Apple debuts new ‘Get a Mac’ ad: ‘Office Stress’ (with video)
Thursday, April 10, 2008 - 10:11 PM EDT

Apple today debuted a new "Get a Mac" ad on broadcast and cable TV networks across the U.S. and on the company's website.

In the new ad, "Office Stress," PC offers Mac a stress toy, but ends up squeezing it throughout the commercial because Macs just got the latest version of Microsoft Office, Mac can do all of the office stuff PC can do, Macs are so compatible with PCs, and people want to transfer all of their files to Mac.

The ads are available in a variety of sizes and qualities (up to HD) via Apple.com here.

Yes, give it a squeeze.

The bald head on the doll looks like Ballmer.

Apr 10, 08 - 10:53 pm Comment from: Jim - TIV

Ampar... were you supposed to post that on the dell laptop thread? ;-p

Apr 10, 08 - 11:03 pm Comment from: Myron P. Nerdlinger

Ooohhhhhh! Microsoft Office on a Mac? Really? Fantastic!

Apr 10, 08 - 11:08 pm Comment from: 84 Mac Guy

Actually, the poor suckers using Office 08 on the Mac will need a stress toy.

Apr 10, 08 - 11:30 pm Comment from: mark

My officemates on 2 year old PCs are suffering mightily on Office 2007. They are complaining of sluggishness; some say its 10x slower than Office 2003.

Back on topic, I just love how Apple is turning a MS positive (release of Office 2008) into a negative. Wicked.

Apr 10, 08 - 11:40 pm Comment from: R2

With all these ads you'd think Mac marketshare could at least reach double digits.

Apr 10, 08 - 11:42 pm Comment from: LateRegistrant

Been using Office v.X for a few years now. Almost ready to upgrade to Office 2004.

Apr 10, 08 - 11:44 pm Comment from: iMaki

Friggin Hilarious!!! One of the best ever!

Apr 10, 08 - 11:48 pm Comment from: Doc4i

You see that's why MAC users are sexier than PC users. Not only can you multi-touch but you can also give it as squeeze.

Apr 10, 08 - 11:51 pm Comment from: nightshrill

unfortunately however there is no arabic (or any right to left language support) for word 2008, and as someone who has to work extensively in arabic, french and english and exchange said files w/windows users pages is not an option. Therefore I've been running office 2007 on my imac via bootcamp w/vista sp1 and have little to no problems

Apr 10, 08 - 11:59 pm Comment from: TowerTone

I'm glad I'm not his squeeze.....

Already there since over 3 days!...

"Actually, the poor suckers using Office 08 on the Mac will need a stress toy."

Not really, but I'm not that impressed with it either. I thought it was supposed to be faster than Office 04 on Intel iMacs, but it actually seems slower on mine.

Apr 11, 08 - 02:22 am Comment from: c

Exorcised my Mac of all MS software, and it aint coming back.

Pages is simply better. Get iWork and forget about Microshit forever.

Apr 11, 08 - 02:29 am Comment from: AppleMacMan

Get with the times people, NeoOffice which is designed exclusively for the Mac user completely OWNS M$ Office 2004 and 2008. 

Apr 11, 08 - 03:11 am Comment from: Spark

The Mac Office 2008 is DOGGG slow. It takes about a minute and half to launch any of the apps. So called native now for Intel, it's slower than 2004. Plus, Excel has no macros. I hate having to use it. In my opinion no one should go beyond the 2004 version if you have to use Office at all. It's obvious that MS purposely hobbles its Mac products.

Apr 11, 08 - 03:18 am Comment from: makemineamac

Spark you're right. I cannot believe how long it takes to open any one of the 08 apps! It's crazy - it feels like 2 minutes or more.

I've gone back to 2004 as well.

And you might be onto something there with the conspiracy theory too, as I don't see how it's remotely possible for a supposedly now 'native' app to run slower than non-native. Fargin' bastages...

Apr 11, 08 - 03:35 am Comment from: hs

love the pop at the end

Apr 11, 08 - 04:13 am Comment from: Micro Me

@Spark & makemineamac. Yeah, startup time is a real pain, and the apps seem slower in operation also.

I still use Entourage 04 for attachment to our PC network Exchange server, and I'm now questioning the wisdom of my 08 upgrade for Word, Excel and PowerPoint. I've previously praised the efforts of the MS Mac Business Unit, but they sure seem to have dropped the ball on this one.

I endorse Spark's comments. If you need to use Office (and I do), consider sticking with 2004.

Apr 11, 08 - 04:25 am Comment from: phezzman

Unfortunately my working life means Vista with Office 2007 on a new PC.....it's like pulling teeth on a daily basis.
Seems as though M$ took 2 steps forward towards making it look like a new version, and 3 steps back in terms of speed.
Basic operations, let alone running macros is worse than my old P4.
Avoid.

Apr 11, 08 - 04:47 am Comment from: Hint Hammer

hs,

Which head? "PC's" or the stress toy?

wink

Apr 11, 08 - 06:31 am Comment from: Ampar

To Jim - TIV
". . . the dell laptop thread?"

That was no thread. Too dark. Too short. Too twisted.

Apr 11, 08 - 06:38 am Comment from: Ampar

In several of these comments, you could swap the words, Office for Mac 2008 for Windows Vista and Mac:Office 2004 for Windows XP. It's not just the MBU that's releasing spheroid objects from great heights.

Apr 11, 08 - 06:54 am Comment from: OpJ

Screw Office 2008.

Word 5.1 on a SE/30--that's the bomb. (And probably as fast as Office 2008 on an Intel Mac...)

Apr 11, 08 - 07:01 am Comment from: Hm...

There was a very loud thud when Office 2008 hit the floor.

Apr 11, 08 - 08:18 am Comment from: pocketRocket

I loved WordPerfect version 5, but they really dropped the ball on the early Windows versions.

Apr 11, 08 - 09:18 am Comment from: Dead muslim

"unfortunately however there is no arabic"

Most likely to help prevent those muslim from sending messages to those worthless countries. wink

Apr 11, 08 - 09:39 am Comment from: Predrag

I'm not exactly sure what is this performance talk about. I have a Core Duo iMac (one of the first Intel ones) with Leopard. Office 2004 took minutes to launch an application. Office 2008 is much faster. Initially, though, it took forever; after it initialised all the data and set up the stuff, it now launches considerably faster than 2004 and it is just a bit faster overall than 2004.

This is in no way a glowing endorsement, but I just wanted to mention it.

Apr 11, 08 - 09:52 am Comment from: THE.MAC.GOD

Yes, another esoteric commercial that fails to show what's wonderful about a Mac...

Just my $0.02

Apr 11, 08 - 11:48 am Comment from: JadisOne

Office 2008 is horrible. I am unimpressed with its supposed speed. Office 2004 definitely runs faster in Rosetta than a native Office 2008.

Apr 11, 08 - 09:16 pm Comment from: Skeeter

Microsoft Office 2008 is marginal at best! Entourage their claim to an Email/Calendar program that is "MS Exchange" Compatabible sucks at best - It crashes at least 4 - 6 times daily - when trying to add attachments to an email!!!! This is a know bug since it came out that Microsoft has YET to address. You definately need that duck when using it on a Mac. MS Office 2008 is by far the worst written software product yet for OS X - "It Just Works.... NOT!!!!!!"

Apr 12, 08 - 02:30 am Comment from: bon

MS Office. Gross.

How about a constructive comment you ethnocentric racist pig.
