Apple boosts Euro .Mac speed
Tuesday, November 20, 2007 - 03:01 PM EDT

.Mac"Apple has responded to .Mac critics and implemented improvements that should speed up European users upload and download speeds, at least when using the .Mac Web Gallery," Jonny Evans reports for Macworld UK.

"Apple has now implemented a number of enhancements that should make Web Gallery pages load 'noticeably faster,'" Evans reports. "The company warns that actual page load times will vary depending on a user's connection speed and Mac setup, 'but most customers should notice an immediate improvement,' it promised."

"The company has done nothing to boost up/download speeds for users of iDisk or any other .Mac services, "at this time," the company said, hinting that such improvements may emerge," Evans reports.

That's great, if only they'd ever get around to boosting iDisk speeds, then they'd have something to brag about. iDisk has been useless in recent weeks.

The proof is in the pudding! Who is eating it?

In my couple of years of experience with .Mac, the dialogue box and progress bar that appear while copying files into iDisk folders have always acted strangely. For a 32MB file being uploaded via DSL, for example, a solid progress bar flashes across, but then a striped progress bar associated what would seem to be the final short step of "Closing file..." all but hangs for the several minutes it takes to actually complete the upload. If it were not for the blinking activity lights on my router, I would suspect that the process was completely stalled.

I agree. iDisk in Europe is horribly slow. I really can't upload anything too large.

No noticeable improvement on my .Mac gallery. The speed is slow so that it is practically unusable. This is not acceptable for a fee-based service - particularly when free alternatives are so fast. Time for Apple to get its act together.

Doesn't sound like Apple really fixed the problem. Apple might have to mirror the .Mac content in Europe to give users across the pond what they paid for...

Macs don't work right with much over dial-up speeds!

Just uploaded several (~60) photos to my iWeb site.
There was a definite improvement in speed.

Well hoo-fucking-ray!

I'm one of those who paid for .Mac and couldn't connect to the sucker even once because it was so slooeewww. I gave up after a week and didn't ask for a refund, figuring the company must need the money more than me to sell such a crappy service in my neck of the woods.

Imagine that! Charity for Apple!

Message to non-US users: Get some feedback from local users before shelling out for dot-Mac or the only thing you'll be uploading is your moolah.
