AP: Apple’s MacBook should give makers of Windows-only notebooks nightmares

“Apple Computer Inc.’s latest laptop looks sleek, runs fast and should give makers of Windows-based notebooks considerable cause for concern,” Robert Weston reports for The Associated Press.

“The MacBook, which replaces Apple’s iBook consumer notebooks, is the last of the mobile Macs to make the switch to Intel Corp. chips that have powered Windows PCs for years. With extra software, the newer Macs can run Microsoft Corp.’s Windows as well as Apple’s Mac OS X,” Weston reports. “This could spell trouble for notebook makers who can’t offer the best of both worlds, particularly in light of the MacBook’s starting price of $1,099.”

“Running Windows XP via Apple’s free Boot Camp program, the system is felt as fast as any generic laptop PC,” Weston reports. “Programs designed for the new Macs in OS X are just as zippy.”

“The computer’s integrated graphics system shares the main memory. Though my MacBook ran games and other applications without a hitch, gamers will probably want to buy a system with a dedicated graphics card, like the MacBook Pro,” Weston reports. “Overall, the new MacBook is a well-priced laptop that could fit the needs of most consumers. After all, it comes with the simplicity and security of Mac OS X and has many features still in the works for Microsoft’s next-generation OS, Windows Vista.”

“It also comes with the iLife suite that includes iTunes, iPhoto and iMovie – plus a built-in iSight camera for video conferencing,” Weston reports. “Combine the MacBook’s ability to run Windows at native speed with Apple’s renowned knack for elegant hardware and software, and it’s a formula that should give other PC makers nightmares.”

  1. “. . . makers of Windows-only notebooks nightmares”

The one where you think you are falling or the one in which you are trying to run away but you can’t get your legs to move?
    Or just lots of spiders?

  2. They didn’t say Intel Core Duo. They said “Intel Corp. chips.”

I know when you’re reading aloud to yourself Corp. can sound like Core – we’ll forgive you for starting the comments with a stupid post. After all, it’s a little better than “First Post!!!!1!11!”

  3. windows system is addictive when you fall in love with it, you can’t really get out. system itself is very complicated. once you use it for very long time, you will get used to. then it’s really make you to switch to another system. why? windows has curse. it’s so bad.

  4. ^
I know what it reads, idiot.
They article suggests that they’re switching to the same Intel chips that have been in PCs for years, as if a Pentium 4 chip is the same as a Core Duo.

  5. typhoon:
“MDN: Please push the “Windows-only” computers phrase because it says it all. This could become a great term that pushes Macs.”

That wouldn’t be all that accurate. They only come with Windows, but you could still theoretically install Linux on these systems.

  6. Ah, I finally had my first post deleted. All this time I thought MDN liked me. I was somebody! ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”smile” style=”border:0;” />

  7. Ampar:
“Makers of Windows-only notebooks decided for themselves to slow dance with a sweaty Steve Ballmer for eternity. That’s their problem.”

    – That statement is a bit disingenuous considering their limited number of options.

  8. Jon,
I didn’t think about that. The average user, though, would only use the installed OS, except in the case of a Mac booting Windows, I think. But I don’t like anything to be deceptive. “Window’s-only” may or may not be the best choice. How about, “Non-Mac-Bootable?” ;P
    Or, maybe “Tigerless!”
What about “Dashboard-free?” Help me, I’m tapped out.

  9. Everybody should know that there isnt anything great about apple laptops. PC laptops such as dell,HP, Lenevo, and toshiba are much better than macbooks. PC laptops are actually cheap and powerful with high tech specs and can run any software and this is what makes PC laptops successful. PC laptops are very useful for work and for enjoyment, and they are always used for professional jobs. Macbooks have low power, low tech specs, have a low graphic media card, and are very expensive for no good reason. Not everybody wants to spend a lot of money for a low power macbook. Mac OS X tiger isnt that special because it is pretty much the same as Windows XP, but only with better security. You could still easily get antivirus software for windows to fix the security problem. You can do the same ilife, and iwork features on windows XP so mac os x isnt that good as people say it is.

  10. re: store

Somebody set this kid straight, he’s clueless.

“Mac OS X tiger isnt that special because it is pretty much the same as Windows XP, but only with better security.”

Bafflingly ignorant statement. I don’t know where to begin…

  11. re:MF

If you think that mac os x tiger is better than windows, than how come mac os x tiger isnt as popular as windows. All the schools in my city dont use macs because everybody knows that they are garbage. There is no point of apple competing against windows and PC computers because windows and PC are strong computers and also cheap and are used all over the world which makes them successful. If mac os x is better than windows, than why does everybody still continue to use windows. It is kind of lame of how everybody here critizies windows vista, you guys dont even know the real potential of what windows vista could do.

  12. “If mac os x is better than windows, than why does everybody still continue to use windows.”

Because they are brainwashed into using it. They’ve been using it since the early 80’s. It’s all they know and they’re used to it. It’s come on every PC since the 80’s. They had no real choice. Buy a PC, you get Windows. They are used o dealing with viruses and trojans, spyware, worms, malware and rebooting due to super lousy memory and system resource handling.

It’s what businesses use, most people HAVE to use it at work. Again, they have no choice.

  13. . . . you guys dont even know the real potential of what windows vista could do.

Neither do you, since it hasn’t shipped yet. The liklihood that it ever will grows more remote every day. And because you’re a Windoze drone, you don’t have a clue as to what it can’t and will never do.

  14. I am planning to get a new computer, and some of my friends have either PC or macs. I was thinking of getting a mac, but they seem a little too expensive for me so I might get a PC instead. Could you guys tell me the reasons why it would be better to get a mac instead of a PC. Is there a way to buy macs for a cheap price.

Some of my friends tell me to get a PC because they are more powerful than macs because PC have more gigahertz, ram, memory, and they are also cheap. So I am too sure if I still want to get a mac anymore.
