Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak joins Modbook-maker Axiotron’s Board of Advisors
Thursday, December 18, 2008 - 05:18 PM EDT

Modbook manufacturer Axiotron today announced that Steve Wozniak, co-founder of Apple Computer and designer of the pioneering Apple I and Apple II personal computers, has joined Axiotron’s Board of Advisors.

A trailblazer at the dawn of the personal computing revolution, Mr. Wozniak is widely admired for the ingenuity of his designs for the home-built Apple I machine and its enormously popular successor, Apple II. As an engineer, inventor and entrepreneur, Mr. Wozniak gave shape and form to the notion of personal computing -- making the power of the computer accessible to millions and helping to launch an entire industry.

“We’re thrilled to bring Steve onto our Board of Advisors. His deep knowledge and experience are an invaluable resource for Axiotron,” said Andreas E. Haas, CEO of Axiotron, in the press release. “Steve’s forward-thinking and non-conformist approach, his incredibly creative engineering designs and his emphasis on the human aspects of technology have always been an inspiration to me.”

Mr. Wozniak, the son of a Lockheed engineer, started his career designing scientific calculators at Hewlett-Packard. While there, he was able to design and build the ingenious Apple I computer during his spare time. After first offering his invention to Hewlett-Packard, he co-founded Apple Computer (now Apple Inc.) with Steve Jobs in 1976 and designed the hardware and software for the Apple II. With its elegant internal architecture and high-resolution color graphics, the Apple II became a massive commercial success that established the template for the company’s subsequent smartly designed and user-friendly products.

In 1985, Mr. Wozniak was awarded the United States' National Medal of Technology (now the National Medal of Technology and Innovation), the highest honor for achievement in technology bestowed by President Ronald Reagan. He is also the recipient of the prestigious Heinz Award for Technology, the Economy and Employment, and a 2000 inductee into the National Inventors Hall of Fame.

Mr. Wozniak in recent years has devoted himself to various business and philanthropic ventures, as well as pursuing his passionate lifelong interest in education with a particular focus on educational technology.

"Axiotron is designing user-focused innovations such as the Modbook that improve and advance our digital lives," said Mr. Wozniak, in the press release. "I look forward to working with Andreas and his team to further this vision."

In his capacity on Axiotron’s Board of Advisors, Mr. Wozniak brings a network of personal and professional contacts and offers his insights into market trends and Axiotron’s product initiatives, such as the award-winning Modbook, Axiotron’s pen-based tablet Mac®solution, and Modservice, the new service enabling customers to transform their existing Apple MacBook computer into an Axiotron Modbook.

Here comes the real possibility of the "tablet".

Bye bye Axiotron

Really, you want such on your board?

sad, just really sad.

Remember Woz is on there board of Advisors not Directors. He has no power or say in anything and is just there so they can say we have an Apple cofounder working with us.

I recently had the opportunity to play with one of these. I suppose if you have a real application that makes sense to use the tablet form factor this might make sense. Except it's WAY heavier than standard tablet PC's on the market, and has no other input option built into it. Combine that with the reality that tablet input is a really crappy interface for general computer use - your hands are in the way of the display, handwriting recognition still isn't really viable, etc. For some vertical market apps maybe, but compare this to "real" tablet PC's and you would have to really, really, really hate Windows to the point of wanting to excessively penalizing yourself to not use it.

"We're off to see the Gizzard. The wonderful Gizzard of Woz".

Woz has a big one.

I hear a lot of crap about a certain genius, all of it from people who most likely can't even explain - having the schematics in their hands - how any of it works. This doesn't mean they are not smart, just that they are no where near as smart as Woz is ... was? So ... Ron? Would you kindly shut up? Unless your abs are more impressive than his Apple ][, that is. And, Double M? You are just sad, with your envy.
Yes. His shape resembles that of Santa Claus. So. What?

No, Jobs never was an engineer. He was marketing, not making.

As for those who denigrate Woz -> you don't deserve the apple you use to lambast him with your ignorance, stupidity and plain idiocy.

Smart is forever (well, until Alzheimer's anyway). While he may not do anything amazing with it nowadays (would you be doing much if you worth millions?), doesn't change the fact Woz is still a smart guy. Shame you idiots who criticize him aren't so intelligent or world changing.

The Axiotron tablet Mac is actually very clever, and it's useful for artists. At the previous MacWorld, they had a good-sized booth and they had real graphic artists demoing the tablets by doing the type of artwork they do at their real jobs. Therefore, they were able to fully demonstrate the usefulness of the tablet. The person I spoke to had just gotten hired at Pixar, and she was quite skilled at demoing this tablet Mac (which is essentially a MacBook with a Wacom screen/tablet replacing the regular screen and keyboard).

They use a standard MacBook, remove the top half of the base (the part with the keyboard) and the screen. Then they add their Wacom-based top half of the base to create the tablet. The stylus-sensitive screen now sits where the keyboard, touch pad, and palm rests used to be.

The rep told me that the repairs on the MacBook portion is covered by Apple, so they did coordinate with Apple to create this product without voiding the regular warranty on the base MacBook. But you do sent the unit to Axiotron, not Apple for warranty work. I guess they can keep making the current Modbook as long as Apple keeps making the plastic MacBook.

Yes, let's all let's all compare a one-hit wonder against someone who has hit multiple home-runs on multiple fronts.

Dec 19, 08 - 03:09 am Comment from: BillD

I always shake my head at people who put down Woz, by, for example, calling him a "one-hit wonder". His creation of the Apple II disk drive was inspired.

I doubt that anyone posting here has ever contributed -- or ever will contribute -- anything as important as has Woz. Yes, he enjoys life and marches to a different drummer -- sometimes on a Segway.

There are probably many things about which I wouldn't ask Woz' advice. But I respect him. And I hope he has fun at Axiotron -- he probably will. BTW, I own a ModBook and have been delighted with it.

Many years ago I met both Steve Jobs and Woz. I know which of those two I'd rather kick back with. grin

It's so easy to criticize Woz on here. Not like you actually would to his face. Woz is a nice guy and a genius. He is also a little eccentric. But then I am sure most geniuses are.

However you look at him. Without him we
would never have had the Apple I and Apple ][ and in turn the Mac.

Hey, lighten up! Kathy Griffin ain't no cheap date.

Dec 20, 08 - 05:01 pm Comment from: krquet

Isn't it interesting that I didn't mention who's the one hit wonder, and yet all of you criticising me, have automatically associated Woz with that comment. I know some of you can be a tad proud to admit it, but please, let this sink in for a bit lest you opine further. And yes, I set that up deliberately - thank you for playing. Fries anyone?

Finally, for those at home keeping scores, it was in reference to people constantly in need to put Jobs down in comparison to Woz. Not Woz vs me, you or Joe the plumber.

Dec 22, 08 - 10:32 pm Comment from: qka

Hey, lighten up! Kathy Griffin ain't no cheap date.

She's Woz's ex-girlfriend.
