Apple CEO Steve Jobs plans new 50-acre campus in California
Wednesday, April 19, 2006 - 03:46 PM EST

"Apple Computer Inc. is planning to build a new, 50-acre campus near its present headquarters in Cupertino, California, company Chief Executive Steve Jobs said. 'What's happened at Apple is that our business has basically tripled in the last five or six years,' Jobs said on Tuesday evening at a Cupertino city council meeting, which was recorded and viewable as an archived Webcast. He said the company 'has gone from $6 billion in sales to $20 billion in sales, basically.' Analysts expect Apple to post $20.3 billion in revenue for its fiscal 2006 ending in September, according to Reuters Estimates," Reuters reports.

"Jobs said it would likely take three to four years to design and build the campus that could accommodate 3,000 to 3,500 employees. An Apple spokesman, who was present at the meeting, confirmed the company's plans to build the second campus," Reuters reports. "Jobs said that, in addition to its current Cupertino headquarters, Apple employees are spread among 30 other buildings. 'We've rented every scrap of building we could find in Cupertino,' Jobs said, who noted that Apple had recently purchased the nine separate, contiguous parcels.Apple plans to raze the buildings now on the property and design and build new ones, Jobs said. The new campus will be about a mile away from its current headquarters."

I hope those buildings aren't historical.

One campus for the iPods, one for the computers...

Apr 19, 06 - 04:05 pm Comment from: radiohead

Not many of those -- Cupertino was, just a generation ago, plum orchards.

Apr 19, 06 - 04:11 pm Comment from: Hey, zupchuck

...and one campus to rule them all?
wink

after the buildings are finished, Steve will tell the contractors to remove the facades and do them over because he won't like the aesthetics of the materials.

Apr 19, 06 - 04:18 pm Comment from: earthquakes

i hope it's better than the Pixar campus and i really hope it's earthquake-proof. i just read something yesterday on the anniversary of the big san fran quake that another one's coming, it's jsut a matter of when.

Apr 19, 06 - 04:59 pm Comment from: shake rattle & roll

i really hope it's earthquake-proof.

When you build near known natural hazards, you'd better design for the worst. There's another big hurricane coming at New Orleans too, it's just a matter of when. If anything these disasters have taught us how to build better (it's eerie to think how many people gave their lives for today's building codes).

As for Apple's expansion plans, I hope they've fully thought this out, and that they really need the space. Sales growth does not necessarily mean a need for personnel growth. Nobody wants to see Apple expand carelessly & turn itself into a Microsoft morass.

Apr 19, 06 - 05:09 pm Comment from: Anon

We do need the space, badly. My building is a satelite building across from the current main campus, and every day it's a race to see who can get here earliest, because the last 20 people or so to arrive end up having to park a good distance away because the parking lot is full.

That's got to be one of the most mindless things I've EVER read.

"I thought it was an Infinite Loop."

LMAO

That's classic!

Apr 19, 06 - 06:36 pm Comment from: PencilNeckGeek

A "infinite loop" can be as tiny as a electron orbiting a nucleous. It has nothing to do with cubic feet of much needed office space.

Where else would they put all of the Adobe/Macromedia employees?

More space to build more aluminum boxes to run Vista.

Hidden from the news today is Apple's true plans to conclude OS development with Leopard, keep it going for the pitiful few faithful to run along side the millions upon millons runing Vista & her successors on hardware build by everyone, the most expensive of which will be Steve's.

Saw about half dozen PC magazines at the airport today all fully engaged in the massive build up to Vista release - whenever it happens - which will sweep the world with the fiction that will become fact that it's the finest ever.

Didn't notice MDN's coverage of the gigantic deal with China & M$Soft. Dominance is total.

Dear truth hurts,

If you're going to write fantasy, the least you could do is learn the craft. Your drivel is less than compelling.

Truth Hurts,
You are so delusional it's funny.

Apr 19, 06 - 10:25 pm Comment from: Cubert

Apple has bought so much real estate recently it's crazy. They have something big under their sleeve. This isn't just about iPod and Mac sales - something else is afoot.

Apr 19, 06 - 10:46 pm Comment from: Cubert

Steve actually looks pretty good in the video. At the last two keynote addresses (MacWorld in January and the smaller address in Feb.), he kept coughing and sounded like he was getting over a cold. The website that Cosmo provided a link to above said that Steve looked drunk - not at all! He just appears relaxed and not polished totally like a keynote address.

I think we're all spoiled with his speaking abilities.

Apr 19, 06 - 11:06 pm Comment from: Joe the Farmer

The video is worth watching just to see Steve scratching himself twice in the middle of his presentation.

Apr 19, 06 - 11:14 pm Comment from: Jooop

Maybe he has crabs.

Apr 19, 06 - 11:15 pm Comment from: rlhamon

I think that it shows Jobs character as an individual.

All that we ever hear is how much of an Ass Hole that Steve Jobs is , however a CEO of a world wide company address the city council personally instead of some lower level management person has to make you think differently of him. I ask you when was the last time that you ever seen Gates or Balmer address Redmond WA. city council.

I feel that many feel that Jobs is an Ass Hole is because he doesn't let employees half ass a project...it must be perfect.

I have a growth

Apr 20, 06 - 12:46 am Comment from: Spark

Those Cupertino Council meetings ROCK! A packed house!!

I got the impression that Steve was missing his Keynote and 50 foot screen to visually support his presentation.

Apr 20, 06 - 12:54 am Comment from: Spark

How come when I go to my council meetings I'm begging that they let me modify my property just a teeny tiny bit, yet when Steve goes he simply states, "we bought up nine properties in Cupertino and are going to build a 50 acre project. Well... that's all. Just wanted to tell you what we're doing. Goodnight."

That's a rhetorical question by the way. I know why. It's must be nice being a Prince of Silicon Valley.

Apr 20, 06 - 01:03 am Comment from: Jooop

That council has the power to say "no" to his project. Merging 9 properties into 1 and building a 50-acre campus is a very big deal. That's why he addressed them personally, and that's why he made a big show of mentioning that they were looking elsewhere besides Cupertino. He's a master, I'll give him that. He didn't ask permission, he basically told them what he's going to do, and made them feel like he was doing them a favor. He did make one little comment about "and there's a bunch of approvals we'll need to get" at the end, after his main speech, when all the council members were licking his ass.

Apr 20, 06 - 02:50 am Comment from: The Other Steve

"every day it's a race to see who can get here earliest, because the last 20 people or so to arrive end up having to park a good distance away because the parking lot is full."

Limit the number of spaces to get your employees to come to work early? Wow, what an idea!

Er, don't talk to my boss!

Apr 20, 06 - 03:27 am Comment from: The Other Steve

Two questions -

1. With all those seats empty, where did the applause come from? Does the city council have an applause machine?

2. Why does the Cupertino City Council use Real Player? Does the Redmond City Council use QuickTime? I would bet they don't.
