Apple does the impossible: millions of new iPhones already positioned in market, but no photos exist
Friday, May 30, 2008 - 08:39 AM EDT

"The launch of the next-generation iPhone promises to be Steve Jobs' greatest stunt yet," Brian Caulfield reports for Forbes.

"Apple, Jobs' secretive computer and gadget company, has been quietly positioning millions of units of a mysterious new product--almost certainly the new iPhone--in key markets since March. And yet, incredibly, not one credible image of Apple's new product has yet been published," Caulfield reports.

"It's almost certain Jobs will unveil the latest version of the iPhone June 9, putting the gadget up for sale shortly thereafter," Caulfield reports. "Ryan Peterson, co-founder at start-up ImportGenius.com, was the first to get the details of how Apple will make this happen. Peterson--an iPhone fan himself--sells shipping data culled from a clutch of government and private databases."

"On April 23, when Apple Chief Operating Officer Tim Cook told investors on Apple's quarterly earnings call the company would sell 10 million iPhones before the year was out, he knew that millions of the new phones were already on their way to retailers," Caulfield reports.

"It's clear now that Apple has many million units of that 'special something' already sitting in distribution centers around the country. We can hardly wait to find out what Jobs has in store," Caulfield reports.

I can't wait to 'lose' my 1st generation iPhone and get it replaced with a 2nd generation one wink

May 30, 08 - 08:54 am Comment from: M.X.N.T.4.1

It's the new iRobot, Apple are ready to roll it out and once it's in all homes they will simultaneously destroy all MS equipment - except for my trackball explorer which is actually very good.

May 30, 08 - 09:11 am Comment from: Crash

Lol, Have fun with them.

May 30, 08 - 09:12 am Comment from: Skabeetle

Will it be different enough to make me want to drop my 1st Gen iPhone and pay again? That's the question!

May 30, 08 - 09:12 am Comment from: JoshtheiMacGuy

I never bought a first generation iPhone. Hopefully, they have got the bugs out of the it, and then I can consider it when my current contract expires.

May 30, 08 - 09:12 am Comment from: Moo

M.X.N.T.4.1;

I already own an iRobot, and it sucks.

@Jamie,
"I can't wait to 'lose' my 1st generation iPhone and get it replaced with a 2nd generation one "

Better check you have new for old on your policy or you might end up getting the same model.

May 30, 08 - 09:14 am Comment from: cptnkirk

It's not just 'around the country' (presumably meaning the USA) it's in many countries around the world. This is bigger than D-Day!

May 30, 08 - 09:14 am Comment from: Akido

@Moo:

Isn't that what it's supposed to do?

May 30, 08 - 09:15 am Comment from: Moo

JoshtheiMacGuy?

"Hopefully, they have got the bugs out of the it"

Aside from needing a little proofreading, could you please elaborate on what "bugs" even existed in iPhone 1.0?

I own an iPhone, and everything that's included works as advertised.

May 30, 08 - 09:15 am Comment from: Steve516

I already have my current iPhone sold to a co-worker... Just waiting for the new model to arrive (since february actually...). I may buy two this time... grin

May 30, 08 - 09:16 am Comment from: jeddog

Josh, Aren't you glad your mother didn't say the same thing about you?

May 30, 08 - 09:27 am Comment from: JoshtheiMacguy

jeddog. You can bet my mother would not have "lost" my older brother just to have me.

Hey, I know how to push the buttons of the fan boys.

Next up - iPhone 3 to use Windows 7!!!

May 30, 08 - 09:36 am Comment from: TowerTone

The 9th isn't good for me.
How about the 16th?....

May 30, 08 - 09:40 am Comment from: Ampar

Most Macs at the Apple Store online (now and historically) offer from two to three model choices and iPods also range from low to high with regards to price, features and capacity. The rumors of two or more iPhone models seems plausible.

May 30, 08 - 09:42 am Comment from: Ampar

" . . . rumors . . . seem"

It's early.

May 30, 08 - 09:44 am Comment from: Jamie

@British Mac Head

Don't worry, already checked... I have total cover from Carphone Warehouse, and asked that exact question when I bought the insurance. They will replace my iPhone with the newest model.

Win-Win situation for me grin only a £20 excess charge for a 2nd Gen iPhone!

May 30, 08 - 09:49 am Comment from: Blue Dream

Keeping this worldwide event secret is as big an accomplishment as their OS and product line. Universities will teach this to the Window 7 droolers in marketing class.
Maybe there is a iPhone 2 producing factory on an island in the Pacific where noone speaks English and noone can afford a camera phone or internet.

June 3rd - sooner than later

May 30, 08 - 10:35 am Comment from: One guy from Finland

Sucking iRobot?

Who calculated that there was around 8 million iPhones in those containers?

May 30, 08 - 10:37 am Comment from: Herman

why is this site always so frackin' slow?!?

May 30, 08 - 10:37 am Comment from: vtguy

You are lucky to be able to use an iPhone. AT&T;is still not a service available in Vermont. Last week, I went out and got a new LG phone. <sigh> I truly wish I could share in the excitement.

May 30, 08 - 10:39 am Comment from: Macintosh

So, retailers around the world are sitting on boxes full of the next generation iPhone, but with the first generation software installed on them? And no pictures or leaks? Yeah right... Ridiculous.

May 30, 08 - 10:41 am Comment from: HMCIV

And they call the Bush Administration secretive.

May 30, 08 - 10:44 am Comment from: Register or Login

So Brian, where are these distribution centers that have millions of that "special something" gadget?

May 30, 08 - 10:48 am Comment from: Ampar

Secretive or secretory?

I agree with you on the Trackball Explorer. I just can't get by without mine. I wish they were still available. I've got a couple that I've been hoarding, so I'll still have one when mine gives up the ghost.

May 30, 08 - 11:50 am Comment from: ralph from berlin

what i don't understand: what about the iphone software 2.0? how can it be installed on millions of units which are already waiting in warehouses around the globe to be shipped, if it is not even ready yet? someone?

p.s. i am also betting on two iphone devices. on 3G with a 3,5" screen and a smaller 2.5G with a 2,8" screen. (remember: customers don't care about features, they care about the experience)

May 30, 08 - 12:04 pm Comment from: Macview

@ralph from berlin

It's called an Update that's released when the it's announced the same day the phone is.

May 30, 08 - 12:04 pm Comment from: The Other Steve

Not so fast Apple!!!

You can't come out with a new iPhone yet, Microsoft and others haven't finished copying the first one.

May 30, 08 - 12:23 pm Comment from: Metryq

@ Ampar: "Maybe they can't be photographed."

1) They're so small they can't be seen with the naked eye and must be surgically implanted (imPod and imPhone) just behind the ear, or

2) They're the same size as first gen units, but they have dynamic camouflage (i.e. they're invisible), or

3) They can't be photographed because they're guarded by a "crack suicide squad," or

4) They don't exist. (Gasp!)

May 30, 08 - 12:25 pm Comment from: Ampar

"The greatest trick the devil ever played, was convincing the world he doesn't exist"

"The line was written by the famous French poet Baudelaire in a short story about meeting the Devil. The story is called "Le Joueur généreux" and was published Feb. 7, 1864.
The actual line:
«Mes chers frères, n'oubliez jamais, quand vous entendrez vanter le progrès des lumières, que la plus belle des ruses du diable est de vous persuader qu'il n'existe pas!»
or In English:
"My dear brothers, never forget, when you hear the progress of enlightenment vaunted, that the devil's best trick is to persuade you that he doesn't exist!"

This quote is also used in the 1995 movie "The Usual Suspects" by Kevin Spacey's character Verbal Kent. He says "The greatest trick the Devil ever pulled was convincing the world he didn't exist" when explaining Keyser Soze to the cop."

I had to stop by the AT&T;store over the weekend, and mentioned the new iPhone -- and the dude knew nothing about it; hadn't even heard one was being released. So it's going to come as a surprise to your average AT&T;idiot too... raspberry

(I'm converting my 1.0 into my spouse's new phone, then getting the 2.0 for myself.)

May 30, 08 - 12:45 pm Comment from: currentinterest

We have three iPhones in our family. If it has video conferencing, then I will update all three, if not then only mine will be updated for now. With the 2.0 software, it will still be like getting a new phone.

May 30, 08 - 01:03 pm Comment from: BiZarRo BaLlmEr

Hard to believe of all those iPhones that are out in the field: no one has supplied secret photos of, say...a mysterious pallet wrapped in black shrink wrap? Maybe a photo of the "new" packaging or the new box of the new iPhone? Since April no fuzzy, awful camera photos?
Possible but hard to believe.
