Apple delays shipment of new unibody 17-inch MacBook Pro
Thursday, February 05, 2009 - 11:49 AM EDT

Apple Store"First Apple bumped the new unibody 17-inch MacBook Pros past the original self-imposed 'end of January' deadline. Then they were set to ship soon...ish. Now, just a few days into February, Ars readers are telling us that orders for even stock models are getting delayed further into the month," David Chartier reports for Ars Technica.

Apple has recently been emailing customers "with the message 'Wrapping up the new 17-inch MacBook Pro is taking a few days longer than we projected. As a result, we will be unable to ship your 17-inch MacBook Pro until February 19, 2009,'" Chartier reports.

"Apple's online store now also says '3-4 weeks,' which would cause orders placed today not to ship until March," Chartier reports.

What jerks the guys who run this site are. If this was any other company's product, say a Palm handset,or a RIM product that was delayed, they'd be all over it like stink on shit. But Apple delays, and it's all fine and dandy? Push notification services? Where is that MDN?

@@MDN take...

ok Pederso... I mean MacDu... uh... or was it !@#$!@$#?

We get it. MS pays you by the thread theft? Or the number of postings?

While I think @ MDN Take is a bit over the top, he (she?) has a point. Apple did say "January", then they skipped that by a forgivable few days, then by a less forgivable few weeks. While I agree with the assessment on the site - better to wait than to ship "crap" - perhaps it would be better if MDN could be a bit more charitable when it comes to Palm, or RIM, or M$ delays. I don't mean "don't report the delays", just "tone down the less-mature sniping in the Takes". Also, I don't mean "any delays" ... when you get into months, there is a problem worthy of significant note.

@all MDN Complainers

You are on an Apple-centric site, if you want a place that is sympathetic to Palm, RIM, or Micro$oft, I suggest you visit any of the following sites:

Im bummed. I just put my order in for a custom config last night and the delivery date is March 10. Oh well...

Feb 05, 09 - 03:05 pm Comment from: nsapap

For all the complainers on the delay -- big deal! MS can delay their OS by years and other companies announce vaporware with no product delivery in site, but Apple is expected to hit the mark within a couple of weeks? My 17PB is now 4.5 years old -- I can wait a few more weeks if I have to!

It's a supply chain problem. Once final specs are received at the factory in CHINA, the factory may have to reconfigure its large scale assembly to handle the changes. Remember, this is a new(ish) product. If there are any problems at the factory, delays will happen. Also, people have to realize that shipping these systems overseas can add delay, especially if people don't purchase the preconfigured versions. Last time I ordered an iPod, the UPS tracking showed it being sent to 2 CHINESE distribution centers before it arrived on the East Coast. If the factory is not cranking the units out, it is probably because of supply problems/assembly problems and not necessarily that there is a design problem.

Or last minute change/upgrade in specs? To be in line with latest and greatest???
