Apple approves ‘Cannabis’ iPhone app designed to help users locate marijuana
Monday, July 20, 2009 - 09:35 AM EST

"Apple has approved an iPhone and iPod application designed to help marijuana users find suitable supplies," Nick Spence reports for Macworld UK.

"The catch, the application points to medical suppliers and not the decidedly dodgy types spotted hovering outside dark doorways late at night," Spence reports.

"Cannabis for iPhone and iPod touch (US$2.99) offers locations to medical cannabis collectives and cooperatives, doctors, clinics, attorneys, organisations, and other patient services in the thirteen states that have passed medical marijuana (cannabis) legislation in the US," Spence reports.

You'd think images of men and women dying painful deaths from cancer would be enough to raise awareness that medical marijuana is a legitimate treatment and not a punchline, but this app and the news stories that follow will probably do as much or more for the "cause."

Just what you MAC hippies need. What's next? The Tree Huggin' Lid Locator app? I'd like to see you MAC sheep pass a drug test for employment in the hallowed halls of business. Cubicles and Microsoft's powerful Office suite are too dangerous for the drug-impaired. Why do you think they call it dope? Straighten out and fly right MAC lemmings. I gotta get back to this Excel spreadsheet.

If you can't find medical marijuana, consider the synthetic cannabinoid JWH-018, while it is still legal in the US.

Jul 20, 09 - 09:56 am Comment from: Toasty

@g5mac

if you don't like Apple, go rant on a Windoz forum. Or did you not notice the name of this web site?

Jul 20, 09 - 09:58 am Comment from: Forrest, Forrest Gump

Later, you will be visited by an Ajnag LLC's representative to offer you a key code to locate your nearest Ajnag "medical supplier". A "dodgy type spotted hovering outside a dark doorway late at night".
The key code will cost you little more than 2.99...

Ridiculous. Yet I can't look at boobies on an iPhone app?

Jul 20, 09 - 10:08 am Comment from: qka

In the US, regardless of State Law, cannabis is still illegal everywhere according to Federal Law. Regardless of whether you are pro- or anti- cannabis, that's the law.

Interesting that Apple would aid and abet the breaking of the law by distributing this app.

My prediction is that it won't last the week, now that its availability is being widely publicized.

You've got to wonder how many sales of the app will be to the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and other law enforcement agencies.

Jul 20, 09 - 10:11 am Comment from: TheConfuzed1

Marijuana is a legitimate MEDICINE.

It does less harm than tobacco or alcohol, and it doesn't have the side effects of pharmaceudicals.

It's ridiculous that it's criminalized, and people are starting to realize that.

In California, we have assembly bill 390, which is in favor of legalization fo recreational use. This time it's up to politicians to vote, so who knows how it will turn out, but recent surveys show that if it was up to the populace, it would pass.

Our state is broke, and is not benefiting at all from it's NUMBER ONE EXPORT!

It is projected that legalization will produce 1.4 billion in annual revenue, with an addition 1-2 billion in annual savings by no longer criminalizing it.

This is exactly what California needs, and you better believe that other states will soon be on board if it passes.

And if it doesn't pass... It will happen eventually. Public awareness is at an all-time "high." wink

Jul 20, 09 - 10:28 am Comment from: TheConfuzed1

@qka--

The feds don't need this app.

These suppliers are licensed and documented.

Obama has stated that his administration will not be raiding state-sanctioned suppliers. It's the one thing he's done right.

Jul 20, 09 - 11:02 am Comment from: John B

Am I paranoid, or could this be a way for the feds to track medical marijuana users and/or dispensaries? Every time you use it, your data are recorded somewhere to be used as evidence against you. After I read that article about Apple working with the mafia to make some poor guy be a fashion model, I wouldn't put anything past them. Then again, maybe I'm just high.

I find it amazing that emotions run so high (pun intended) when discussing cannabis, but people seem to take for granted the widespread abuse of cannabinoid and opiate derived compounds that are prescribed as pharmaceuticals. As of a couple of years ago, you have to submit your name to get cough suppressants containing pseudoephedrine because people cook it up into a recreational drug. I wonder if the outcry would have been greater if Rush had been smoking pot rather than popping oxycontin?

ZuneTang always provides a "fair and balanced" view of the Mac community. He's a Mac user who has lots of fun playing devil's advocate by pounding the pro-Microsoft, anti-Mac point of view. Just relax and enjoy his comments.

To those of you who live in California and the west, and who make late night munchie runs to your local Jack In the Box fast-food restaurants, consider our new iJack app soon to be in the iTunes App Store. It's just the thing for when you get a late night hankering for 30 tacos. I mean, 30's a reasonable number when you have the munchies, yes?

MidWest Mac said: " this app and the news stories that follow will probably do as much or more for the "cause."

Unfortunately not. Media will simply use this as bait for hits by ratcheting up the sensationalism amid all the usual inane moral assertions and interview from your local musclebound Cop who declares Marijuana to be "the most dangerous drug on earth" while linking the use of it to gangs.

Whoa

Just tonight on CBS News with Katie

They ran this promo for tomorrow morning's Early Show

"Finding Drugs Online - The Marijuana iApp"

Or something like that

I dunno, we see tomorrow morning, and as time goes by

If the Main Stream Media is picking up on this

And due to the nature of the subject matter

This might get very interesting

And yet my app is on day #22 with no word from Apple.

Actually kudos to apple for this approval for FOR ONCE letting users and the market decide. Now, please, can I have the same courtesy. (My app contains nothing possibly offensive.... and doesn't even USE the cell network... and doesn't threaten anybody's revenue stream... etc. etc.)

Jul 22, 09 - 11:30 am Comment from: Road Warrior

Zune Thang, I have to agree with what you say "I'd like to see you MAC sheep pass a drug test for employment in the hallowed halls of business." I know I would not even try, I hear they serve cock, uh coke at those tests. It's probably why you do so well at them.

Now while you say that "Cubicles and Microsoft's powerful Office suite are too dangerous for the drug-impaired." they are basically too dangerous for anyone.

And why do they call it dope? That's easy, cause Microsoft has the trademark of FUD (or FUDGE if you are Zune packer uh, squirter.)
