Apple celebrates iTunes Store’s 5th birthday; touts 10 million song catalog
Monday, April 28, 2008 - 04:03 PM EDT

"Apple on Monday celebrated the fifth anniversary of iTunes with a look at back at all 'all of the great music, video, and exclusives' that users discovered on iTunes and highlighting the songs and shows that defined each year," MacNN reports.

"On its iTunes Store, Apple offered a brief history along with a collection of 'best sellers.' The company, which launched iTunes on April 28, 2003, claims grew its music catalog of more than 200,000 songs and a handful of exclusive tracks to more than 10 million, according to info available at the online store -- up 66 percent from the 6 million song catalog announced in early April," MacNN reports.

"Earlier this month, the company announced that the iTunes Store surpassed Wal-Mart to become the number one music retailer in the US based on data from January and February of 2008. Apple also touted that it had served over 50 million customers and sold more than four billion songs," MacNN reports.

FANTASTIC. I think we MDN readers should go out and buy "I Touch Myself" by the Divinyls to celebrate. Since we all probably own an iPod Touch. hehe

That would be funny to see if we could affect that song's rating among top songs by doing it.

Congrats. Now go and triple your movie catalog!

(I know it's not Apple's fault).

I'd do it. It's only 99 cents. Good way to start of iTunes 5th anniversary. Then on the sixth, we an all purchase, "Another One Bites the Dust". To celebrate the closure of all those iTunes killer initiatives the labels foolish started.

Based on hardware units sold, I think "Harlem Shuffle", "Curly Shuffle", "Cupid Shuffle", "Lido Shuffle", "The E Street Shuffle" or even "Shuffle Off To Buffalo" would be better sellers.

Well, Johnny Otis is finally in the catalogue now. He was a long time getting there, too.

I just wish I could get music from around the world in the American Store. I don't see why iTunes is not a one stop shop for all your music regardless of culture.

Apr 28, 08 - 07:53 pm Comment from: lee

Agreed, dallas.

Maybe it's because Apple are arrogant Americans and don't think it's important?

Lee, you're in the UK right?

It's very easy to be critical of a culture from afar.

Come over here and you'll see good, bad and all sorts in between.
From what I hear of my home land it's become a country of yobs.
I try to see the good in both lands, although it is tricky sometimes.

And let's not forget, SJ is an American!

iTunes (the software) has been around longer, but I can't believe the iTunes Store has ONLY been around five years. If feels like the a lot LONGER.

Mac+ "MORE STORES WORLDWIDE

First, that's an awesome way to spell "thank you" I'll have to remember that one. Second, I read that Apple planned to open 48 new stores in Calandar 2008 (They are already slightly over 200, so this will be about 25% increase).

Half of these will be stores outside the US, including the first in mainland China, Australia, and Switzerland.

Why does it take so long to get those royalties sorted out? Why does one need to go through Belgian negociations to offer material whose author AND performers are in the US anyway?

I'd be perfectly happy with some TV shows that are available on the US iTunes Store (I appreciate the fact, though that for the general public a concerted effort to offer local shows is necessary).

Want iTunes Store in India.

1000 new Hindi films every year. 100 years of Film history. Avg 5 songs in one film. This is only in Hindi

Add 50 more regional films, would end up 10000 films in one year.

Apple we are waiting.....
