash manufacturing companies better ramp up FAST.

@John, point taken, if you include just about everything produced by man. It's not JUST Apple.

Anyway, on to my main point - You are the pollution. Would you please turn yourself in for recycling ASAP.

By the time M$, HP, Dell, Sony, Toshiba, Nintendo, realise what is going on, they will be several years behind Apple inc. because Apple had bought out all the components for the new products that we did not know we needed, (let alone want) and patented the process & end result of the product.

How can the HD dependant Zune turd turn into an iphone look alike when it cannot even get hold of Flash memory? How can Sony in who's background flash memory is manufactured catch up with Apple inc or clone a copy of the iphone, when even they cannot source flash memory?

It is fair to note that they all knew about flash memory, they just didn't know how to maximise it, now they have been shown the way by Apple inc. they find that Apple inc. closed the gate behind them in such a way that it will take them a while to open it!

THINKING DIFFERENTLY!
