APC Mag reviews Apple’s new 13-inch MacBook Pro: ‘Now is the time to cave into temptation’
Wednesday, June 24, 2009 - 12:00 PM EST

New MacBook Pro"Good things finally come in small packages with the release of Apple's 13-inch MacBook Pro," Adam Turner reports for APC Magazine.

"If you've got an aging old-school white (or black) polycarbonate MacBook, and resisted the lure of the short-lived silver unibody MacBook, now is the time to cave into temptation and upgrade. The 13in MBP is lighter, faster, runs for longer and offers more graphics grunt, plus it offers a swag of new features compared to the MacBooks you could buy this time last year," Turner reports.

"With these features and at this price, the 13in MBP is arguably the best value Mac we've seen in a while. Our only hesitation would be the terrible screen glare. If this is your only concern, it would be worth investigating third party anti-glare options (such as a privacy filters) rather than forgoing the upgrade completely and sticking with your old MacBook," Turner reports.

Full review, which, as a 50% Microsoft-owned outlet, conveniently and glaringly neglects to any mention of Mac OS X, here.

MacDailyNews Take: It's very telling that a Microsoft-backed site can recommend an Apple notebook purely from a hardware standpoint without even mentioning the MacBook Pro's superior Mac OS X operating system or stellar Mac-only software like iLife '09.

Our only hesitation would be the terrible screen glare.

*ducks and runs before all the anti-glossy zealots arrive to froth at the mouth over that point*

Yeah, if you already had a mac, you should get this, but, what if you already had an aging PC? I appreciate the subtle subtext that woulda flown over most peoples heads.

hmm, so does he dislike glossy screens or is he dishing it for not being transflective?

Jun 24, 09 - 11:53 am Comment from: Darkfire

I may not like the glossy screen but Ido think the cons are exaggerated - if I'm in a low light place, I don't mind at all. Trouble is, I'm not, most of the time.

I wish they would just go ahead and offer the Matte screen (anti-glare...whatever) on all the laptops now.

It's obviously do-able and not a big deal since they do it on the 17".

Darkfire, I'm with you. I cannot use a glossy screen.
On Facebook it isn't a problem, but try and retouch a photo in a well lit room when all you can see in the dark areas is your own reflection.

I made a mistake and got a glossy screen and now I have to sit in a dark room in order to do my job.
I'm not some prating fool with a propensity for whining, I'm a lifelong Mac user who is extremely unhappy with not at least being given the option of getting a pro-grade screen. I will NOT be buying an Apple laptop until the matte option available on the one I need: the 15".

So the wanker 'Gabriel' and his ilk with the asinine comments about 'anti-glare zealots' can happily f**k off. If you don't have a problem, fine. Just don't show yourself to be an ***hole by resenting people whose livelihoods depend on their computers.

I like glossy screens. There - I said it! Now throw all your verbal assaults at me that you want. I'm not going to change my preferences just to be fashionable and have something to complain about.

/btw, MBP 17" unibody. s*ck it betches.

Jun 24, 09 - 03:37 pm Comment from: Randian

No matter how loud and foaming-at-the-mouth the anti-gloss screen crowd gets, the fact of the matter is that only 22% of laptop buyers give a crap about the anti-glare option.

Only 22%.

Yes, they are really, really, really loud in their hatred. But that does not make them the majority of the consuming public. (FYI: Just purchased a 17" MBP matte from the Apple Developers Group, but did not--and have not--burst a blood vessel over the issue.)

Randian, if you look at the review of online polls (see http://macmatte.wordpress.com) you'll see that the percentage is on average around 40% - and one recent poll has it at 75%. I'm not saying the 75% poll is representative, nor is the 44% MacPolls repesentative, nor is the 85% Lenovo poll representative -- but it's hard to just sweep them all away. Have a look at the polls at http://macmatte.wordpress.com for yourself, and make up your own mind.

I personally have a Powerbook 12 -- and previously the two things that stopped me upgrading was the lack of Firewire and the glossy screens.

I need the Firewire to sync with my iMac using Target Disk Mode.

Now that they've brought back Firewire, I need a matte screen. All these matte replacements, such as film, are very difficult to apply without making your Mac look like crud because of bubbles and creases when applying such a large piece of film. Also, the TechRestore service, according to the reviews, shows minor damage where they have to prise of the glass. I don't want a dented Mac -- no matter how minor the damage is. Why should I have to put up with this when Apple can charge me even $100 more for a matte screen?
