Apple applies for patents on face recognition, more
Thursday, July 09, 2009 - 03:12 PM EST

"The US Patent and Trademark Office has published another batch of Apple patent applications, relating to a variety of technologies," iPodNN reports.

"Among these is face recognition, which in Apple's description could be used to detect one or more users of a device without requiring active input," iPodNN reports. "The technology could further be used to authorize control, or initiate commands."

iPodNN reports, "Miscellaneous patents cover concepts like monitoring devices, which could be related to the MobileMe Find My iPhone feature, and a similar idea for a 'personal items network,' which could track more precise object movement in fields like sports, shipping and medicine."

iPodNN reports, "Apple has also applied to patent a hybrid antenna assembly with directly-fed antenna slots, combining Wi-Fi and Bluetooth signals onto one antenna, while leaving another dedicated to 3G cellular broadcasts."

Make sense. Another security feature other "smart"-phones can hope to catch up to... but what happens if someone made a mask of your face to wear (the gruesome scene from Silence of the Lambs comes to mind...)?

@Freebeer..

Was thinking the same thing..though probably not a mask but a photo cut-out of one's face might be possibly even more doable and cheaper..

There's only one problem I see with this: Lenovo has already done this. I don't know if they're still using it, 'cause I haven't seen a Lenovo laptop in several months, but they had it on their laptops for at least a year. Though, given the patent office's protocols lately, I don't see Apple not getting it if Lenovo didn't already patent it.

@M:
Yes, meat masks are so... expensive.
