Apple CEO Steve Jobs seen at Coldplay concert
Thursday, July 16, 2009 - 10:11 AM EST

"One of the crew on Coldplay’s long-running Viva La Vida tour keeps a running blog and has proved — over the space of 13 months and 90 posts — to be a pretty reliable reporter of life behind the stage and inside the tour bus," Phillip Elmer-Dewitt reports for Fortune.

Coldplay's Roadie #42's Blog #90:

Shoreline Amphitheatre, just outside of San Fran to be precise. I'll be honest with you folks, the only thing that mattered to me tonight was the presence of one Steve Jobs. I'm a confirmed Apple devotee and I really cannot imagine doing the job I do now (or even having got into this line of work) without my Macbook Pro (and all the Powerbooks that went before it). Creating these tools and putting them into the hands of folks like me was the vision of this man.

I spot Steve chatting with Dave Holmes outside the dressing room and suddenly feel like a star-struck teenager. In order to get the gall up to speak to the guy, I down a double espresso. The mixture of caffeine buzz and feeling like a cheesy little fanboy means that all I can manage to say to him is "Thank you so much". I realise that I'm quite simply making a tit of myself and so excuse myself as fast as I appeared.

With that, I suddenly have sympathy for every nervous and excitable kid that shakes hands with the band at a meet and greet. Time to hit send and fold up the laptop.

Elmer-Dewitt writes, "Not only has Apple’s (AAPL) CEO recovered sufficiently from his liver transplant to return to work a couple of days a week, he’s apparently feeling well enough to brave the crowds at a rock concert... Roadie #42’s encounter is the first reported public sighting of Jobs outside the Cupertino campus since his return from medical leave last month."

Steve was backstage. I doubt he had "brave the crowds". Still nice to hear this report.

Jul 16, 09 - 09:16 am Comment from: deepdish

Good for him. Life is meant to be enjoyed.

Jul 16, 09 - 09:16 am Comment from: HMCIV

Let's go MDN. I want to see the Photoshop of Jobs riding the Mash Pit of swaying iPhones right NOW!

Jul 16, 09 - 09:30 am Comment from: aCe

Uhm.... this is news?

Might as well bring back all the Woz on Dancing with the Stars crap. Leave the celebrity spotting news to whatever cheesy, self-inflated magazines you got rotting away the media world in the newsstands.

Jul 16, 09 - 09:46 am Comment from: Big Als MBP

'Proof of life' is always news.

Jul 16, 09 - 09:59 am Comment from: amyhre

Why shouldn't he enjoy a concert? It's been made pretty obvious he's a fan of music. Coldplay is a great band and the guy just had a liver transplant. Seems perfectly reasonable to me.

Jul 16, 09 - 10:09 am Comment from: critic

Uhm...yes this is news because there has been very little "official" word on his condition, and a liver transplant is actually a big deal from the medical perspective.

That he is feeling good enough to go out to a concert (and healthy enough to go into a large crowd and be exposed to germs while taking immunosupressant drugs required to prevent organ rejection) is good news.

Jul 16, 09 - 10:35 am Comment from: iPhoner

I find it amusing when people state, "Is this news" because you know damn well that they read every single work of the article anyway.

aCe could have just scanned the headlines and skipped right by it, but aCe took the time to click and read the entire article and then click and share.

Jul 16, 09 - 10:37 am Comment from: sMac

He was one of the original investors for that amphitheatre, I am sure he has at least one VIP box to chill in when he wants.
Hope he enjoyed the show as much as I did.

Jul 16, 09 - 11:16 am Comment from: Buster

@aCe...yes this is news. Think of Steve as a person you are very interested in...like a family member or a loved one or a parent. as most of us do here in one way shape or form. If one of your family went through hell and back with a near-fatal illness and was on the road to recovery AND given that you are out of town and rarely received any news, wouldn't you find this to be news, and very happy news at that?

I certainly do and makes me feel happy that he is on the road to recovery.

Jul 16, 09 - 11:48 am Comment from: Zune Tang®

Big deal. Steve Ballmer will be in Walker, MN tonight to see Foghat. Suck it, MAC dorks. Good tickets are still available.

Your potential. Our passion.™

Jul 16, 09 - 12:06 pm Comment from: HotinPlaya

I can relate to the guy, If I ever had a chance to meet Steve, I would not know what to say, except 'Thank You" and I am sure I would look and sound like a twit!

Jul 16, 09 - 12:35 pm Comment from: Ray

What?!?!?!?..he listens to music...that's it the stock prices have to drop.

just my $0.02

Jul 16, 09 - 12:40 pm Comment from: Crabs

And all respect for Steve Jobs just went out the window. Better than Mozart? Eff that. Go die Coldplay. And take your crappy Viva la Vida with you.

Jul 16, 09 - 12:45 pm Comment from: Seth Rogan

You know how I know you're gay? Because you listen to Coldplay.

Jul 16, 09 - 12:46 pm Comment from: Gavin

I disagree, I have the utmost respect for Steve Jobs. I think he's a visionary and I think i'd be mildly tongue tied if i bumped into him in person too. Apple saved me from a life of frustration with Windows and helped me discover my love and talent for photography, I'll always be grateful for that.
Steve is cool.

Jul 16, 09 - 12:46 pm Comment from: ElderNorm

Hey, Just went to the Pat Benatar concert in Orlando and got to be 6 back from the stage. I downloaded a bic lighter app for the iPhone for me and the "other" so we could "flick our bics" during the songs.

Took me back. And..... no burnt hands. grin

Jul 16, 09 - 12:54 pm Comment from: thankfully

Now that Jobs has apparently over come his "common bug", er, liver transplant we can all take a deep breath. It is comforting to know that the cancer that has afflicted Jobs only metastasized to his liver, at least, that's what Apple has stated. No doubt when Jobs does eventually die Apple will confirm his "extended sabbatical" or "celestial vacation".

Too bad no one present had the time to actually photograph Jobs with their iPhone. Still, any unsubtantiated rumor is enough for the Apple fanboi. Who needs confirmation when wishful thinkinh will suffice.

Jul 16, 09 - 01:00 pm Comment from: actually

... I heard that the person seen was a disease-free double to provide the illusion that Jobs has regained his strength following surgery and his massive consumption of immune-suppressing medications.

Jul 16, 09 - 01:08 pm Comment from: wait a minute

I saw Steve Jobs in the emergency department, does that count?

Jul 16, 09 - 01:55 pm Comment from: Buster

Foghat and Ballmer? No wonder good tickets are still available. They will still be available right up til curtain time.

Seeing Monkeyboy dance to that is an injury risk to anyone around him so they need to clear the front stage area of all people (and chairs of course....lol).

Foghat only had a few good tunes anyway.

"Steve Ballmer will be in Walker, MN tonight to see Foghat. Suck it, MAC dorks. Good tickets are still available."

And I hear the Foghat tickets are a whole lot cheaper. Cheaper is good!

News Flash: Steve Jobs put on his shoes this morning!

Jul 16, 09 - 05:27 pm Comment from: Not Bill

Long live Steve Jobs.

Think about how great this news is compared to what we could be hearing about him.

Jul 16, 09 - 07:03 pm Comment from: Not Foolin' Me

I hope Radiohead doesn't become the new Jesusfish-O-L-D-P-L-A-Y, or Arcade Fire!

gulp

Jul 16, 09 - 08:57 pm Comment from: The Great Apple Fanboi Massacre

Too bad when they gave Jobs a new liver they didn't give him better taste in music as well.

Watch as Coldplay now rockets to the top of the iTMS sales charts as sniveling Apple fanboys rush to download the latest Coldplay album so that they, too, can Be Like Steve™.

Jul 16, 09 - 10:40 pm Comment from: The Other Steve

@Gavin

Couldn't have said it better. I too am a Windows free photographer and I probably would also be tongue tied if I ran into Jobs. Just as I was when I met George Lucas.
I'm not that way when I meet most other famous people, but that one kind of got to me.

Jul 17, 09 - 04:04 am Comment from: ken1w

I guess Steve Jobs really has "rock star" status.
