Apple today announced financial results for its fiscal 2010 fourth quarter ended September 25, 2010. The Company posted record revenue of $20.34 billion and net quarterly profit of $4.31 billion, or $4.64 per diluted share. These results compare to revenue of $12.21 billion and net quarterly profit of $2.53 billion, or $2.77 per diluted share, in the year-ago quarter. Gross margin was 36.9 percent compared to 41.8 percent in the year-ago quarter. International sales accounted for 57 percent of the quarter’s revenue.
MacDailyNews Note: After-hours trading in Apple shares was halted just ahead of the earnings release. Trading will resume at 4:50 pm ET.
Apple sold 3.89 million Macs during the quarter, a 27 percent unit increase over the year-ago quarter. The Company sold 14.1 million iPhones in the quarter, representing 91 percent unit growth over the year-ago quarter. Apple sold 9.05 million iPods during the quarter, representing an 11 percent unit decline from the year-ago quarter. The Company also sold 4.19 million iPads during the quarter.
MacDailyNews Take: iPad number seems low. Supply constraints or was there a slack off in demand? We should find out soon enough in the conference call…
“We are blown away to report over $20 billion in revenue and over $4 billion in after-tax earnings—both all-time records for Apple,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO. “iPhone sales of 14.1 million were up 91 percent year-over-year, handily beating the 12.1 million phones RIM sold in their most recent quarter. We still have a few surprises left for the remainder of this calendar year.”
“We’re thrilled with the performance and strength of our business, generating almost $5.7 billion in cash flow from operations during the quarter,” said Peter Oppenheimer, Apple’s CFO, in the press release. “Looking ahead to the first fiscal quarter of 2011, we expect revenue of about $23 billion and we expect diluted earnings per share of about $4.80.”
Analysts’ consensus estimates called for Apple to report $4.06 EPS on $18.86 billion in revenue. On July 20, 2010, Apple CFO Peter Oppenheimer guided for “revenue of about $18 billion” and “diluted earnings per share of about $3.44.”

Every time Apple does anything official the stock price goes down. Always. Who cares? The stock market is not the true test of any worth: use of the product is.

They didn’t sell as many iPads and iPhones as expected. Supply constraint. I told you it had good a good chance to drop. Check the history of AAPL at earnings. Does not do well. Always cover yourself on the downside. Love the products but never trade with your emotions.

Major component supplier to Apple announced recently that they are raising prices to Apple & others it supplies. Means either lower profit margins or higher prices in the near term.

They didn’t sell enough iPads and iPhones because of supply problems. No matter how well we want it to do the stock has a history of doing poorly at earnings. It’s a fact. As I said yesterday, I covered myself on the downside. Love the products but never trade with your emotions.

Microsoft reports next week. Many expect this will be the first quarter in which they will report lower numbers than Apple.
And AAPL follows its traditional path on quarterly report, tanking 5% on lower-than-expected guidance. Everyone decided they had a healthy run from the prior report and want to cash out some. They’ll be back in few weeks, though, and we’ll be setting ourselves up for the same pattern.

I expect the iPad is suffering because it doesn’t run OS X… it must put legions of Mac users off buying. I suspect this is what is behind the Air revamp… that vital netbook market is proving a tough and elusive one for Apple to break into.

As usual, the market is punishing Apple for some perceived miss on GMs and iPads.

P/E looks fantastic at $318 per share. Apple just had a quarter that would beat several years put together earlier in the decade.
Consider year-over-year increases of 66.5% in revenue and 67.5% in earnings per diluted share, and the iPhone was already going strong with the 3GS last year. Consider $4.31B in net quarterly profit added to Apple’s hoard of cash and short term securities. Consider the spread of the iPad (and, soon, iPhone 4) to Verizon and other U.S. providers. Consider the continued penetration of international markets. And thing long term, fellow Apple users and investors. Think long term.

As C1 can tell you, the problem is not with with iPad OS. Actually, the reason it does work so well is because Apple is the only involved company throughout the whole process. That is why “it just works”. Unfortunately, once you step outside and have to deal with some one else, the problems arise. I speak specifically of having to deal with AT&T. You are tied to their data and pricing plan. I know wi-fi is free but i’m not always near a starbucks or mcdonalds. This is outside of Apples’ control and the reason people have been waiting for the verizon alternative.
@C1. I hope I can call you C1 after so long.

I love how everyone whines about how the stock ALWAYS gets punished after earnings, yet it isn’t true. Sometimes it does, other times it doesn’t. To say that it ALWAYS does is just flat out wrong.
Besides, give it a week. Unless you are planning on selling your shares tomorrow, this is a non issue.

Gee, I don’t know who said it ALWAYS gets punished after earnings but it does quite often. That should be enough forewarning for most folks. C’mon, Gene Munster (an avid AAPL supporter) spoke of his guarded estimate on AAPL earnings 2 days ago. Buy low sell high. Always protect yourself when a stock has a huge run up. Especially AAPL at earnings. It will rebound but a lot of folks who went into earnings “naked” got creamed. Fact.

Hey, maroon (Bug Bunny allusion intentional) . . . let’s see what Microsh*t (MSFT) does next week, OK? Wanna bet they don’t grow 70% Y-O-Y within this past quarter? Got a thousand dollars you want to risk?
No? Hmmm. No money where your mouth is, huh?
Don’t forget, Dumbfsck: Apple is still (even at $300) ‘WAY bigger in market cap than the Redmond Runt and the Dell Dingleberry put together! And as for RIMM . . . . . HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH! I’ve got your Blackberry and Nokia phones right here. (Guess where I’m pointing?)

Apple always gets hit. No worries. Apple sold as many iPads as they could make. Supply didn’t even out until September. The only “problem” with the iPads was that they couldn’t make enough of them.

Can I just point out that, if you’re complaining that AAPL has “plummeted” to $299 and change, that you are – by any known standard – a fscking idiot.
AAPL only went past this level at the start of trading on 10/12, six days ago, so – unless you’re a short-term investor – you’re still well ahead of the game.
Investing may be similar to gambling, but not if you look at it in the right way.

You miss the point. Sell into earnings and buy back $18 cheaper after hours. Check the ticker right now. Sell at $318. Buy back at $300. That’s an $18/share profit and you were able to buy back more shares because it was cheaper. Last Tuesday has nothing to do with it. You only make or lose money when you SELL THE STOCK!! Last Tuesday or next Monday are meaningless. You can own AAPL at $400, but if you don’t ever sell it you can’t profit. It’s simple. And yes if you had some downside protection today you could have limited your losses by selling protection. Thus if you were “naked” you got creamed. Have you ever owned securities?

Well Chrissy, Apple has an installed Mac user base of many, many millions – so selling slightly more iPads than Macs in a single quarter doesn’t really support the argument you are hinting at. I know quite a few Mac users and not one has bought an iPad. Some have hacked netbooks as throwaway, throwinyourbag devices – it meets a need very well… it is cheap enough to be no great shakes if beaten up or lost – and cost-effective enough to upgrade with a new model in a coupla years time.
That’s the area Apple hasn’t cracked and which iPad may fail to crack. And I would think it is significant.

You’re an idiot. I certainly didn’t get creamed. Since I don’t have the attention span of a goldfish and don’t both with piddly little 6% swing trades, it’s not really a problem. You can say anything you like in hindsight, but you don’t know which way the stock is going until it goes there.
If you can make money at it, fine, be my guest. But just like you don’t gain anything until you sell, I didn’t lose anything either. Don’t be a jackass.

You’re talking utter nonsense. I know many Mac and non-Mac users who bought iPads. And that means absolutely *dick*, because our own little personal experiences don’t amount to anything compared to the 4 million + iPads Apple sold. They sold as many as they could build. They literally couldn’t sell any more.
But that aside… If you’re saying it’s a problem that Mac users specifically aren’t buying them, then you’re also just as wrong. That means iPad buyers weren’t already Apple users.
Utter tripe.

The last time Apple stock dropped after an earnings call was, 2008.
However, stock drops after good news is par for Apple traders who get all caught up in hype leading up to an Apple event, who buy on a hunch, and follow the shorts when the sell-off begins.
You know the kind, who sprays the place the moment she says put it in.

Seven million iPads sold so far. Who wold have predicted this when it was announced earlier this year? It is laughable that some say the numbers seem low. It is only recently that production has been able to meet demand. And 14.1 million iPhones, that is an amazing number. This next quarter is going to be frightening. We are likely to see a big uptick in iPods sold, more iPads (likely 6 million), over 4 million Macs, a million AppleTVs, and over 15 million iPhones. Stock price of over $400 is not far off.

CHECK THIS OUT
I was listening the live conference call and i noticed something that nobody else have. Tim Cook just admitted that Apple will have multicarrier strategies in all countries by the end of 2010.
That statement is part of the Q&A [towards the end]. If you go to the apple website you cam hear it again at around 55:25 the question about multicarrier strategies starts
Tim says “we have about 166 relationships [means carriers] in about 89 countries…we went from a single carrier to a multicarrier strategy” and then talks about germany and t-mobile
Then the analyst persists and asks if they gonna add more carriers
Tim replies: “With iphone 4 we’re in 85 of the 89 countries”… [Tim MEANS that they have multicarrier strategy in 85 of 89 countries]…”and i believe we will be in all 89 by the end of the year”
Currently Apple does have a multicarrier strategy in all but 4 countries.
Could this mean that on Wednesday we are gonna have a ‘One more thing’ by SJ announcing Verizon????

We’ ll be back over yesterday’s close price before you know it.
It’ll take a few weeks if not sooner for the analysts and pundits to digest Apple’s forthcoming event news and the substance of the conference call.
They’ll try and drop the stock with negative spin/FUD induced selling then buy in again, for the blockbuster holiday quarter.
Apple’s going to kick some serious ass this Christmas season and next year.
We’ ll be back over yesterday’s close price before you know it.

I’d join the conversation, but I’m too busy still
searching for those 69 cent songs on iTunes.

Sharp ears dude. Let’s hope this pans out on Weds.
The iPad is already a success and it seems that the AppleTV is taking off too. Xmas is going to be a cool quarter for Apple.

Right you are G4. That’s why you never buy on a hunch. Or with your emotions. That’s why I sold mine and bought it back when it dropped. It’s not about being long. It’s about knowing when to take profit. Buying stock and holding it doesn’t make you any money. You have to sell it at some point or you will never make a profit, which is why you buy stock in the first place. It’s an investment. I buy AAPL products because they make the best. I buy AAPL stock to make money. One doesn’t have anything to do with the other. But I’m sure you understand that right?

Wow yeah, and look at it now… By morning it’s down a whole 2.25%… Yeah, I’m feeling OH SO CREAMED!!!!
You don’t know the difference between trading and investing.

That’s right dopey. I sold it at 318 and bought it back at 300. Now it’s 310. Profit from 318-300=$18/share profit. Purchased again at 300 and up $10/share now. That is investing fool. That is not trading. Again, you only make or lose money on stock when you sell it. If you never sell it it does you no good. You must be what, 15 years old? The more you post the more everyone sees how much you don’t know about anything. I think I hear your momma calling.
