Apple buys 9 more acres in Cupertino

Apple Store“Apple Inc. has bought nine acres in Cupertino from Kevin Wu’s Pacific Resources Development company, according to county records… Santa Clara County Assessor’s Office online records list the value of the two properties — at 10300 and 10400 North Tantau Avenue — at about $16 million,” Cody Kraatz reports for Media News.

Apple “also owns a 50-acre parcel on the other side of North Tantau Avenue where it is expected to build a campus for up to 3,500 of its employees who currently work in buildings spread around the city,” Kraatz reports.

  1. This is actually HUGE news. I remember reading an investment book that mentioned to keep an eye on the parking lots. When companies have parking lots that are full into the night and weekends, they are going through a growth phase.

Using the same thought process, when they buy up 9 acres, they are very optimistic about their future. To me, this says that they are going to be adding A LOT more employees. That also means new product lines and a lot more growth. Great time to own shares.

This information would show growth over the next 2-5 years.

  2. Yeah – go Apple! Buy some bloody land, build some more bloody labs, employ some more bloody software engineers and stop bloody delaying stuff!!! ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”angry” style=”border:0;” />

    Please…

  3. No, the land is not for parking spaces or research facilities or anything else that is even remotely mundane and useful. Apple is building a theme park with all our favorite Apple characters (Moof the Dogcow, Sad Mac, Steve Jobs), low carbon footprint rides, deep-fried organic foods, and music piped in from iTunes. C’mon, kids, we’re going to Apple World!

  4. Dolita,
I hope you are kidding… 4 months vs. 4 years? I’m going to go out on a sturdy limb here and suggest that the new features coming for Leopard (such as full multi-touch integration, core animation driven interfaces, and much, much more are going to completely change the face of personal computer use in the next 3 years. I can wait, Tiger’s great. It’ll give me time to have fun with my iPhone over the summer.

  5. It’s for massive storage and distribution.
They’re building their online media store and space to house servers and RAIDs, encoders for user submitted video …
Actually, not just for media, for everything.
It’s the beginning of the age of purely online computing.

  6. 4 months, 4 full months of delay. Apple is doomed, Leopard is like Vista, delayed and delayed and just a piece of crap.

Oh wait. Vista was delayed over 4 years and Tiger already smokes Vista.

Pfffffft. I must have had a nightmare. 4 month? Nothing to see about it. Leopard already smokes Tiger in the latest release. With 4 more months it will be pure gold OS.

  7. @Investor

There is no need to go counting cars in the carpark matey. Apple are quite public about their financials you know, and the numbers tell the story all by themselves…

There will be another set of number in 10 days or so…

  8. “Apple are quite public about their financials you know, and the numbers tell the story all by themselves…”

Well most of the time except when executives are making up board meetings, or under recording what they’re paying themselves.

  9. Hopefully a few buildings come with those 9 acres.

Yes it does by the way.

The two properties stradle Route 280, one on each side.

So Apple can put up two big signs, one on each side of the major highway to gleam maximum exposure.

    It fits Steve Jobs ego perfectly. ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”smile” style=”border:0;” />

    oppps, glad I’m using a proxy. ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”wink” style=”border:0;” />

Way too modest for Steve’s tastes. Try this:

Build twin 1984-foot tall super-skyscrapers, one on each side of 280.

Then hang a 77-story tall cube between the towers.

Completely cover each face of the cube with a massive Cinema display (including the top and bottom).

Have the cube be the center of a multimedia extravaganza, including animated Apple logos, Apple infomercials, Pixar trailers, Stevenotes, etc. All driven by a single TV.

And piss on MS’s wimpy little Redmond campus.

    What the heck. If you’re gonna dream, dream big. ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”smile” style=”border:0;” />

  11. Nine acres in Cupertino (anywhere in Silicon Valley) is VERY expensive. The city of Cupertino needs to take care of its #1 tax payer.

Regarding making fun of Vista, Vista deserves ridicule. It’s so bad that Apple took advantage by delaying Leopard. If Vista had been excellent or even reasonably competent, Apple probably would have removed some unfinished Leopard features and reduced testing efforts to get Leopard out there as soon as possible. Instead, there is no huge advantage to getting Leopard out there sooner. Windows switchers don’t care if it’s Tiger or Leopard as long as it’s not Vista; they’ll still buy the Mac now. Current Mac users aren’t going to go out and buy a Vista PC because Leopard was delayed a few months; they’ll wait. And Apple gets to finish all the intended features and test thoroughly, without burning out its employees. I don’t see a downside. So be happy folks; when Leopard arrives, it will be even more awesome (thanks to Vista).

  12. the real story is Apple wants to widen the gap between Vista and 10.5 and is adding more tech that needs new hardware that is now in the pipeline

multi-touch is only a small part of the story \\

things never seen on any platform is so close — the rumor sites focused on this is a great plan and the iphone cover will futher the smoke screen

if vista had been even a little better 10.5 would have been released on time

this holiday season you ewill need every spare dollar you can have for Apple …. the first 30years was not a joke

………………………………. think about it …. doesn’t it feel like apple is just starting to let all that secret R and D …. out ?? we are talking about deep deep UI changes that are years ahead anything ever seen ………………. when using APPLE home electronics you will have no idea what an OS or an app is … or having to save and blah blah balh

    think star strek

computer …….. show the world that the MS slaves need freedom they are begging for it …….

  13. there is no huge advantage to getting Leopard out there sooner.

The chance to permanently bury Windows sounds like a huge opportunity to me!

While I agree that Leopard needs to be done right & not be rushed to market, Apple shouldn’t be taking their sweet time at it either.

Apple had set a tremendous example with Mac OS X. While MS ran around like the Keystone Kops trying to get Vista out, Apple cooly & professionally turned out regular OS X updates. There is simply no comparison between the two.

Apple, don’t lose your discipline just because MS lost theirs. There’s no sportsmanship in this game; when your competition is down you finish them off.

  14. > The chance to permanently bury Windows sounds like a huge opportunity to me!

That’s not going to happen overnight even if Leopard was release in January. Once Leopard is released, Apple really can’t add any major features to Mac OS X for another 2-3 years. It’s better to take a few extra months to include and test all the planned features, top secret and otherwise. That way, over the next 2-3 years, the “permanently bury Windows” process can really begin, since Windows will remain frozen at Vista for the next 5-6 years.

I still think Apple decided to include some more “top secret” features and delay the release, because so few Windows customers were rushing out to upgrade to Vista. It was the perfect opportunity to create a smoke screen by blaming it on iPhone.

  15. “Have the cube be the center of a multimedia extravaganza, including animated Apple logos, Apple infomercials, Pixar trailers, Stevenotes, etc. All driven by a single TV.”

Who wants to watch crappy low resolution ads?

  16. This has been in the works for a while.
Apple has been planning to build a new larger campus so they need to buy up properties that are close together so they can put it all together to make one big property.

Steve Jobs went to the Cupertino city counsel to propose this idea.
He said that Apple could go somewhere else for cheaper land but, Apple loves being in the city of Cupertino. The main reason for building the new campus is because of efficiency. Apple has a lot of buildings spread all around the surrounding area of Apple HQ now and everybody need to travel back and forth to and from the HQ.
They are going to keep the main HQ where they are at now but also build a new huge campus that can house more people from these other departments.

  17. Seems that only Fox remembered the video clip of Steve last year, or was it before that? going in front of the city council thanking them and announcing that Apple was doubling its property size in Cupertino, as right now, Apple had employees scattered all over the city. This way they could keep them all in one spot.
