“An Internet video brainchild of three twentysomething former University of California grad students has won big backers, including Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak and Red McCombs, co-founder of Clear Channel Communications,” Dane Hamilton reports for Reuters.
Hamilton reports, “The billionaire moguls are backing a tiny venture-backed company, Hotswap.com, which has ambitious plans to feed a growing demand for high-definition-like Internet video for everyday e-commerce uses, such as consumer car sales, its founders said.”
“Hotswap.com emerged from graduate computer science research into digital “compression” technology that its founders say can make common digital camera movie clips mimic high-definition television on Web sites,” Hamilton reports.
“‘I like what they’re doing. It’s definitely a step forward,’ said Wozniak, the Silicon Valley wunderkind who formed Apple with entrepreneur Steve Jobs in 1976. “‘Woz,’ as he’s known, said he signed on as an adviser to the company to ‘give them ideas that come into my mind,'” Hamilton reports.

“I give them ideas that come into my mind.” Well, Woz, those are usually better than the ones that come out of your behind. (We kid. We rhyme. We love Woz. TGIF!)
P.S. Our all new-server setup is coming soon. Stay tuned…)
The ideas out of Woz’s behind (fuelled no doubt by Camel Milk) are probably superior to ideas out of Ballmer’s mind!
The best news of all? MDN’s new server coming soon. Lord knows this site is the slowest on the ‘net. But I come anyway!
Thanks for the update MDN on your future speed increases.
What kind of server? What upgrades. Give us the “skinny”.
I hope the new server filters out all the ads. Also need one optimized for iPhones on the Edge, so to speak. You think this site is slow? Try waiting for a page on the Edge network! Yikes.

Gee, my Palm TX brings up this page in about 3 seconds using a 28.8 kbps telephone modem, no adds either
Just looks like crappy videos of people selling their car.
But, at least they were able to get seed money so they can pay themselves 200,000 salaries until they go bankrupt.
@get a Palm
For a site like MDN that no longer even shows pictures of the article subjects, I can’t argue. All their ad sourcing overhead really bogs down these pages. I hate that we now have to wait for an ad to appear before reaching linked articles. Criminy, that’s all this site does; link to other articles.
…Hell, I’ve got to wait on my Quad Core Mac Pro on a T1 line!
“The billionaire moguls are backing a tiny venture-backed company, Hotswap.com, which has ambitious plans to feed a growing demand for high-definition-like Internet video for everyday e-commerce uses, such as consumer car sales, its founders said.”
Already dead.
Unless they seriously think they have the resources to outflank YouTube, Google, and everyone else vying for king of the video hill.
Bonus points for spirit, but it’ll be a tough fight.
Hell! ive got to wait and i got a proto type mac book pro quad Xeon directly plugged into the 10 gig network the web server is on!!
man, just get rid of the ads, its like tolls. everyone hates em, no one uses em, they slow traffic down, and they are ugly.
Woz was. He’s gone, out of the picture, affects nothing anymore. A tinkerer. Make him a Knight and forget about him once and for all.
Move on.
“man, just get rid of the ads, its like tolls. everyone hates em, no one uses em, they slow traffic down, and they are ugly.”
You’ve obviously never run a (web) business.
Will you pony up a subscription fee?
Or is everything free in your fantasy world?
Yep! Camel’s Milk, the panacea for all ills!!!
Okay, about this new server….less adds, more news, more articles and the ability to SHOUT at Trolls please.
Thank you!
He needs to come back to Apple where he can do the best good instead of tinker about and piss his money and time away.
It’s “ads” you miserable illiterates! Short for advertisements. True, they usually add little.
you should love Woz (and be more respectful): without him, you wouldn’t be here doing this. In a phrase: raison d’être. Jobs might be the business acumen, but Woz was the engineering brain behind the pair. Apple could have come to exist without Jobs, but not without Woz.
Okay, that was the strangest (and least coherent) MDN take I can remember.
(We kid. We rhyme. We love MDN. TGIF!)
