Apple and China Mobile in final stages of talks to bring iPhone to China
Tuesday, September 02, 2008 - 03:14 PM EST

"China Mobile, the country's largest handset operator, is in the final stages of talks with Apple to launch the iPhone in China, the world's largest mobile phone market, state media reported Tuesday," AFP reports.

"The two companies are likely to conclude the talks soon, the 21 Century Business Herald reported, citing unnamed sources," AFP reports.

China Mobile "had 608.4 million mobile users at the end of July," AFP reports.

MacDailyNews Note: Apple's current Total Addressable Market (TAM) is currently around 660 million, so a deal with China Mobile would roughly double the Apple's iPhones' TAM to around 1.27 billion.

And they are currently doing approx 800k a month in sales? (last rumor I heard about iPhone sales, since Apple hasn't released official numbers) I wouldn't be surprised if after China and Russia join in Apple is selling 2m+ a month, or would be if supply/manufacture didn't become an issue.

Based on the market reaction to good news for AAPL, this ought to drive the stock down at least $20./share. Ok, shorts get your lies and half truths ready and Marketwatch, be sure to get out the list of article titles regarding Job's health, and fire spitting iPods and don't forget to use the word 'woes' at least twenty times in the article.

But the important question is, will it love you long time?

I travel throughout China about four times a year (in fact I am in China right now–Thank God the iTunes blockage is over). I can say this... I've been over here with a Mac and iPod for many years, and nobody gave my Apple products a glance...

When I pull out the iPhone though, people start looking at it, similar reaction to what it was like when it debuted in the US. They now what it is, and are very interested in it. "Appo, Appo" is all I hear. I've seen Chinese people with a few unlocked iPhones as well.
